Steve VanHom sparks new worries among firefighters and police who fought 1987 metal plating plant fire . By Christopher Goffard, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -For the dozens of Newport Beach fire- fighters and cops with firsthand memories of the Hixson Metal finishing fire -the fickle winds, copper-tasting smoke and fluo- rescent toxic soup -Sgt. Steve VanHom's burial this week held ominous undertones. VanHom, who succumbed Sunday to leukemia at age 48, was one of the first policemen on the scene of the massive chemical fire that raged through the metal plating plant on Feb. 22, 1987 and prompted a four-day evacuation of lhe area. Many who watched VanHom's flag-draped cottin wheel by recalled firefighter Larry Parrish, who ctied in 1993 at age 47 . They recalled fire Capt. Al Schmehl, who is battling brain cancer. They thought of other friends who stood in the chemical runoff or breathed toxic smoke. And they wondered about themselves. "We were all kind of looking over our shoulders, wondering which one of us was going to be next,· said fire Capt. Drake Muat. "There's no way to predJct who's going to get it and who won't• Muat arrived at Hixson to find black smoke pouring from the Production Place building. Before he could even get on his breath- ing gear, the shifting wind pushed the smoke into his face. "It sure had a funny taste to it.· he said. "We were absolutely swim- ming in bright fluorescent blue- green fluid,· said firefighter Rich Thomas, who tried to enter the building before personnel feU back into a defensive mode. He said he did not have protection to keep his skin from absorbing the chemicals. "We ended up getting a full dose of I don•t know what," he said. The Jury found she deliberately plotted to kill 83-year-old Mary Roberts in early 1995, first trying to poison her with oleander tea and later trying to suffocate her with plastic wrap. During the trial, the defense offered evidence Kirby suffered paranoid delusions that invisible creatures called "tweakers" were hounding her, and the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa police departments were infested by witches and warlocks. Deputy Public Defender Jean Wilkinson contended Kirby lacked the mental capacity to form a premeditated intent to kill. Deputy District Attorney Bryan Kazarian maintained she was "quirky" but could still form such intent, and s he wanted to put Roberts •out of he r misery." "I don't know how weird she was,· said jwor Danan Hong, 23, of Costa Mesa, outside the court- room. "There was no medical evi- dence to prove any n1ental illness. We thought she was still well enough to get he r thoughts together to carry out the crime.• Kirby's mother, Wilda L. Dempsey, wept after the verdict while holding Kirby's 9-year-old boy. "I'm sick," Dempsey said. Dempsey, 57, said she did not blame the jury because the mag· nitude of her daughter's mental illness dJd not emerge at trial. Come to think of it, Marsh and the coach bore more than a passing resemblance to one another, except Manh was a little trimmer, I think. In Marsh's honor, I vowed to root for USC in the upc6ming weeks. Should you question that I did so enthusiastically, ask my wife (USC '57). martin I cheered USC into trampling Stanford 45-21. That was bard on me, because l always cheer for Stanford, except against UCLA. The next week, I pulled the Trojan fat out of the fire against perennial powerhouse Oregon State, which the boys from downtown mugged, 23·0. But it's all over now. My Bruins had signed a n ew head coach whose prior claim to fame was that he introduced the wishbone formation at Uni- veriity of.the Pacific some eight years earlier. (Mildly interesting factoid: Who quarterbacked Bob Tole· do's Tigers? Hue Jackson, now the offensive coordinator for USC.) The local ICboo1 ·, district was plumbJng the depths of public : confidence, reeling from an in·houle multi-l mlllion-dotlar embezzlement, ruled bf admin- : istrators who seemed distant and aloot . . t That was the backdrop that greeted Mac l Bernd, the Harley-riding superintendent fresh : from Uttle Rocle, Ark., who had a reputa~ t for being a fix-it artist. 1 Bernd played well in Ne'!,POJ1 Beach and I Costa Mesa. He was public. he was aocessible, he had a certain aw-shucks charisma and he knew how to play to a aowd. When he first hit town he made a po.int of visiting families on Costa Mesa's West Side, a community that felt cut adrift by the past administration. He rode the bus with a kinder-l gartner on the first day of school. He gathered : the teachers together and -with rock 'n' roll t blaring -got them pumped for the coming school year. Bemd's run as superintendent has been both inspired and bumpy. As he promised. in the early days, he reached out to the commu-nitY, asked for its help and explored the thorni- est of issues, from curriculum to financial over- sight. The self-esteem of the district grew week by week. month by month. But there have been snags, too. Later, on fourth-and-two, Her· zog bulldozed his way for another first down. •That block was big, because it gave them the confidence to score,• Mesa defen- s1ve end Richard Price said. ONE LAST SHOT • Pirates host Fullerton today in quest ol snapping a 17-game losing streak. By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilol COSTA MESA -Last week Orange Coast College freshman Andre Stewart l)e(:ame the first Pirate to rush for more than 100 yards. Last week ... well, that's about it. That has been the scenario for the Pirates' Coach Bill Workman all season. He has had to work as hard trying to figure out the posi - tives as he has in trying to get a win, But Workman is down to his last shot. With an 0-9 record, a program- worst 17-game losing streak and a 46-13 thrashing last week at El Camino, it is time for the Sues to salvage one last shred of a forge t- table season. Fullerton College will be the opponent for the 1 p.m. Miss.ion Conference Central Division showdown at Coast's LeBard Sta- dium. The Hornets have lost two games in a row and stand ot 5-4. Their quarterback, sophomore Geoff Berg, has fired for just 44 yards more than OCC's Chad Collins, and he's thrown t 1 inter- ceptions, second worst in the con- ference. The Hornets' offeme im't the big problem if you look at it from their own papers, but Workman's defense gave up almost 600 yards to El Camino last week, which seems to make any offense a problem. Then there is Fullerton's defense ... Interception artist Frankie Salaur tops the conference with seven picks in nine games. As a unit, it held Golden West to one touchdown and kept Mt. San Antonio College, the Southland's top team. to 17 points in the Hor· nets' season opener. "At times, they have been very, very good,· Workman said of today's opponent. Worlanan's offense, fresh off Stewart's century rushing day, as well as the return of receiver Ivan Mercer (who was sidelined with an ankle injury), is hungry and Workman and his squad ls starv· ing for a win. Aldrich has led Mira Costllo to six of its nine titles. •• ·They're a very classy. compel· itive team. l love playing them,~ Glenn said. Both teams share 11 19·2 record and each has notched its respec- tive league title, which is just the latest in 11 long line of league championships for both. The Mustangs, however, have grabbed the upper hand from Harbor th.is season. In the Santa Barbara Tournament in October, Mira Costa downed the Sailors 6· 15, 15-9, 15·13, 4·15, 15--6. "U they get down or lose 11 game, they don't panic. They are very well·coached and stay focused,· Glenn said of tonight's foe. "They don't really beat them· selves; you have to go out and beat them." Glenn, who has also coached the Tars to a pair of state champi- onships, compared the Mustangs to Laguna Beach, Harbor's victim in the semifinals, in that both are strong, experienced teams with traditions of winning. Harbor beat Laguna Beach, the 1996 section ch4lllps, 15·12, 15-10, 15-101\Jesday. Mira Costa takes advantage of solid ball control, composure and 6-foot senior Ashley Bowles, a second team All-CIF selection who is bound for UCLA. Aldrich's .squad also defeated Harbor in tournament play in Las Vegas in n best.af·three match that does not figure in woo·loss records, "They served us off the cowt, • Glenn said of Mira Costn's 15·9, 15·8 win. But their weapons are well· matched with Newport's artillery. Six.foot junior setter Jennifer Carey bas physically and em<r tionally paced the Sailors all sea· son and her experience and cowt prowess will be a necessity if Har· bor plans to top Mire Costa. "Jen Carey has been in a lot of good matches. I know she's going PUBLIC NOTICES • •, • ' to have 4 good m.atch. She has done a really good job in knowing her job and she trusts her team,· Glenn said. Newport's height will be a plus as sopbomOl"es April Ross and Krista Dill, as well as Carey and fellow junior Kathy La.void all measure in at 6·foot or taller. Each of these players, according to Glenn, has shown significant improvement all season and, when bot, are able to dominate 4 match. ·we're athletic and tall. but very yowig.
