Ten champion's tourism business
for this year's Rose Bowl, but Sat-
urday's football games clinched it.·

For the boys -about a dozen Newport
Heights Elementary and Ensign lnteune-
cliate School students -it's a three-year
labor of love built with parts scavenged
from dumpsters and scrap heaps. An~ it
grows by the week.
"We spend at least a couple hours a day
here,• said Elliot Laurance, 11, one of the
chief architects. Tireless builden, they
bring hammers and nails and use pulleys
to lift the planks. "We'll go up and start
making stories really detailed•

lights do for me.
To me, as I walk my dog every
evening along Back Bay Drive in
front of Bayview, they are but fairy
lights in comparison to the •bea-
cons• that light up the park near
the comer of Jamboree and Univer-
sity (Newport North). I have not
bothered to go see what exactly
they are playing there that needs so
much wattage, nor do I know why

firefighter I know how smoke injures your

It's 1997 and we sWl can't get it
right. H~re we sit in a oounty on the
brink of the next century and we are
arguing over the notion that an airport
in El Toro could serve the county's cit-
izens. NO WAY. Tustin got it right.
Unfortunately, they're going to smoke
and how are you going to police 18-year-
olds and tell them they can't smoke.
It's not a communist country, at least not
yet, and there's certainly enough informa-
tion out there if they want to smoke and kill
themselves -that's their problem. We can't
police that action. We've got enough to deal
with.

: half-day clinics for Newport Harbor Baseball Association youngsters 7

:-With "mystery guest" major leaguers and two-and-a-half days of
-workouts, contests and prizes, the clinics will be held at Costa Mesa's
Kaiser Elementary from Dec. 22 to 24 and Dec. 29 to 31.
Re~traliQn fees before Nov. 30 are $65, $75 before the first day
