Fire guts
condo garage
Flames reaching 20 feet
high erupted at 4:05 a .m. Sat-
urday in the 2000 block of
Barranca in Corona del Mar,
causing $70,000 in damages
to a condo garage, authorities
said.
It took 21 minutes for fire-
fighters to ~alm the fire,
which was shooting through
the detached gara~ door-
way and almost hit the condo,
authorities said. The cause of
the fire has not been deter-
mined.
While no one was injured,
a police officer did have to
help evacuate a woman and
girl who were inside the
home. A man and two boys
had already gotten out of the
home.
Neighbors who first
noticed the fire and smoke
alerted the sleeping resi-
dents. Then the neighbors
· and the residents called the
,fire depamnent.

NEW PLAN IN PLACE·
FOR CRYSTAL COYE
The state parks department
should bear an earlul at its Jan. 18
public briefing abo\,lt the future of
Crystal Cove.
Following through on its 1996
hiring of San Franasco developer
Passport Resorts, the state parks
department set the meeting to lay
out plans to convert the 46 beach-
, side cottages into a $35-nullion
luxury resort.
Environmental groups active on
~the issue have vowed to block the
resort plan even whtle some of
them, indudi.ng the Alliance to
Rescue Cry~ Cove, began talks
with the state and Passport's Crys-
tal Cove Preservation Partners on
an alternative project.
The labor of several weeks of
closed-door sessions should bear
rruit ~ly in the year, since both
the state and developer have said
they would back an alternate plan.
Yet the state hasn't pulled the
current plan off the table, saying its
parks board could vote on 1t 10 the
spril)g. The plan also must secure
the approval of the Callforrua
Coastal Commission.
The state bought the land in
1979 from the lrvine Co. That same
year il was placed on the National
Register of Historic Places, a listing
that has added another wrinkle to
the development process. The cot-
tages, some of which were built in
the 1920s, are examples or "beach·
front vernacular" arcbltecture. As
an entry on the registry, they must
be restored to strict standards.

• Santa Barbara is no match
for the swarming Sailorsl 9-1.
Steve Virgen
DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT BEACH -Confident,
loose and taking advantage of its
momentum,.euctrwe.s the mentality of
the Newport Harbor High girts water
polo team in the championship game
of its Holiday Cup tournament Satur·
day.
With a Muhammad-Ali-type aura
about them, the Sailors knocked out
Santa Barbara, 9-1. in dominating
fashion as Harbor (9-1) apded a preci-
sion offense to its attacking defense:·
"They were loose and ready to
roll,· Sailors Coach Bill Barnett said.
"They were just giddy and came out
on fire. We just had more team speed.
And, that caused (Santa Barbara) a lo\
of problems."
The Dons (f?-2) went down for the
count early. The Tars, ranked No. 3 in
Orange County with a nine-game
winning streak, built a 4-1 first-period
lead as they connected on four of their
five shot attempts.
Harbor senior Jenna Booth, who
led wjth three goals, pegan the scor-
ing 24 seconds into the game. Erin
Ball won the sprint which led to
Booth's goal that came off an assist
from Katherine Belden.
·we were just pumped and rea~
to win our tournament," said Beldeil,
a junior wbo finished wtth two goals,
four assists and four steals. ·we defi-
nitely belong in the Top 3 . I would say
our defense is No. t right now."
After Booth's goal, sophomore
Paige Lansing scored twice. With 3:43
remaining in the first quarter, Lansing
sped out on a counterattack and fin.
ished for the score ..
Less than two minutes later. Lans-
ing stole the baLI and w.as alone on a
breakaway. She went one-on-one
with Charlotte Grey, scooped the ball
with her left hand and slapped it in
with her right.
·once we got our momentum
going,· Lansing said. •we felt like we
could take it and run. We were feeling
really strong: We didn't know much
about them and in that case we
weren't really scared of them. We
weren't scared at all.·
The Dons coll~ed their only goal
in the first quarter when Molly Cahill
scored just as Booth reentered on an
extra-player opportunity.
Jenna Murphy, a left-handed
sophomore, closed out the scoring in
the first quarter for the Tars.
Harbor's strong start appeared to
rattle Santa Barbara. The Dons never
answered, never made a threat. And,
the Sailors kept stinging.
No-shows, however. dampened
the conquest. .
Foothill, Capistrano Valley and
Santa Margarita were not at full
strength because of top players COJJ\·
peting in national circles. Foothill still
gave a strong fight against Harbor
without two of its best players, before
falling, 5-3, on Fnday.
The Krughts defeated Capistrano
Valley in the third-place game, as
Foothill came from behind for an 8-7
overtime victory.
. "There's no doubt that Foothill and
Capo are still the teams to beat,· Bar-
nett said. "But, I'm just pleased with
the way we're progressing. The most
important thing for us now 1s to focus
on Irvine. That first league game (Jan.
10 at Irvine) is the most important by
far. It can give you a good seeding in
the CIF playoffs.·
The Tars strengthened their future
with a relentless attack on offense and
goalkeeper Heather Deyden anchor-
ing the defense. She firushed with
nine saves.
Harbor's offense opened the sec-
ond half with three goals in the first
five minutes.
Booth recorded a steal and hnisbed
for a score on the breakcgway. Fifty-
two seconds later, Be1<1en wowed the
crowd with a backhand shot. And, lat-
er Jessica Ball connected on a goal
with Lauren Boreta draped over her.
Everything seemed to be going
Harbor's way as Booth ended the scor-
ing with six minut6 remaining.
