There are important issues here
at home, Congressman Cox
By Richard F. Taylor
I t's ironic that U.S. Rep. Christopher Cox (R-
Newport Beach) is so concerned about China's
buildup of nuclear missiles that he feels com-
pelled to jump on a plane to Tibet. Wouldn't you
think that someone so concerned about national
security would first take time to ensure that the
Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro continues to
operate as a commercial airport?
Independent of meeting our country's com-
mercial needs for passenger and air cargo ser-
vice, an international airport at El Toro would
allow the continued mobility of U.S. troops in
time of military crisis. And wouldn't that make for
1 better health, prosperity and security than, say,
another sports stadium to compete with the one
we already have in Anaheim?
Yet congressman Cox is more concerned with
the well-being of the Dali Lama than in protect-
ing and serving the will of hls own constituents
on the Newport Coast. We're the ones who sent
him to Washington in the first place. We're the
ones who have twice voted •yes~ to convert El
Toro into an international, commercial airport.
What about us?
1 EveryoJW I know who's taken the time to study
Orange County's air travel demands sees the
necessity for a regional airport at El Toro. But not
CoL He opposes an airport, yet has time to fly to
the far side of the world to tell the people of Tibet
that he cares about their future.
Could it be that our ambitious congressman
~ ~ete~ed that bis own security interest (as
Ill bis upcommg bid for the U.S. Senate) lies in
turning bis back on the people of the Newport
Coast?
We are, after all, beading into a major political
season. And the biggest issue tn this country -
bar none -is the future of El Toro.
And so, as our congressman shapes up his
travel plans to Tibet, I'd like to ask two timely
questions: Congressman Cox, aren't you pander-
ing to fat-cat campaign contributors in South
County who oppose El Toro and are looking for
anti-airport candidates? Do you really think no
new airport would bode well for your -and our
country's -collective future? We hope you're
smarter than that.
However you answer, we want you to know
this, congressman: Your time would be far better
spent in shoring up your home base in Orange
County. A good place to start would be to recog-
nize that the buildup has begun; our future quali-
ty of We will increasingly depend on quick and
efficient access to the global marketplace of the
21st century. .
Mostly, congressman, I ask you to think about
this: U El Toro's jet-capable runways get plowed
into 50,000 new cookie-cutter homes -and that
21-square-mile property turns into a whole new
downtown a la New York City -you had better
hope that when the inevitable crunch comes, the
Dali Lama will speak kindly on your behalf.
Because the rest of us civilians will be too busy
fighting through traffic-congested roads, and the
Defense Department will be too busy scrambling
to find sufficient airfields to get our own military
forces off the ground.
So while you're sending peace and freedom
messages to China, congressman, here's another
one for you: You don't need to fly to Tibet to pro-
mote human rights. The people of Orange Coun-
ty have a right-in your own words-•to enjoy
the autonomy and freedom (we) were promised."
U you really want to be seen as a freedom
fighter, you'd better start looking at the danger
right here in your own back yard.

TAKING THEl'R TO.LL :
The Issue: We asked readers if they are
happy with the San Joaquin Hills toll road,
which celebrated its year anniversary recently.
I think it's absolutely wonder.:.
ful. I sometimes drive it just to
listen to music and smoke a
cigar. In fact, I didn't realize it
was the anniversary but I drove
it to roll the 25,000-mile mark on
my Range Rover. I think it's a
wonderful road and wish you all
the best with it.
RICHARD BERG
Newport Beach
I believe that the toll road has
been pushed on us as a project
and once again our government
bas very poor business sense.
lbe toll agency is about 45%
below its projection and it's los-
ing money. They don't want to
admit it. They've got the top
members who are being paid
hundreds of dollars a day now
over there trying to get advertis·
ing for it and actually operating
the toll -which is a ridiculous
use of the top-level of the people
in their department.
I think that, once again. the
same people and same kind of
judgements that led us into the
bankruptcy are pushJng these
kind of projects and I'm veiy
unhappy with it.
FRED RAWI.INS
Costa Mesa
I think the toll road would cer-
tainly attract more people if the
fee was a dollar each way
instead of $2. I use it all the time
and I have a transponder. I have
a daughter who lives in San
Diego and my mother in El Toro
and if I'm really in a hurry and
it's not the middle of the day I
will take the ton road to El Toro
Road and go straight up El Toro
Road
The middle of the day, there's
too much traffic on ID Thro Road.
Anyway, I also think that if you
buy a ttamponder you ought to
get a couple of free rides out of
that. In most pl.aces, if you buy a
bus pass or anything of the sort,
you get extra rides because you
bought a pass, so to speak.
So when you're buying a
transponder you're only getting
as many rides as you would if
you paid for them.
It'• just eesiei: that way and it
is a lltqe faster, you save a bit of
time that way. But I think you
ought to get a better deal on
your transponder. And again the
fee should be dropped to a dollar
to make it more feasible for
everybody to be able to use the
toll road.
PA1TY VONHBNKLE
Newport Beach
I've always been again.st toll
roads. I've seen the graft and the
promises from government that
we would not have to pay them
after a few yean, just like the tax
increue on business a few years
ago and ooiporations.
'Ibey promised. they would
take that away. They didn't.

In their final game <>f the
fall, the Wlldcats secured third
place in the division with' a tie
that resulted from second-half
goals by Uz Lord and Aidan
Cleeland. Strong offensive
outings were turned in by
Courtney Conwell, Matalla
Sebag, Jana Luebke, Lauren
Palukl, Devon McCall and
Undlay Thayer, ·as well. The
defense was led by Lauren
Loe, Meredith Potter, KrtsUn

Long Beach Ughtnlng 1
• Rmh n s, South Coast Club o
The Rush Il battled to a tie
and then posted an inspira-
tional win that makes them a
consideration for a wildcard
berth to the. playoffs. Against
the Lightning, sweeper
Delaney Ferguson kicked off a '
scoring drive as she made a
steal and passed to Barbara
Julian, wha; in tum, moved the
ball downfield and passed to
babel Montoya for the goal 1
with less than three minutes
rexr111ining in the game. The
Lightning, however, 'tied the
score a minute later.
Against South Coast,
though, the Rush needed a
six-goal victory to advance
without a wildca.rd. They
came up one short in a
thrilling victory. IClmle
Kramer racked up the first
goal of the game, and Jllllane
Hartfiel would end the game
with three, as Hayley Miller
provided one, as well.
