NEWPORT BEACH -For more than
four months, 18-year-old Jason Rausch lived
under the specter of hard time. AB the driver
of a sport utility vehicle that flipped on
Irvine Avenue in May, killing one teen and

state prison if convicted on felony vehicular
manslaughter.

Everett Dickey reducing the charge to a mis-
demeanor, the specter abruptly evaporated
for the Orange Coast College freshman foot-
ball player.
Reaction from the case's key players was
emotional but not entirely surprising.

Teach the basics first
in our public schools
THE ISSUE: We asked our readen if
they thought high school students
should be learning more about the
wortcing world and placed on a career
track while in school.
First of all, our reading and
math levels should be really
above average. And I'm not sure
students ar•goi.ng to learn about
a work ethic or as they quote,
•heart and soul.• because that
comes from the home.
If they don't have it by the time
they're in high school. a class cer-
tainly will not help them achieve
that.
ANNE MARJE SCANLON
Costa Mesa
Students are constantly asking
"When will I use what I'm learn-
ing today?• •What am I going to
do after high school?" "What are
my real interests?• •What jobs
are available?• •ttow much edu-
cation will I need?• "What classes
should I take now to better pre-
pare me?• •1s there a way I can
explore careen while in high
school?• •ttow can these classes
affect college?•
You cannot tell me that teach-
ing business in school is any less
important than teaching basics
like reading, writing and arith-
meti.c. This is not an either/or sit-
uation but an in addition to situa-
tion.
Students should be taking the
basics in addition to real-life
classes. This is not a watering
down of the curriculum. It is
essential for these kids to know
what is available to them and
bow they can be better prepared
for the workplace in the next cen-
tury.

Does Martha Fluor under-
stands that the U.S. bas one of the
lowest-ranking educational pro-
grams in the free world? Does she
understand that California is one
of the lowest-ranking states? That
makes California., educationally,
the bottom of the barrel.
Having just spent the summer
getting to know family in Scot-
land. Ireland, England and Ger-
many, I am emborrassed at the
shallow attitude California h9
taken toward our children's edu-
cation. California's grasp on the
English language, history and
math completely paled next to
that of our European counterpart.
The classroom bas not ever
been a. place that is meant to slot
children into the business work-
force.
I have a videotape which Fluor
is welcome to view and she can
contact me or anybody else who
is interested in participating in
Pa.rents Involved in Education.
They can contact me at 515-4229.

I'll take oranges over Styrofoam any day
Following our torrential rain of last Fri-
day and Saturday, I looked out at the bay
to the normal sea of debris: scrap lumber,
tree limbs (and a f9w SIMll trees), truck-
loads of shrubs and cuttinls. • tMphone
pole, Styrofoam cups (1Do meny), etc.
Following a hellvy rain. alf tNs debris tra-
ditionally comes from ini.nct down the
storm drains, San Diego Creek and Into the
Bade Bay.
I miss tumbfe weeds and oranges.
My grandJ)9rents built their summer
home on the peninsula in 1914 and, as far
back as I can remember, tons of debris in
the bay after a rain has been normal.
However, the debris mix has changed.
My memory of the 1930s and 19405 was a
bay full of oranges anct tumbleweeds. The
uplands were not devefoped in those days
and the Inland was planted with thousands
of orange trees.
The rain knocked the oranges off the
trees and they ended up in the bay like
orange colored •balls" as far as the eye
could see. This year, I couldn°t see an
orange.
Also In the past. if the land was not
planted, tumbfeweeds l-feet or so In diam-•
eter also floated in the debris. And. there : • were no Styrofoam cupst :
There are times when I like to go badt to ·
seeing the bay full of oranges and I could
certainly do without the Styrofoam cups.
Just a little reminiscing of the days
before Orange County's burgeoning
growth.

While Khoury bad a few choice words

This past high school season was a great
one for our local schools. 1\vo CIF

exciting. The next step for these players as
they progress into their college careers is
equally exciting.
Princeton, led by Cd.M's Melissa Ford and
CdM resident Erika Harisen, won the Ivy

Another former Sea King, Kathryn Rice,

due to chronic shoulder tendinitis.
Newport Harbor product Tina Bowman,

straight California community college

middle blocker, who every college coach said
was too short to play in the middle at the
collegiate level.

The gremlins are back: WWII mural returns to college after 35-year hiatus ·
T be gmmlins have returned to
Orange Coast College after being
stored away for 35 yean. But these
mischievous monsters aren't in the foon
of 1970s hatchbacks or the star in the
famed Steven Spielberg movie -they're
two 9-foot-by-16-foot canvu murals.
According to Jim Carnett, director of
public relations for OCC, the unique
murals were created by Sgt John E.
Otterson. who had worked in Hollywood
u a set designer and wu oommissioned
by the Army to paint the murals to hon-
or the birthday of base commander Col.
W.A Robertson.
shop -while grinning gremlins creep
in and out of comers and over shoul·
ders, bags and ladders.
The idea to use gremlins came from
the old World War ll myth that if some -
thing was broken it was because the
•gremlins" got into it.
They were actually sent to an air
force base in Alabama after OCC sold
the gymnasium and moved it to South-
ern California College down \he street.
Eventually, the Costa Mesa Historical
Sodety was able to get the murals back
and bad them stored in a vault for l 7
years.
.;J
. The murals, "Activities of the Grem-
lhls, • were aea.t.ed in 1943 when OCC
wos then the Santa Ana Army Air Base
and are currently on dlsplay as part of the
colleges 50th Anniversary 1etrospective.
p•
-.
Painted in a brown and khaki color
scheme, the folk art depictl life on the
base in the 1940's -from men getting
their gear to visiting the base barber
After they were hung in the Anny Air
Corps service club, which was converted
to a gymnasium when OCC moved in,
the murals disappeared and were thought
to be shipped as far away as Florida.
The murals will remain on display in
the OCC Art Gallery until Feb. 20.
