• Newport-Mesa's superintendent for the last four
years leaves his post for job in Arlington. Texas.
By Husein Mashni, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-MESA -School board members attended a
small going away party for Superintendent Mac Bernd at the
District Education Center on Friday morning. Bernd and his
wife, Shelley, left Newport-Mesa for Arlington, Texas, perma-
nently Friday.
The Bemds, who are driving to Texas, had been staying in a
hotel for their last few days in Costa Mesa. They planned to stop
and spend the night in Phoenix or 1\icson on their way down.
They should be in Arlington by Sunday.

• But the district may have to limit the

By Husein Mashni, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-MESA -There has been a hardy
response to the school district's retirement incen-
tive program. so much so that the district may
have to consider a cap on the number of partici-
pants.
The program bas the potential to save the dis-
tnct $250,000 in the last three months of the
school year if 60 people take the district up on its
offer.
The retirement pack-
age includes a one-time
incentive of $30,000,
paid to retirees at a rate
of $500 a month for five
years. Their pension
checks also will be
based on the size of
their most recent salary.
Previously the pensions
were determined by an
average of the teacher's
salaries over their last
three years.
·1 anticipate we will
have between 80 and
120 people who will
take advantage of the
offer,• said Linda Mook.
president of the New-
port-Mesa Federation of Teachers.
There have been two informational meetings
about the incentive package. About 200 potential
retirees have attended. Mook said.
•A lot of people are asking questions in a seri-
ous way,• she said.
If more than 150 teachers tender their resigna-
tions, the school board will have to decide -
probably in February -how many people it can
afford to extend the offer to.
And the board will have to consider the impact
it would have in the classrooms. ·u 150 teach.en do take advantage of this
offer, I have serious concems about the district's
ability to replace that many teache.rs, • Mook. said.
There are usually around 20 to 25 retirements
a year in the di8trk:t. With the added retirees, the
distrk."t abo wUl have a jump on the market for

Thanksgiving travel down at John Wayne
• But airport statistics show a 5.9% increase overall
·through November of this year.
By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT -
Despite the month containing
what is typically the busiest trav-
el day of the year, airport officials
said overall, passenger travel
was down slightly during
November compared to the
same period last year.
According to airport statistics,
the number of passengers flying
in and out of John Wayne last
month was 551 ,008 -a 3.6%
drop from the 578,085 who used
the airport last November.
Commercial flights also
dropped 4.6%, and commuter
carriers showed a decrease of
21.4 % during November when
compared with the same month
in 1996, officials said.
Only general aviation, which
made up 79% of the airport's
total operations during the
month, increased from last year
-a modest 3% hike, officials
said.
The news of an overall
decline in ridership is somewhat
surprising, given that over the
summer, airport officials took the
precautionary step of warning
two of their busiest carriers -
Southwest and American air-

The cap was part of a deal
that settled a 1980s lawsuit
brought by the city of Newport
Beach against the airport.
The cutback warnings, the
first of their kind issued at John
Wayne, were later dropped
when air travel leveled off, and
no passengers were ever turned
away.

Criticism can be helpful, but
we all should suspect those who
constantly complain without ever
offering praise for a job well

remarkable thing is we have a
choice every day regarding the

day. We cannot change our past

people will act in a certain way.
We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play
on the one string we have, and

Second, it is absolutely impol"-
tant that we maintain a stroog
academic focus that uses student
performance in the basic skills to
chart our course. Test results are
as important to schools as a com-

to its shareholders.
This means that results should
be used for decision making and
accountability purposes, or we
will not have the information we
need to celebrate our accomplish-

doing to further benefit our stu-
dents. lt does no good to blame
our student's family background

test when scores are low. Instead
we must look at student perfor-

necessary changes until scores go
up.
Third, we must mainta.in a

Estancia's Air Force Academy-

Eagles with 14 points and pulled
a team-high 12 rebounds, but did
not escape the team-wide shoot-
ing woes.
· Estancia senior Gavin Rainey

they were the closest to double

Sea Kings overcome slow start to pummel visiting
Santa Ana in the nonleague contest; Dunlap paces
Corona del Mar's second-straight win with 16 points.
ly Mike Sdao:.a, Dal/ Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -It wasn't pretty,
but the Corona del Mar High girls basket-
bell team will hardly quibble with the result
of Pdday Dight's 47-19 nonleague trouncing of visiting Santa Ana.
The Santa Ana bus got stuck in traffic and the Saints arrived at
the CdM gymnasium 30 minutes late.
1bat late start should have served as an omen to Saints, who
could no longer delay the inevitable once the game was underway.
The visitors were run over by the Sea Kings, who padded a 7-2
first-quarter lead by outscoring the Saints, 14-2 in the second eight
minutes.
This one wasn't for the highlight reel. Both teams didn't muster
much precision at the start of the contest. But Qtlce CdM got rolling,
it was no contest.
•we haven't been ready at the set of a game all season.• said
CdM rookie coach Elbert Davis. • u we can
play from the jump, then we can compete
with teams.
We've just had problems getting started
at the beginning of both halves. Maybe we
need a magic potion, or something.•
Both teams had trouble scoring in the
opening quarter.
CdM missed its first seven field-goal
attempts and first free throw befoie a
Sarah Dunlap free throw and a Cara
Ducey putback basket gave the Sea Kings
a 3-0lead
CdM was 3 of 14 from the field in the
first quarter and committed three
turnovers, but Santa Ana, which fell to 1-6,
missed its first 10 shots, all six of its free-
tbrow attempts, and also bad five
turnovers.
The Saints didn'f score until 49 seconds
remained in the quarter, as forward Amelia Martinez's follow shot
ID4de it a five-point game at the quarter.
1beir Santa Ana woes mounted in the second quarter, as the Sea
Kings rolled to their second straight win and their third in eight
games this sea.son.
The Saints once again missed all 10 shots from the field in the
second quarter, and it took a Oaudia Tones free throw to break
another scoring drought.
The game was over at the half, with CdM on top, 21--t.
The hosts extended their lead to 30-7 in the third quarter on a
Ryan Varn.er baseline jumper, but the highlight of the period was
fresbwm Britta Vogele's three-point shot after the Sea Kings had
missed their first five shots to start the half.
Sea King guard Dunlap, the game's leading scorer with 16
points, connected on back·to-back three-point shots in the fowth
quarter.
•Sarah had a nice all·around perlonnance, •Davis said. •She's
our main leader on the floor, and when she gets it goJng, the team
seems to be in rhythm.
•What I liked about this win was that all the girls played well
and as a team. Tb1s is a really good victory for us.•
The entire CdM bench saw action. In addition to Dunlap's 16,
Voge.le added seven points, and center Jennifer Dickson 1aad nine
rebounds.
Ducey came up with two impressive blocked shots in the fourth
quarter.
Cd.M returns to action Dec. 26, by taking on Davis' alma Jn&ter,
Santiago, in the Santiago Tournament.

Association are creating a gap in
the general tennis-playing
public.
The OCCTA was formed after
PTCA members started making
changes, such as eliminating
court availability on Monday
nights for the Sundowners
League, which starts next month.
OCCTA members also claim
that certain private club owners
have eliminated courts for other
leagues, as well, such as those
formerly unrestricted for Hill &
Dale, Hill & Canyon, Hill &
Harbor (now Pacific Sun), and
United States Tennis Association
league play.
Virtual League Tennis, formed
in 1997 by Palisades Tennis Club
owner Ken Stuart, and no doubt
the latest craze around private
clubs, is taking over on Monday
nights at several locations,
according to soUices.
Only members of private clubs
are eligible to join the Virtual
League, which has received
contributions for technical
aspects from the Southern
California Tennis Association
and is sponsored by Wilson,
the official ball ot VLT.
VLT, which features Web
television for real·Ume updates
and statistics on every.match
being played. was dellgned in
pa.rt to fumish dues-paying
members at private clubs
something different from what
every ordinary public player in
the world can join.
PTCA members believe clubs
should offer special packages
and deliver exclusive treatment
because, after all, players can
take their rackets elsewhere and
play for free.
Apartment complexes, high
schools, public parks and ·
homeowners association courts
do not charge to play tennis.
The debate over usage of
private tennis-dub courts for
leagues from the •public sector"
is expected to gain steam in
1998.
While VLT could become the
game's biggest rage in the
coming year for members of
private clubs, it appears to be
the Achilles' heel for others.
•Tue reason for (OCCTA) is
because Orange County tennis is
very fragmented right now,• said
Diane Vaughn, a USTA league
coordinator.
•There are many different
groups in tennis and nobody's
working together. It~ not good
for tennis, and it's not good for
Orange County players to have
to make choices.•
VLT, billed as "the private
club league," begins Jan. 19 at
several clubs and runs through
April 5.
OCCTA members plan to
organize a meeting with PTCA
members next month with the
topic being, •How do we keep
the public sector and private
sector playing together in the
future.•
Here's hoping that in 1998,
community tennis will come
together and not divide. There's
a future at stake. And there are
plenty of courts to go around.
