Councilindn C hris Steel joined Robinson m opposmg the ~1te at Charl e dnd Hamil- ton streets, which means Mondhan -who previously voted for the project -could be the necessary third vote to reverse the council's October approvdl of the skate pcUk. •It's jW>l a horrible site for a skateboc1rd pdrk," Mondhan said. "lf we're going to hdve one, the kid~ deserve a better spot. We could bwld two to three smd.IJ parks for the pnce we're going to spend on the Charle and Hanulton pcuk FIS- cally and from d Sdfety sldnd· pomt, I believe it's a bad site.• Counolwoman l..uida Ducon and tviayor Libby Cowan have continued to support the Chdrle and Hanulton streets site "It's the prerogdbve of cmy City Counol member to call somethmg up for a reheanng." Cowan said ·But I tlunk we've fehashed th.IS. We've made a deosion. We need to support this and go forward. I can tell you that any site will be deemed unsafe or unwanted by the peo· ple in the neighborhood. I thmk the [park! is an amenity to add -to a neighborhood that doesn't have a lot of public amenities." City officials and residents have for more than two years debated the location or the park. The city has been inter- ested in buildmg a park for 10 years and began looking at locations tn 1998, when the state law changed to protect cities from skateboard liability. Counol membels approved a skate park last year at Uons Park but changed their minds after neighborS' pointed out potential flooding and traffic problems. With designs for the Charle and Hamilton park now in the final stages, city staff are less than a month away from bid- ding for a contractor to build the park -although plans may be tossed back to the drawing board if the COW\ol votes to reve~ its October decision. Residents continue to express emotional oputions about a skateboard park and its location. A number of Costa Mesa skateboarders said they are frustrated that there may be yet another delay in the oty's attempts to build a park. *1lus has got to get fin- 1Shed," said Chuck Hultz, a Costa Mesa skateboarder. ·nus IS ridiculous. It is not worth going over 1t all agdiri, ang I'm shocked the rww council mem- bers have the power tp cfo that so soon. . . . Having to ska1e dcross the street to get to the park has to be saler than what they're doing now -skate- boarding in the street every day. How can not building a skate- board _park be saler?" But other residents said they were worried the city's haste Lo placate skateboarders could cost the children their salety. •I felt relieved that our efforts were actually befug heard and our pomt of view actually being acknowledged,• said Hector Jiminez, who lives near the site. "Now it's seepmg in and, once the lcounol memben;J reali:ze how grave this error will be, we feel we can win them over.· Connie Duddridge of Cos- ta Mesa said a skateboard park is necessary but not at the current site. "I hope (Steel! gets with the program and figmes out that [the _skateboard park! is some- thing the kids here need,• she said. ·But I'm glad the issue is being given more attention because the site is far from being a great location. in my opinion and my kij}s' opi!Por1S. • Aroulicl TOWN • Send MOUND TOWN items to the Delly Piiot 330 W. ' ... :coMMUNitY AIO Thursday, January 4, 2001 EDITORIAL Let's set goals and make this a . happy new year 0 n the natiohaJ and international stage, 2000 certainly didn't live up to the tumultuous and dire predictions that preceded it. No gf'1 nt computer crashes. No planes f alllng from the sky. No ATM machines spitting out · -__ money. But while the much-anticipated world drama 11 didn't pan out, there was no shortage of it here, with the fi ght over the anti-El Toro Measure F, the squab- bles between library trustees and the fo undation, the contentious and costly battles over the Greenlight lnillative and. of course. the surprise adclitions to the Costa Mesa City Council. Newport Beach in part.Icular had a raucous year with the anti-growth battle that pitted friends and family members against each other in the debate over the city's future developments. And Costa Mesa is already showmg ttiat with the addition of council members Chris Steel and Karen Robinson, there could be more rancor on the council than accord . .. -.. -................. - So just as President-elect George W. Bush has promised a new spirit of co111promise and bipartisan- ship, we'd like to propose the same for our local leaders arrd residents. Let's make 2001 the year that petty diffe re nces are set aside and goals a re reached in a number of quarters. There's much to accomplish. Top on the list should be a new set of flight restric- tions and passenger caps for John Wayne Airport that will put to rest any ideas of e xpansion and ensure some semblance of tranquillity for our residents. In Newport Beach, city leaders need to face the new reality of Greenlight and develop new guide- lines that will allow developers and residents to live in harmony once again. 1 But most of all, we propose that we all get better at communication . Not only should local council members make every effort lo hear the concerns of their constituents, but those same constituents need to become more involved with local government so they will always feel that their voices are heard. If we can all adhere to this final goal, the rest will be easy to attain. Happy new year. We could then take our place alongside other upscale beach cilles in this respect at least. SAUY PADGETT Costa Mesa Human evolution is just a theory, not fact J ohn T. Chiu's letter ("Readers Respond: Debate continues over school board snub,• Dec. 21) reveals a dearth or knowledge about the oper- auon of the Newport-Mesa school board and an unrea- soned bias regatding the teachings of the theory of evg,?4tlon as the sole expla- nation for the origin of man. His essertion that •a board member merely reflects the views of a small group of residents, but a board president reprE!sents the whole district• is false. Each member, although required to live within a designated geographical lhlstee Area, is elected by and &erves (i.e. represents) the entire school district. Furthermofe, the office of president, as the Daily Pilot editonal ("Snub of Leece raises ques- tions,• Dec 10) ' stated, 1s merely ceremoru- al in nature, Ila Johnson and the president of the board has no real authority as a spokesperson. With regdTd to Chiu's comments on evolution, the theory of evolution has never been conclusively proven. That is why It is called the theory of evolution. Has he not heard of the •missing · link"? A theory is simply a system of assumptions based on I.bruted ln.f ormabon and distinguished from expen-. ment or practice, in essence, a hypothesis. Evolution can't be proved by experinlent, as can other laws of nature, such as the laws of physics, mathematics or gravity. Chiu asks: "What mes- sage are we sending to the rest of the world and our cluldren by having a spokesperson of the board casting doubt on evolution?" The message would sim- ply be the truth, that there may be another possible explanation for the origin of man. Teaching e volution · exclusively mlsrepre5ents theory as fact and perpetu- ates a falsehood. Teaching evolution as fact and the only explanation for man's existence ls false, it pre- cludes the idea that there ls purpose to lile and under- mines the values thQt many children learn at home. Unfortunately, that is preosely what public edu- cation has become all . about: changing children's values and attitudes, as opposed to developing the intellect and imparting facts and knowledge. Chiu's patent disregard for those values and the true purpose of education is inexcusable, and like the school board majority's actions in refusing Leece her tum es president, ls also appalling.
