tant Sheriff Doug Storm announc-
ing his withdrawal from the sher-
iff's race Wednesday, Costa Mesa
Police Chief Dave Snowden said
he will consider making a bid for
the post, edging away from his
earlier avowal not to run.
Snowden said he will consider
running if be is convinced that no
one else can do the job, if his fam-
ily supports the move and if be
wins the endorsement of Brad
Gates, his friend and the current
Orange County Sheriff.

HARBOR COURT -A defense
witness on Tuesday said Jason
Rausch was driving between 44
and 4-5 mph around Irvine Avenue
befOTe a fatal auto crash in May, a
dramatic cootrast to the 60-07 mph
figure the prosecution alleges.
Harry J. Krueper, an acddent
reconstruction specialist. testified
facton beside speed may have
contributed to the crash of the
OlevroJet B1a7.er th.at left 18-year-
old Demny Bridgman dead and
nine others seriously injured.
Under questioning from

Kmeper said the Bla7.er was prone

prooged mission: to help monitor
students' progress; to send reports
home to parents1 and to oollabo-
rate with teacben on developing
work plans to help each student

COSTA MESA -A 32-year-old Costa Mesa
man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly
walked into the girls bathroom at St. John the Bap-
tist school and asked a 14-year-old girl if he could
taste the lip gloss she was wearing, said U. Ron
Smith of the Costa Mesa Police Department
Smith said the girl told police the suspect,
Luciano Louie Contreras, entered the restroom
around 7:20 a.m. and said •0ops, this is the wrong
restroom.•

After she answered no, the man asked her if
she was wearing lip gloss. When the girl answered
yes, be asked if he could taste it, Smith said.
The suspect left the bathroom after a couple
more girls entered, Smith added.
About an hour after the incident, police spotted
Contreras -who matched the girl's description -

arrested Contreras on suspicion of child annoy-
ance after the girl identified him as the suspect ..
Smith said Contreras told police he had been
up all night looking for a place to wash up after
being released in court Monday on a shoplifting
charge.
Contreras said he entered the girl's bathroom
by mistake and just continued to brush his hair.
Contreras, who Smith said. has n~ record of prior
child annoyance charges, is being held at the Cos-
ta Mesa Police Department in lieu of $500 bail.

repeaters Brett Baker, Derek Fox
and Eddie Johnson of Newport
Harbor, are among the first-team
selections on the Daily Pilot All-
Sea View League football team.
The aforementioned Newport
seniors were joined on the first
team by Harbor's Pete Hogan,
and Phil Baltazar, as well as Coro-
na del Mar standouts Ryan Coop-
er, Mark Hatfield and Nick Hood.
Santa Margarita, unbeaten
and winner of 23 straight and
defending its title heading into
this week's CIF Southern Section
Division V semifinals, produced

Baker, a versatile 5-foot-11,

LAS VEGAS -The Costa Mesa Colts capitalized on a 6-yard touch-
down reception from Kasey Peters with 15 seconds left in the game to
notch a 14-13 win over the Las Vegas Scorpit>ns.
-The locals, who are 10 and 11-years old, got on the board with a 13-
yard run by Peters that capped a 50-yard drtve.
Las Vegas went ahead 13-7 by the end of the half, however.
But the Colts put it together when it counted. With two minutes to
play, Costa Mesa started at their own (5. Quarterback 1bn Iller hit
Peters and Brian Campos with crucial passes to set up Peters' TD to put
the Colts.down by one. Campos put the PAT, which is worth two points,
through the uprights to clinch the victory.
