The 33-year-old Costa Mesa resi- dent typically rises at 5 a.m. to arrive at the Boeing aircraft plant in Long Beach, where he works as a .technician. The most common question he gets: "Why?" "I tell them I'm only in my 30s and by the time the lottery dies out I'll be in my 50s, and if you don't manage it right you might have to go back to work,• Pinto said. In meting out the maxi- mum sen- tence, Judge Stuart T. Waldrip said the 57- yea,r-old Harrington, convicted in October, violated a position of trust when he showed X-rated movies to two underag~ football players in his school office and molested one of them in August 1996. What , ever happened to the policy of promot- ing from within? Effective managers develop and train subordinates in order to facilitate transition in the event a replace- ment is required. Cer- tainly Bernd must have a number of names in mind to pre- sent to the school board. Not all candidates may be willing to take on the added responsi- bility, however, there Mac Bemd should be some quali- fied young Turks within the district who would be more than willing to take-on the job. As to qualifications, certainly there must be a number that meet the requirements. U not, shame on the New- port-Mesa school board for hiring and retaining incompetents. Even the mili- tary, which may be only a heartbeat away from needing a replacement, always knows who is next in line for command. I can't imagine a more detrimental effect on morale within the Newport- Mesa school district than to be told that the school board feels that there are not qualified potential candidates that can be promoted from within because the school board cannot afford to leave any of these individuals' posts vacant. JACK TAYLOR Newport Beach Having trustees in for coffee This past week I had the opportunity and privilege of playing host to three of our Newport-Mesa Unified School Dis- trict trustees in my home for an informal coffee. I have found that, regardless of the community or school boundary in which parents reside, we all have generally similar concerns regarding our children's education. These board members presented the "Big Picture" of our district, then went on to share their current thinking on a variety of subjects that are sped.fie to schools in our zone. Those attending had an opportunity to raise questions and pursue topics in an open exchange. The formal setting of board meetings can be intimidating for some individuals. This coffee met the needs of a number of people. I would highly recommend that anyone interested in holding or par- ticipating in an informal gathering with our board members contact them to arrange a date. However, I would use it more frequently if there were more equitable fee charges. For example, I drive the section between Newport Coast and El Toro Road or Laguna Canyon Road for which there is a $2 charge. And this is the same charge for use all the way through to San Jwm Capistrano. Why not &et up a pro-rated fee-based mileage use -the system that is used successfully by the New Jersey Turnpike and Westchester, New York and Con- necticut toll roads. There's a significant grass-roots resjdent movement gaining momentum every day. The movement is a reaction to numerous plans -pro- posed and under way -designed by dty staff to enhance commercializa- tion at the expense of the residents' quality of life. Examples are many. Perhaps the most expensive and hig~y controver- sial to date is Project 2000, which will attempt to commercialize the Balboa Peninsula at the expense and over the strenuous objections of many resi- dents. Hundreds of thousands of dol- lars are being spent by consultants who will duplicate studies done numerous times in the past. 1bree cheers to the advocacy group needed to provide resident input to the city and staff. Daily Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -Little things often mean the difference and Corona del Mar High's boys basketball team learned that free throws can be the apple of dis- cord 4s missed charity shots doomed an impressive comeback run that sent visiting Capistrano Valley, rather than the Sea Kings, to the fifth-place game of the Dai- ly Pilot Tip-off Classic Friday evening. Down by 15 points at halftime, Coach Paul Orris' squad upped its defensive intensity and made a game of the contest before falling, 46-41. "We stepped up our defensive game. In the first half, we weren't playing 100% and were just giv- ing them easy buckets,• senior Tim Thurman said of the come- back attempt. The defensive effort that the Sea Kings (1-2) displayed in the opening minutes of the second half stifled the Cougars, who scored just four points in the third quarter. CdM senior Ryan Franke grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the putback. The completed three-point play put the hosts within seven at the conclusion of the third period. Franke, who led the Sea Kings with 15 points, went down hard early in the last quarter, though, as he and two other players got tangled up going after a loose ball. He was apparently kicked in the shin and suffered a bruise that sat him out the rest of the game. But the Sea Kings' big guys - Thurman, 6-foot-9 Alex Jekeli and junior Dennis Alshuler decid- ed to fill the void.
