The distrlct claims Rauscher knew that the

The school district's complaint against
Rauscher is four-p:onged. dallning:
• Professional negligence foe encourag-

Though police said 80% to 90% of
ocean drowning victims eventually drift
back to shore, Becbler's body has never
been found.
A month after Bechler disappeared,
Coast Guard officials re-created the inci-

Hi.gh's girls basketball team put
five players on the Ooor to start
Tuesday's game against North
Torrance m the Mustangs' winter
Classic Tournament, and from the
tipoff, there was confusion as
JnJury and illness took their toll
with a vengeance.
One Mesa starter was inco-
herent by the end of the quarter
and the Saxons jumped out to an
. .early lead that they would even-

"We've been playing with sev-

Coach Shontel
Sherwood
said, adding
that she has
not seen her
team at full
strength since
a preseason
scnmmage.
Kelly Chapin Sophomore

on the bench wrapped in towels
and ice packs, as she suffered

North Torrance (8-3) took
advantage and mounted a 17-8
lead by the end of the first quar-

don't open our mouths. I'm not
sure u that's an experience thing
or not. It's understanding that you
just take the closest person to
you, but. "
Mesa's seniors, Julie Collett
and Kelly Chapin, tried to rally
their troops with some big plays
and a continuous verbal
onslaught
Chapin got open on the oppo-
site block and Evelyn Powers
found her for an easy two-footer
to cut the Saxon's lead to six.
But the Mustangs (4-9) would
come no closer. On the next four
possessions, Mesa coughed the
ball up three times m the mid-
court area as It tried to get across
the halfcourt line.
The hosts then missed their
hrst seven field goal attempts of
the second half, all the while
committing seven more turnovers
as the Saxons pushed out to a

Coach Rich Boyce said of
his pregame talk, which
must have included a mir-
acle cure for the 32
turnovers the Eagles com-
mitted in Monday's victory
over Rialto.
·1 guess -we corrected
our turnovers by about 90%, • Boyce said. after watching bis squad
commit a minuscule three twnovers, including none in the final 21'
minutes.
The Eagles (10-5 and winners of six straight) needed. to be razor.
sharp against the Chargers (8-4), who were guilty of only five-
tumoven themselves. •
"We knew it was going to be a struggle and it was," Boyce
explained. "But we played solidly all the way through. It feels goocf
to win this tournament, especially two years in a row. That's a tough
, thing to do.·
Both teams showed championship focus throughout, as a sizable
crowd witnessed 1-4 lead changes, until Estancia senior Ga"9'in
Rainey broke a 36-36 deadlock with a three-point play with 3:26 lei(
in the third quarter. •
Edison cloeed to within one point three times from there, the final
occasion on a Raden Sami three-pointer to open tQeJ~ ~.
But ~ Eaglet countered with a 9-2 run, including -badt-tO-badc
buckets by senior point guard J8'Pes Dawkins, the latter from three-
point range. • :
Estancia senior and tournament Most Valuable Player Sam Nel-
son later added seven straight Eagle points in th~ final 2:~ 1.0
secure the triumph. the fourth in five days for the toumament bolts.
•1 knew I bad to step up, because the last couple nights, I baven'l
played well," said Nelson, who finished with a game-high 31
points. The 6-foot-5, Air Fo'rce Academy-bound standout bit 11 of
18 field-goal attempts, including 6 of 8 in the second half. He a1sQ
corrected some recent woes from the foul line, sinking 6 of 8.
"I couldn't hit a free throw to save my Uie (Monday night, when
he hit 6 of 13). so I got to the shoot-around about .an hour early today.
and just shot free throws," Nelson said. •0nce I started bitting free
throws, my shot started to work, too.•
Nelson was also generous with praise for bis teammates, includ-
m9 an all-tournament performance by Dawkins (15 points and four
assists), five points and five boards from Rainey, as well as the
inaeasingly consistent bench support from juniors Brett Valbuena
and Peter Anderson.
Valbuena extended his consecutive free-throw streak to 17, cov-
ering three games, before finally rattling one otf the rim, and fin.,
ished with six point.a .
Andenon scored just five points, but added five rebounds and
four a.ssistl, all seemingly at the ma.t audal junctures of the game.
Charles Keju also played well, bitting both shots from the field.
while senior Ryan SimJ>9011 provided a physical presence against
the always-rugged Chargers.
•There's no team I like to beat more than Edison, because they
are always throwing elbowt and punching you in the back,• Nel-
son said. ·we knew Edison would be tough."
All-tournament selection Daniel Neb.rig paced Edison with 24
points and 11 iebounds, while point guard Jeff Harrell. the Cbarg·
en other all·tollinam.ent cholca and tbe brother of Newport Harbor
boys assistant coach Todd Harrell. added eight points.
