with Kansas City Clliefs asQstant Paul Hackett.

NEWPORT BEACH -The deal
to replace USC football coach
John Robinson with .Kansas City
Chiefs assistant coach Paill Hack-
ett stunned lh>jan fans every-
where -and was sealed via
Leigh Steinberg's Newport Cen-
ter phone line.
Steinberg, a Newport Beach
sports attorney, negotiated Hack-
ett's contract, plopping him in the
middle of a coaching switch that
has played out more melodramat-
ic ally than • Jerry Maguire .•
USC officials on Wednesday
ousted Robinson, who produced
four Rose Bowl wins in 12 seasons
but whose team faltered the last
two years. Some sports figures
and USC fans decried the move
as an ungracious way to treat a
college football icon.
•rve always loved John Robin-
son -I've
been close to
him for years
and years and

berg said. •But
'SC had made
up their mind
that they were

fray with a phone call Sunday
night from his old friend Hackett
Steinberg agreed to represent
Hackett and started the serious
bargaining by Monday.
Steinberg cut Hackett's final
deal in a hectic phone maneuver
from his Newport Center office.
You know the scene: Think • Jer-
ry Maguire,• the movie whose
title character was modeled loose-
ly on Steinberg. Steinberg would
get an offer from USC officials,
then he'd call a weight room
phone in Kansas City, where
Hackett was shuffling between
faxed contract offers and game
plans.
The contract became final
Wednesday, when it hit regional
newspapers with a thud Hackett
took some criticism for not speak-
ing to the media then. but Stetn-
berg said he stayed quiet because
the announcement wasn't sched-
uled to happen until Thursday.
Steinberg said Hackett ago-
nized over taking the job because
of his own respect for Robinson.
But Hackett accepted the offer
when he knew there was nothing
he could do to stop USC athletic
officials from firing the respected
coach. Steinberg said.
AJi soon as the controversy
cools, Steinberg said, Hackett will
prove he's worthy of the high
standards of the USC football tra-
dition.
•Everywhere (Hackett) has
gone he bas brought an incredi-
ble offensive mind,• Steinberg
said. ·1 think he's a magnificent
choice.•

NEWPORT-MESA -It will
be a very merry Christmas for the
Newport Mesa school district.
Two days before the holiday,
the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in
Santa Ana will decide when and
how $27 miJlion will be divided
by various agencie!t'that lost mon-
ey in the 1994 COUDty bankruptcy.
Newport-Mesa stands to get
slightly more than $2 million from
the agreement, which will likely
go to much-needed maintenance
of school district facilities
"U everything goes right, we'll
probably see that money by the
end of the month,• said Mike
Fine, superintendent of business
services for the district.
The $27 million is from a June
1997 settlement between the
Orange County District Attor-
ney's office and Merrill Lynch &
Co.
Because school districts are
required to invest their money in
the county pool, county officials
said the $27 million will be dis-
tributed to schools.
•All the school districts in the
county will get some of the mon-
ey,· said County Counsel Lon

Car of suspects in foiled robbery
found abandoned, police say
COSTA ?vf.ESA -Police found
an abandoned rental car they
believe was the intended means
of escape for two men arrested
Wednesday on suspicion of trying
to rob a Bank of America branch
on 17th Street. ·
Sgt. Loren Wyrick said the car
turned up late Wednesday night,
hours after police arrested Brian
Martineall. 22, and Christopher
Michael Russo, 24, in the botched
heist.
The car, which police could
only confirm at press time was
rented, was found after other cars
in the lot cleared out, leaving only
one parked in the lot.
Police investigating the f'Jiled
benk robt>ery saw the car, ran the
license plate tags, found it was
rented and are now looking into
the possibWty that it was used by
the would-be bank robbers,
police said.
Inside the vehicle, police found
a gun holster which was empty
but fit one of the weapons used by
the men and recovered earlier 1n
the day and a styrofoam head
presumably used to transport one
of the wigs the men were wearing
as disguises, Wyrick said.
Officials foiled the apparent
bank robbery shortly before 11
a.m. when they were called to
investigate calls of two suspi<;ious
men -dressed conspicuously 1n
fake-looking beards, gloves and
sunglasses -apparently casing
the outside of the bank.
Police arrived and the two sus-
pects fted in different directions.
Russo was nabbed minutes
after police arrived and Mar-
tineall was taken into custody lat-
er after police trailed him to a
room at the Park Place apart-
ments.
The room belonged to the
apartment's assist.ant manager.
Officials were still investigat-
ing the car Thursday to try and
find more details, officials said.

a gun bolster which was empty
but fit one of the weapons used by
the men and recovered earlier in
the day and a styrofoam head
presumably used to transport one
of the wigs the men were wearing
as disguises, Wyrick said.
Offid.als foiled the apparent
bank robbery shortly before 11
a.m. when they were called to
investigate calls of two suspic;ious
men -dressed conspicuously in
fake-looking beards, gloves and
sunglasses -apparently casing
the outside of the bank.
Police arrived and the two sus-
pects iled in different directions.
Russo was nabbed minutes
after police arrived and Mar-
tineall was taken into custody lat-
er after police trailed him to a
room at the Park Place apart-
ments.
The room belonged to the
apartment's a.ssistal{t manager.
Officials were still investigat-
ing the car Thursday to try and
find more details, officials said.

JA~
A new breed of J11u1r
e can help you evaltuite 4x4s.
Of course, a foot of snow, sleet,
and haiJ can also be quite helpful.
When it comes to choosing a 4x4, you'll want all the help you can get.
Because there are over 40. And they're not all equally capable in snow.
In fact, there are a number of things unique to SWs that probably never
crossed your mind.
Which is why we've created a program that gets you up to 4x4 speed. With
• an "I know nothing" guide to 4x4 technology. A glossary of 4x4 terms. Charts
that compare virtually every SW. And employees who can answer engineer-
ing questions in a language you'll understand. Plain English.
So if you're looking for an SW, come in and see us first. You can even get
our free 128-page guide to SW s.
Why not take advantage of Land Rover's SO-year obsession with everything
4x4? Because without our help, you could wind up in o\)er your head.
