Pla.n.ning commiaaioners last
week denied the request to put
an •animated sign• -similar to
the changeable freeway ligm
that announce traffic delays -in
front of Franklin Realty, 3250 E.
Coast Hig~way. But on Tuesday,
applicant Jeffrey Stern appealed
that dedsion, so the Oty Council
will take up the issue Dec. 8.
The sign would replace an
existing 52-square-foot sign with
a 64-square-foot informational
sign announcing local events in
illuminated type. The text would
change every few seconds.
The city doesn't normally
allow signs with changing copy
or designs and hu granted only
three exceptions to that rule.
•The Planning Commission
didn't feel the sign in question
would justify the approval of an
exception,• planning director
Patty Temple said of the Corona
del Mar proposal.
Residentl hadn't raised much
objection, though they voiced
some hesitation.
•we just didn't want one of
those Las Vegas-type signs,• said
Phil Sansone, chairman of the
Corona del Mar Residents Auo-
dation. •Our only concems were
whether it would establish a
precedent -but we phttty much
left it to the Planning Om>mls-
sion. •

CORONA DEL MAR -With
the completion of a 2-8 season, in
which many sophomores and
