New needle recycling
program offered
The Costa Mesa Sanitation
Distrld is offering a free recycling
program to safely dispose of nee-
dles and syringes used in homes.
The new service, available
free to residents of Costa Mesa
and Santa Ana Heights, is offered
at two Costa Mesa pharmacies -
North Drugs, 1170 Baker St., and
Steven's Pharmacy, 1525 Mesa
Verde Drive Bast. To participate,
residents can pick up a free
quart-sized container from either
of the pharmacies. Each contain-
er bolds about 100 needles or
syringes. When filled, residents
can return the containers to the
pharmacies for collection and
receive another empty one.
The used needles are picked
up from the pharmacies, steril-
ized and processed into reusable
materials.
For more information on the
district's new needle and syringe
recycling program. call 754-5043.
Council awards
pipeline job
The Costa Mesa City Council
on Monday awarded an Arcadia
contractor the job of installing a
new $318,000 underground storm
drain near the intersection of 19th
Street and Park Avenue. 1be con-
tract -awarded during a -sped.al
meeting scheduled on the coun-
cil's week off to speed up the
eagerly awaited project -went
to W.A. Rasic Construction, which
was the lowest bidder on the job.
The company will be responsi-
ble for installing about a half-mile
of concrete piping in the area,
where there are no storm drains.
Officials hope to break ground
next week and finish the job in
about six weeks.
The city recently received a
federal flood-preparedness grant
that will cover up to 88% of the
project's total cost. The city will
cover the remaining 12%, offi-
cials said.
