A good deal made better ·by the comm.unl~.
By Mac Bernd and Martha Fluor
W hen history looks b4ck
at the city of Newport
Beach's decision to
annex Bonita Canyon from the
city of Irvine, we doubt it will be
rememt>ered AS controversial.
People will hardly recall the com-
munity'a anger with the short
time frame for maldng the deci-
sion.
What the anneuUon will be
remembered for 1a its long-Umn
poGtlve impact on the schools in
the Newport-Mesa Unified
School Dlltrict -all at our
schools.
To make that prediction is not
to minimize the vital role of those
who opposed the annexation
because their efforts helped
achieve a benefldal outoome for
the community and, more impor-
. ta.ntly, our
&Chooll.
In fact, the
community's
united voice of
concern over
the negative
impact.I tbis
annexation
might have
had 00 the
local ICbools 1D
the Corona del
Marzonewaa
the major force 1D IW8etell1Dg the
deal for both the dty and ICbool
district. •
Here is the simple truth for the
area's schools. Had this annexa-
tion not gone through. the New-
port-Mesa school district would
have nothing. With the annexa-
tion, we got not only a school site
that will be reserved AS a park
for 10 years, but $6.2 million in
development fees that can be
used to improve schools in the
area impacted by the housing
that will be built on the annexed
land.
We also received an addition-·
al S1 million from lbe Irvine
Co., which owns the land. to
augment a $5 million education-
al foundation they establilhed in
1990 to improve education in
the Newport-Mesa d1stricl Last,
and maybe most importantly, we
got students.
While many parents think
more students in the area's
schools is a negative, the reality
isinaeued
enrollment at
the high school
level will allow
UI to offer
more
advanced
classes that
many people
would like to
eee at Corona
d.elMarand
our other high
schoole.
New students bring additional st.a• funding -to the tune of a~ $3,600 per student, per
year. Because we are able to pro-
vide the basic education Of chil-
dren in the diltrict for about
$2,000 per school year, the
$1,600 per student per year sur-
plus can be used to buy comput-
ers, flX leaking roofs, put up new
d.assrooms and otherwise
improve educatlun throughout
the diltrict.
All ol that makes foe a pretty

• Costa Mesa advances to
Saturday's CIF Division II
Semifinals against La Habra.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
HUNrINGTON BEACH -Costa
Mesa High's senior Chad Cleaver
scored the first goal of the Mustangs'
quarterfinal contest against Marina
Wednesday evening at Golden West
College. Thank goodness for Mesa.
with 55 seconds remaining in the
game, Cleaver scored the 19th goal of
the game.
Cleaver, with bis back up against
the Vikings' two-meter defender,
spun around and zipped the ball into
the canvas to regain -and keep -the
lead at 10-9.
·we needed a goal. I got a great
pass from Kris (Montgomery) and put
it in,• Cleaver, who scored three goals
in the contest, said.
The goal gave the Mustangs a
moment of breathing room -some-
thing they didn't have the entire sec-
ond half. But after a oouple deep
inhalations, the Mustangs netted
another goal and took the 11-9 win.
which advances the 23-5 squod into
Saturday's semifinals where Mesa will
meet La Habra. fresh off an 11·9 over-
time upset of Servite.
·we 100% overlooked this team.·
Mesa's Coach Scott Thytor said. ·rve
been trying to preach to these guys
that in CIF, anything can happen. and
this was a dogfight the entire game.•
Thylor's corps racked up a 6...C lead
at the half thanks to two goals apiece
by Qeaver, Todd Hylton and junior
Hunter Thylor.
But Marina, a team Mesa had oon·
vindngly topped twice in the regular
season. opened the second half with a
bang when junior Justin Pas•nacht
struck with a goal before 15 seconds
had ticked off the dock.
Fassnacht, who would end with a
game-high five goals, rattled off
another in tbe period as bis teammate,
Jeff La.non, el9o sank two. At the end

Mesa began to take misguided

CONTI~UEQ FROM 81
before league play started.
CdM swept Newport Hubor
and split with Woodbridge in
league action to share tbe title,
but it entered the postseason No.
t based on total sets won in
head-to-head competition (19-17
over the Warriors).
"In those six matches,• Mang
said, "the top girls have to do
well and they all did incredible.
Nadia had a little downer
against Newport once (dropping
two of three sets Oct. 16), but
Caylan only gave up one set in
those matches and that was in a
llebreaker (against Dana Hills
freshman Amberly Tantee), and
Nina only gave up two sets.•
In total in those six so-called
tough matches, CdM's singles
pldyers combined for a 46-8
lf'C'Ord.
Further, senior Nina V~ugban
lost both of her sets against
Woodbridge freshman Susanna
Lmgman, then later avenged
those setbacks by defeating
l .mgman in the Sea View
Ledgue smgles title match. It
was the third individual league
c.harnpionsbip for the Notre
Dame-bound Vaughan.
Leslie, a sophomore sensation
who went 24·0 in league but
retired in the l~gue semifinals
reportedly hecause of
dehydration, gave up a total of
five gamea against Newport
fiarbor, a team ranked No. 4 in
ClF Division I and fifth in the
rnunty.
Nadia Vaughan, who reached
the league finals as a sophomore
Uus year, losing to her sister,
canied the Sea Kings in their
Oct. 9 victory against
Woodbridge, 11-7, when she
sw~pt 6-3, 6-1, 6-0. Vaughan's
6-3 win over Llngman in the
third round clinched the win.
CdM's next big match in
league came against the host
Sailors, who tied the Sea Kings,
q.9, but Leslie's 6-1, 6-2, 6-0
-;weep helped Corona del Mar
win on games, 64 -76.
Additionally, CdM's best
doubles team for most of the
<;Cason, Ruchika Budhraja and
C "ourtney Tenerelli, won two of
three sets in that match.
CdM lost to Woodbridge,
I 0-8, on Oct. 28, its only setback
of the season. The match lasted
two days because darkness
postponed it with the Sea Kings
lt>dding, 8-7.
On Nov 3, Corona del Mar
dmched the title, finishing 9-1 in
Jpague with a 12-6 victory over
Newport Harbor as the Sea
Kings' standout singles players
went 9-0 m the match.
"There weren't really any
c;urprises this year," Mang said.
·We had three champions
plnying singles for us, and
C 'ourtney and Ruchi.ka (both
1uniors) are going to be
awesome for us."
Jenny Meyer and Robyn
Coleman have played doubles
together most of the year unW
lately, when Mang moved
Coleman with Budhraja and
Meyer with Tenerelli, while
McKinzie George, Nicole
Charney, Christtna Martine% and
Kristen GrUfith have filled in at
No. J doubles.
Diala Hakim has played third
singles this year for CdM, while
Katie McPherson and Ashely
Jacoblcm alto saw vonity action.
