Proponents ol the 35-second shot clock in boys basketball, implemented for the first time this season in California, have led a charmed life thus far. According to Newport-Mesa District coaches, and from personal obseivations as well, the shot-clock buzzer bas had about as much presence at games involving local teams as the two-hand set shot But it's way too early to declare that the opponents (myself included) of introducing the shot clock to the last bastion of basketball it had yet to invade were making much ado about nothing and/or clinging stubbornly to the status quo. Corona del Mar Coach Paul Orris and Newport Harbor head man Lany Hirst are among those who believed the shot clock would rob the prep game of, at the very least. the upset-friendly fourth-quarter stall. And while they both agree the 35-second possession limit (before a spot must hit the rim) 'lmllliC'tilf • ..., effeded1heir teams to this point. they are un~ to ClOllcede their fears were without foundation. •rd say it comes into effect about six times a game, where tea.ms have to hurry to get a shot off. before the clock goes off,· Orris said. ·aut it could become more of a factor in league, because everyone scouts each other so wen. Santa Margarita and Servlte/Rosaiy into their own three-team •parochial• league. Llke most everyone else, I've been ineffective predicting how releaguing issues will sort themselves out. But. I believe, bringing a proposal including this imminently appealable three-team league to the CIP Southern Section Council could further jeopardize the timely resolution of the process. Santa Margarita and Servite have already registered their discontent with such a plan (Mater Dei has reserved comment), and would likely exhaustively punue appeals, perhaps even through the courts. Orange County principals, despite the urging of some county superintendents, may have to bite the bullet of leaguing parochial schools with public schools for another two-year cycle, and hope a compromise can be reached in the next releaguing cycle. The principals are scheduled to meet and come up with a proposal (again), Jan. 8. PUBLIC NOTICU PUBLIC NOTICU PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTtCI!
