City ponders
creation of

El ·Toro group
•Move would give city firepower to
fight South County opponents of airport
at soon·to-be-dosed Marine base.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -A city-backed nonprof-
it organization could join the alphabet soup of
acronym-named groups pushing for an airport at
the El Toro Marine base.
Qty officials say they've kicked around sever-
al ideas for launching their 1998 efforts to ensure
the county goes through with turning the closing
base into a commercial
airport. They've been
working for years with
groups such as the
Orange County Regional
Airport Authority and the
Airport Working Group,
but now the"y're trying to
unite those forces against
the powerful South Coun-
ty contingent that oppos-
es the airport.
·we want to rise above
the win-lose mentality,•
said Deputy Qty Manag-
er Peggy Ducey, recently
assigned to focus solely
on airport issues. •we
want to elevate it to a
public policy debate."
She said she wants the
city to provide •accurate,
factual information" to the public.
Don SaJtarelli, a former county supe1V1S0r, has
-beea advising the. city on wa}'5 to thwart anti-air-
port IJvine's recent proposal to annex the base to
control its destiny. He might get involved in form-
ing the nonprofit group, but Ducey said she's not
sure yet whether he'll help the city with other
• issues besides the lrvine annexation.
Sallarelli said he has been privy to some dis-
cussions on starting the group but is sticking to
annexation issues for now. But that doesn't pre-
clude the possibility of him getting involved ln the
future.
"I feel very passionate about people getting the
truth about the airport," he said. "If the opportu-
nity arises I might get involved. Lord only knows
what'll happen in the future.·

A fair debate over park plans
I 'm all in favor of the Fairview
Park plan. I just hope it's not
so expensive or m need of so
much money that nothing will
be done. I just wanted to say I'm
in favor of whatever is done to it
as long as it's kept as a park and
whatever goes into-it I support.

I was reading your artide
about improving Fairview Park
and I do not believe that it's
going to improve the park at all.
If they make it a fire hazard, you
could not access the park and
laying asphalt and making trails
would defeat the whole purpose
and the environment would not
be the same.
So you should leave it the
same, as it is now, and maybe
spend money on maintaining
the way it is.
MELISSA MUEUER

Years ago, a citizen advisory
committee was formed to con-
sider the future of Fairview
Park. After extensive review and
public input, four plans were
presented. One wu chosen.
The coundl listened to 32
speakers and then included stip-
ulations for r8'dsionl based
largely on concerm railed by
the •Johnny come latetya• -
residents whose input was
eagerly solidted .throughout the
laborious planning process. Most
of the concerns of these dtizens
were based on selfish, nanow
interests. Others stemmed from
ignorance.
Certain members of the coun-

rance. One suggested that the
non-obtrusive fencing proposed
be removed after a mere six

Leave the park as it is. We
have so little open land and it
seems to be so tempting to some
people to •tmprove. ·How can
you improve on nature? I say we
should leave it as it is.
DOLORES MINERICH
Costa Mesa
I find it absolutely amazing
that politicians will try and save
a so-called park from itseU
mainly by blocking out residents
and or people wanting to use
the park. It's ridiculous.
There's very few problems
right now with that park in
terms of traffic, people using lt
out of the ordinary, there's very
few VisitQn to that park espe-
cially on the west section over
there near the bluffs.
I think they're probably trying
to somehow get 1n line to get
funds rather than looking out for
the best interests of the people
who want to use the park. For
yean, we've used the park with
no problems whatsoever and
now to have something where
we're going to be feliced off and
not allowed to UJe the park
where tlle bluffs are located is
abiolutely absurd.

I want to thank Lisa Edwards for
writing the wonderful tribute to my
mother, Sara Brant, and the Daily Pilot
for printing the piece on Dec. 11.
Our family misses her tremendously
especially during the holiday season,
her favorite time of year. Because of
the thoughts expressed so well by
Edwards, we know that her contribu-
tions to the community both as a
teacher and as owner of the Children's
Bookshoppe are honored and appreci-

A foundation has been established
in her name at the Newport Beach

It had been a wet winter
with lots of mow on the local
mountains. Then we had five
days of heavy rainfall that not
only put a lot of water on the
ground but melted the snow in
the local mountains. Thu. the
snow from the San Gabriel and
San Bernardino mountains
turned into water and ran
down the slopes of those
mountains into what is now
called the Inland Empire -
Ontario, San Bernardino, River-
side, Redlands, Hemet and
Colton.
All of that water ended
eventually in the Santa Ana
River which drains all that
area. And so it happened that
one night a head of water
about 8 feet in height hit the
head of Santa Ana Canyon.
Fortunately, in those times few
people lived in Santa Ana
Canyon. Now, with all the
building in that canyon such a
ftood would be really cata-
strophic with deaths in the
hundreds or even thousands.
M we all know, the Santa
Ana River makes a sharp tum
to the left at the town of Olive.
Unhappily, there was at the
time a small Mexican colon.ta
located just about the twD of
the river. When that wall of
water hit the colonia, it
drowned more than 50 people.
Then it spread out over the
banks of the river and, just like
the Los Angeles Tunes article
said, it covered all the cities on
low ground.
However, this ftood was
such that it not only covered all
the cities on low ground it cov-
ered everything el.le, too. You
could stand on the bluff in Cos-
ta Mesa and look toward the
bluffs and Huntington Beach,
and in between those bluffs

Oh, yes. One afterthought.
In the map accompanying

Estancia (9-5), led by the solid point guard play of senior
James Dawldns as well as some spirited inside work from
senior Gavin Rainey, opened the third period with a 12-
point blitzkrieg, which all but decided the skirmish.
The first half featured seven ties, though Brett Valbue-
na 's three-point play with 12 seconds left opened the four-
point cushion at the break.
Then, Rainey and Dawkins split the 12-0 run evenly
between themselves, before Valbuena led a parade to the
free-throw line which secured the Eagles' fifth straight
win.
Dawkins, who did not score in the first half, but dished
off five of his seven assists, erupted for 11 of bis 12 points
