There will be no dancing at The
Cannery.
City Council members put
their foot down Monday on esca-
lating problems in Cannery W-
lage by denying a request by The
Cannery owner Bill Hamilton to
allow dancing and amplified
music at his landmark restaurant.
But Hamilton, an icon of commu-
nity service and longtime restau-
rateur, found himself at the
wrong place at the wrong time -
and nearby residents used his
request to speak out against bar
patrons' after-hours carousing
through their streets.
•Bill Hamilton is someone
whom we all admire,· said City
Councilman John Hedges. whose ~
district includes the village. "But
the council has already shown a
sense of its attitude toward alco-
hol-serving in the Cannery Vil-
lage.·

Almost home, I got stopped on a lit-
' tie side street. A female police officer,

umt and I proceeded to give her as
bad a time as I could without brea.king

She was very frustrated and clearly

Across the border in Costa
Mesa, City Manager Allan Roed-
er said his dty al.so was still climb-
ing out from under the weekend
deluge and trying to add up the
oost$.
Roeder said supervisors in the
dty's Public Works, Communica-
tions, Police and Pire departments
spent most of Monday assessing
the amount of overtime, materials
and other costs the city incurred
during the two-day storm.
Costa Mesa officials estimated
they handed out 21,000 sandbags
on Saturday alone to residents
trying to stem the tide of water at
their homes.
All three city fire stations,
which doubled as sandbag d.istri-
ution centers during the storm,
ran out but were expected to get a
new shipment today, officials said.
While most of the usual street-
flooding trouble spots were sub-
merged again over the weekend
-19th Street at Anaheim got the
worst of it -some new ones float-
ed to the surface, too, Roeder said.

Costa Mesa Farm site were flood-
ed when rain runoff spilled out of
a MQi;m drain and a drainage
