our dinner that night u.o.til the

that no one was expecting us over •
to their home for a big twkey din-

the local Kent6dcy Fried Chicken
with the other ski bums.
It wasn't quite the same as in
years past. No big gathering of
the clan. No fabulous home

with the other family members.
We were, simply put, home-

The Issue: A man has filed suit against local busi-~ • nesses for reportedly not providing proper acces-s and .. .. facilities for the disabled. ;
T he Daily Pilot article •Wheelchair
Priendly• (Nov. 8) revealed a sad
fact; there me people who will
always try to abuse the system.
Instead of being grateful for the many
advantages the disabled enjoy today
because of the Americans with Disabilities
Act, Komel Botosan has evidently found a
way to use the law 1or his own personal
profit.
After spending a day on our quaint
Balboa Island., he apparently had more in
mind than sightseeing. He managed to
find at lea.st eight businesses with varying
irregularities, including the poputaJ'
Wllma's, and gave the lilt to his busy
lawyer who filed a suit asking $1,000 per
day from the time of his visit to the ttme
the businesses come into compliance.
Add that cost to the need of hirlng a
lawyer, plus spend thousands more to cor-
rect the list of •irreqularities, • and you
have our community's favorite stores fac-
• • ing the prospect of closing their doors an~
potentially losing everything for which
they have spent a lifetime working.
Obviously, something needs to be done
to protect the new victims created by. the :
actions ol. people like Botosan. :

Smoking law for teens
not a good match
The Costa Mesa city police are not
giving out tickets for people driving
witbout insurance because they can't
get it taken care of. Where's the mon-
ey going to come from to ticket teens
for smoking?
And all the teens will do what I did
when I started smoking yea.rs ago -
they'll just be more creative and do it
somewhere else, which leads to other
problems. Bad law.

• Top-ranked Los Alamitos
proves itself worthy with its
13-6 victory over Costa Mesa.
By Molly Yanity, Daily A/or
BELMOITT SHORE -1)e tear.;
that stung in the eyes of a few of Cos·
ta Mesa High's water polo players
summed up the disoppointment of
losing in the C1F Southern Section
Division n championship game.
The Mustangs fell 13·6 to the top--
seeded Los Alamitos Griffins, a
squad that dearly owned the day.
•They were the better team today,
but it sure would be nicer to be on
the other side,· Mesa Coach Scott
Taylor said as the Griffin players
walked across the deck at the Bel·
mont Olympic Pool Wednesday
evening to receive their champi·
onship patches.
Costa Mesa (24-6) was in search of
its fifth section plaque, but Los
Alamitos quickly shut down that
quest.
The Griffins (25·5) won the sprint
and needed just a minute-and·a·balf
to strike. 1bey mounted a 3-0 lead by
the end of tbe fust period shutting
down each Mustang opportunity.
But those opportunities were
somewhat squandered by the Mus-
to.ngs themselves.
"We missed some critical shots in
criticaJ moments,· Taylor said.
Those moments included fruitless
attempts in three separate 6-on-5
chances.
"We were down 3-0, but they bad
three kick-outs. If we had scored on
just two of them, it would've been a
one--point game. We didn't SCOl'e on
any of them,• the second-year coach
said.
With the first quarter winding
down, Los Alamitos' n-evor
W.wrzynski drew. kick-out, but the ~Ust.mgs blew the chance as a bed

the semifinals in 1993 and the
quarterfinals in '92 and '95.
"They're a good football
team,• Brinkley said of Kennedy,
which comes in with a five-game
winning streak, as well as the
underdog label
·1 would say they're as good
as any team we've played this
year, with the exception of Santa
Margarita.•
The Sailors, however, are
clearly the best team Kennedy
has· faced this fall. Kennedy lost to
Savanna, 24-20, in its season
opener. a team Newport knocked
off, 35-12, four weeks later.
Newport is keyed by versaWe
senior Brett Baker, a tailback/cor-
nerback/return specialist on the
short list of the county's mostpro-
ductive players.
Baker has rushed for 1,585
yards and scored 26 touchdowns
this fall and his all-purpose
yardage (rushing, receiving and
returns) comes to an eye-popping
2,466. For good measure, he also
shares the county interception
lead with eight.
As if that weren't enough, Bak-
er will add punting and place-
kicking to his chores this week,
tilling in for talented Eddie John-
son, sidelined the rest of the sea-
son while concentrating on his
studies.
Johnson, the All-Sea View
League and All-Newport-Mesa
Di.strict punter last fall. had aver-
aged nearly 38 yards per punt this
season, including a long of 62
(three times).

FOX
CONTINUED FROM 81
Week sacked Matt Jackson for a
6-yard loss to force a punt on the
Spa.rt.ans' first series and made
three other first-half stops for
zero or negative yards.
·It was one of my better
efforts,• said Fox, whose
contribution often transcends
tackle &ts.
•A lot of my job comes down
to just being able to make a pile.
If I can't make the tackle, I try to
keep guys off the linebacker and
force the running back lo look
for another hole. If I can make
the running back stop to go
around a pile, usually we'll have
other guys there to jump on
him.·
Fox also contributes,
periodically on the offensive line,
parJicu.larly in goal-line
situations.
•He's played quite a bit on
offense, filling in when we had
injuries, and on the goal line,•
Brinkley said .... He's athletic

performer as a junior, Pox put on
40 pounds in the off·season,
adding to the circumference of
any pile in which he
participates.
MI don't think it bad to do so
much with my diet as just getting
in the weight room more,• said
Fox. who insists his appetite is
not as insatiable as one might
believe.
·1rs not like I eat five steaks

said. "I think I eat like a normal
person.•
Pox, however, did address the
Sailors' hunger for continued
postseason success after the Villa
Park game in the first round of
the playoffs.
"Every team is hungry at this
time of the year, because tt1s
either win, or die.•
His appetite for victory
sattated, Pox took care of another
kind of hunger before he left the
field Friday night When a family
member presented a bag of
c:booola.te chip cookies during
the postgame celebration. Pox
shoved his thick right arm deep
into the bag, pulling a cookie to
his chops, then quickly aushing
lt into crumbs.
Having feasted on prep
competition the last two seasons,
Pox figures to get some serious
looks from Division I college
recruiten. He's received mail
from schools tnduding Oregon,
Artzona, San JOle State, San
Diego State and Idaho State.
Apparently no word yet from
the Montan.a Grtzzlles.
