"He was thrust into a situation

• Police pick up Kent
Xavier Anguiano in South
Dakota. He is charged
with murdering Luis Anto-
· nio Lopez in January 1990.
By Christopher Goffard, Daily Pilot
COSTA tviESA -Police found
Luis Antonio Lopez at a Placentia
Avenue bus stop with his pool cue
at his side and a fatal bullet
wound in his face.
The 25-year-old Costa Mesa
janitor had spent the night shoot-
ing billiards at the now-defunct
Johanna's Bar on 19th Street.
Someone gunned him down
about 300 yards away when be
left the bar just after midnight
Jan. 16, 1990.
M It was a whodunit,• said Cos-
ta Mesa police Lt. Ron Smith.
"We bad no motive.·
Witnesses said Lopez had
quarreled with no one at the bar.
Nearly eight years later,
authorities think they have the

Xavier Anguiano -and point to
a motive explained only by a sin-
gularly demented criminal logic.
Bragging rights.
Police said Anguiano, who was
arrested Nov. 17 in South Dakota,
had been in the bar on the night
of the killing but had not
exchanged words with Lopez and
had no prior relationship with
him.
Over the years, Anguiano
boasted to companions "that be
could shoot someone in cold
blood who hadn't done anything
to provoke it.• Lt. Smith said. "He
kind of wanted to show he could
run with this tough crowd in
Johanna's.•
There are now about a dozen
witnesses, scattered from Orange
County to the East Coast, ready to
testify against Anguiano, though
many were initially reluctant to
testify, Smith said .
Detectives tracked Anguiano
to Spearfish, S.D., where he was
taking vocation.al classes at Bladt
Hills University and trying to pass
himself olf as
an American
Indian among
the denizens
of local reser-
