Predicted Craziness fizzles as .new millenllium daWns

blips on a fairly quiet hQliday screen, police say.

For all the hype, all the prepa-
ration and all the specuJation
about the world's impending
downward spiral, the dawn of a
new rnillerutium went quietly as
revelers partied into the morning
hours Saturday.
There was nary a disturbance
in fireworks-Crlendly Costa Mesa
and glamorous Newport Beach.
Although each police depar:t-

putting additional officers on the
street, neither saw any major
dlsturbances.

reported they didn't have any
arrests between 11 p.m. New

morning, a JUime time for prob-

four arrests were made all
evening, one which stemmed
from a shooting late Friday after-
noon that sent a 21-yec.r-old
Anaheim man to the hospital for
gunshot w9unds. Albert Sum-

arrested on attempted murder

There were only two alcohol-

involved drunk drivers.

An important piece of Balboa's

-'With the opening of the theater -at
least that's what proponents are hop-

The Balboa Theater renovation

Pettit and Ronald Baers became con-
cerned about saving the historic, yet
crumbling, theater. Together, they
formed the nonprofit Balboa Per-

a major blaze was washed away
by a sporadic storm that show-
ered the county with its first taste
of ram in several months.
Though there were some
reports of loud firewotks and
gunfire, police said the atmos-
phere was relatively calm for a
predicted craziness. •
•People didn't go out and stir
things up,• said Sgt. Lany Hicks.
•1t was pretty quiet around these parts.. .
Newport Beach police echoed
the same sentiment as well. In a
town known to have its lavish
parties, just 22 people were
arr~sted during the New Year's
celebrations. Six of those were
arrested on suspicion of driving

SCHOOL DISTRJCT TO VOTE
TONIGHT ON BONO MEASURE
As the Newport-Mesa Uni-
fied school board reconvenes
Jan. 11, members will hear the
facilities committee recommen-
dation that a bond measure be
placed on the upcoming ballot
to pay for refurbishing schools.
It will then be up to the
school boa.rd to decide if they
want to look to the community
for the money to repair the rav.-
aged schools.
U the board decides to put a
school bond on the ballot, it
could mean lµgher taxes for
everyone living m Newport-
Mesa. It may also be the only
hope the district has to fix the
schools. Por the past year, the
Newport-Mesa Unified School
Oistlict bas been researching
what needs to be done to repair
Jts crumbling classrooms.
Over the course of the year
the pnce tag for renovating lbe
deteriorating schools made sev-

estimated $15-million project
Ultimately leaped to $163 mil·

The facilities committee, a
group of local business and
dvtc leaders, has been explor-
ing leVeral options, Lnduding
lhe Mle of distrlct property and
applying for stote funding.
But after months ol racking
their brains, memben of the
committee say they see no oth-

money.

Newport Beach is standing
at a crossroads. On the one
hand, the recent five-year
tin8ndal forecast indicates the
city is going to need more mon-
ey. On the other, many resi-
dents feel further development
will compromise their quality of
life.
Next year, the council will
review a number o! high-end
developments that would bri{lg
in tourists with money to spend.
For e.xample, the million dollar

The Mari.napark proposal is
for a t 56-room resort hotel that
would include limited meeting

NEWPORT BEACH -Al the start of
the 1999 boys water polo season, Corona
del Mar High senior Garrett Gentry and
Sea Kings Coach John Vargas were not
with their team. Gentry was with the U.S.
junior youth team, while Vargas was
coaching the U.S. national team in
Olympic qualifying action.
At the end or the season, both of them
JNe~ celebrab.ng the ClF Southern
Section Division Il championship, and.
along with Newport Harbor's Peter
Belden, they lead the Daily Pi.lot
All-Newport-Mesa Distnct Dream Team.
G~ntry and Belden are Co-MVPs, while
V~rgas is the Coach of the Year.
:Vargas calls Gentry a utility player and
tbough it may be an understatement, it
<lescribes what Gentry did for CdM. He
can play in the two-meter spot, out on the
Wing, or; at the point. While Gentry, a
senior, led CdM in scoring, he~ just as
adept with a pass that sets up a goal
Gentry's strong body makes him
~angerous tn froot of the goal, where he
bas a variety of moves. Bht he has
deceptive speed which makes him
dangerous on the counter. This versatility
also earned him b.im Pacific Coast League
MVP honors. ,,
Like Gentsy, Bclden's veBatility ma$}e ·
him invaluable for Newport Harbor,
which spent part of the season ranked
atop the ClF Division 1 poll and reached

the penalty shots.
While bis offensive ability is dazzling,
it is bis defense that really sets him apart.
Belden recorded 93 steals in the year. He
held Gentry to one goal when the two
rivals met in the South Coast Tournament,
and held Long Beach Wilson's Albert
Garcia to one goal in three penods in a
11-5 win.
Newport senior goalie 1im Birdsong,
MVP of the Sea View League, is another
Dream Team selection.
His long arms allowed him to deflect
many shots,· but it was not only bis
defensive prowess which made him a
threat. Birdsong has an uncanny ability to
get the 'ball down the pool for a quick
counter and has 17 assists to prove it. Hls
passing starts Newport's offense, which
makes him the Sailors' key figure gomg
both ways.
CdM junior Garret Bowlus announced
himself to the Southern Section water polo
world at the most opportune time, scoring
four goals in an 8·6 win over SeMte in
the CIF title game. Bowlus developed as
the season went along, and, by the end,
be made opposing defenses pay for
placing too much focus was on Gentry.
Newport Harbor junior Ryan Cook
developed a chemistry with Belden and
really turned it on in the CIF playoffs
His best game was against Loyola ln the
second round, where he scored four
goals in an 8·6 Newport win. Cook also
displayed a deft passing touch, and bis 65
assists was the team high.
Senior Brendan Hansen might not
score as many goals as his teammates
Belden or Cook, but the first-team•AlJ-Sea
View player IS a tough de fender. Hansen
was second on the Sailors with 52 steals.
On offense, he directs traffic from the top
and keeps d efenses honest wtth his ability
to shoot.
CdM senior goa]e Brad Netherton

Servile was openly concerned about its
ability to get the ball inside before the ClF
finals against Niehenke. ln the finals, the
Friars got three goals from the two-meter
spot.
CoSta Mesa senior Mike Vaillancourt
was simply a bull from the two-meter
spot, where he used bis strength and skill

score faced up, with bis bac,k facmg the
goal, or from the outside, and that led PCL
coaches to vote him first-team all-league.
