For the ace defense lawyer, peeling away the layers of a complex case is like piecing together a puzzle. Irs what he enjoys most about his job. • Barnett, 52, is representing Bechler, who stands accused of killing his wife, Pegye, during a boating trip three years ago. The trial resumes today.after a two- week break. What makes the case inter· ~g and intriguing? The body of 38-year-old Pegye Bechler was never found. Barnett is best known for defending Los Angel~ Police Officer Theodore Briseno, who was acquitted in the 1992 state trial of the poliee beating of Rodney King. Barnett also won acclaim for successf:ully delend- ing fonner Marine Thomas Mer- rill, who was accused of a ttou- ble slaying in a 1989 robbery. at a Newport Beach coin shop, incarcerated for five yea.rs and then freed in 1995 when a jury acquitted him. Jennifer Kho DAILY PitOT COSTA MESA -Two City Coun- ctl members on Tue~day called for a new vote on a controversial skate- board park at Charle and Hamilton streets. A deadlocked and divided counal was forced to return to familiar, con- troversial ISsues surrounding a skate- board park at C'1arle and Hamilton streets. The council had not made a deci- sion by press time, but it appeared that a mollon made by CounoJ.r....-. woman Karen Robinson to reverse an earlier council decision to build the park and to research other sites would not pass. Robinson, along wtth Councilman Chris Steel, said that alter reviewing aty documents regardmg the deci· s1on, they don't want the city to build a park at that site. • 1 still have substantial concerns that the Charle and Hamilton site is not an appropriate one for a skate- board park,• Robinson sai,d, "The council is now on notice that this ls not a sale place. I believe we have a need for a skate park, we deserve two skate parks. But we cannot forego safety just to get one done. We need to pick the ct>rrect site.· The location of the park in a mixed residential zone instead of in a com- munity park. the size of \h~ lot, the proxunity to homes, the lack of restrooms on the site and the lack of sidewalks were some of the reasons Robinson said she opposes the site. Steel said he would like to revote on the issue with a full council and with more information from staff.
