We were also a Jot older, a lot more street wise, and a Jot Jess likely to submit to any sort of disdpHne after four years in the military than any of the other lt\ldents. Some of the former chill sergeants among us formed a camp association of sorta to deal with sod.al problems among the inmates. We didn't pay it a lot of attention, but ooe of the problems the association foc:used on was a massive pile of dirt between my trailer and the one nm door, Inhabited by-a tarmer~ football captain and bis wife. 1be dirt was admtttedly unsight}y, and there wu reason- able concern that unless it was removed. we would all be inun- dated with mud come the' spring rains. 1bere were no instituti.onal maintenance workers to call on for help. Among the camp residents, the location of the dirt was regard- ed. as an act of God, and it there- fore became the responsibility of my neighbor and me to remove it 1be association reminded us of this with increasing frequency as winter dosed in. Pinaili as others who had to walk past the dirt to get to the bathhouse began to add their insistent complaints, we real- ized we probably bad to act Sharing the work didn't occur to either of us. Our whole thrust was avoiding it altogether. So when it became clear that no one else WU willing to ease this bw- den and the oomplaints were turn- ing rancid, we bit upon a gin rum- my game to the death to decide the matter. We would go two out of three .games, and the loser had to get tbe dirt the bell out of there. It turned into quite an oorasioo We~ di the top al ~dirt to use as our card table, and about half the population of the camp turned out to watch on a Saturday morning. There were even cheer- OUlly in crumbling amc.rete.
