I esson No. 1 iS always the
same for the men and
women who train to join
the troupe of Peking Acro-
bats: Learn how to .fall.
It's a safe bet that every per-
former in the 28-member group,
which comes to OCC Saturday
evening, will take a spill at some
point dwing a rehearsal of their
routine. The complicated tum-
bling, balancing and gymnastic
feats they perform are, by design,
tricks that pu§b fhe limits of
human agility.
Don Hughes, who co-pro-
duces the tours of the
troupe from his Pismo
Beach office and has
worked with the group
for 27 years, says he's
watched the complexity
of the routine gradually
increase over the
years. Each generation
of acrobats tries to per-
form the tricks slightly
faster, slightly higher
and in a way that's
slightly more dangerous
than the approach their
predecessors developed.
It used to be, Hughes
said, that the Peking Acro-
bats would create a •pagoda
of chairs,• a balancing act
involving stacked chairs, as a
finale for their act.
"The chairs used to go straight
up. They would get up to the top,
and they would do a one-handed
bonzontal handstand,• Hughes
said.
But that act, which wowed
Hughes a few decades back, is
now a mere •throwaway.• The
pagoda has evolved into some-
thing far more mind-bending and
precarious.
The chairs are now stacked on
one another at-45-degree angles,
Hughes said. Four members of the
troupe ascend to the top of the
construction, which shakes and
chatters with their every move-
ment.
Then, with disaster seemingly
inevitable, all four acrobats extend
themselves into graceful band-
stands.
"That's when you bite your
nails,• Hughes said. •u that first
chair's not balanced, they'll all
come down. And th~y have come .
T he Peking ·
Ac robats bring
th e ir
e xtrao rd inary
tal ents to OCC
on Saturday
down."
The troupe members' desire to
challenge themselves and keep
their routine evolving is part of the
proud acrobatic tradition of China,
Hughes said.
Acrobatics are said to go back
thousands of years in that country.
Records exist of tricks performed
by skilled troupes during than the
Han Dynasty, which began in 206
BC.
"There are paintings.in caves of
some of these tricks,• Hughes
said. •They still do it the same
way.•
Today, nearly 100,000 people
study acrobatics at schools that
specialize in the art, Hughes
said. Children begin training to
attend these academies when
they are very young and may
begin working professionally as
early as age 9.

•vou've got to be
a damn good acro-
bat to be profes-
sional, and then
ygu've got to stand
out even more to
be in a group like
(the Peking Acro-
bats),• Hughes
said.
Within each
group, there is a
constant drive to
refine the techniques
in the repertoire.
"What they do is
look at someone else's a
and they say, "Oh, that's
good,' • Hughes said. And then
they try to figure out how to do it
better.
But for the Peking Acrobats,
improving the show never means
making the props more elaborate
or the staging more showy. As
Hughes pointed out, every rou-
tine the troupe performs uses
only ordinary household items:
chairs, knives and forks, a bicy-
cle, a stick of bamboo.
The only way to take an act a
step further, therefore, is to add
risk. If getting 10 people on a
bicycle seems impressive, they
try for 14. U balanchrg on a rope
with shoes on manages to wow a
crowd, they do it on a wire, bare-
foot.
And always, Hughes said,
they make it look easy.
"They do it with a smile," be
said -the stnile of men and
·women managing, just barely, to
keep their act under control.

The disease itself came to be

Actually, no one dies from
the flu. lt's the complications,

be fatal. Well, this is uplifting,

Few solutions for

·Baggage checkS in, doesn't check out

people to live here.
ANDREW GLAZER'

COSTA MESA
There's little the City can do
on its own to significantly
satisfy increasing demand
for affordable housing, City
officials said in a report
earlier this week.
The report said the city
should expand on its pre-
existing affordable hous-
ing programs -which
include providing grants,
loans and incentives for
property owners to build
and maintain affordable
housing -instead of seek-
ing revolutionary new
housing policy options.
Flocks of people drawn
by the area's booming
eoonomy are moving into
Costa Mesa, causing rents
to soar and propelling
home prices up by 15% to
20% each')tear, the report
said.
Muriel Ullman, the city's
neighborhood unprove-
ment manager who pre-
pared the report, was
unavailable for comment.
The city's. lower-incomt1"
workers, who are helping
to fuel the thriving econo-
my, are increasingly com-
muting here from more
affordable homes as far
away as Riverside County,
the report said.
But ~ause the sphere
of rising home and rental
prices is expanding
throughout m.uch of South-
ern Calltornia, it would be
difficult for Costa Mesa to
make a big difference with
local· policy changes, City
Manager Allan Roeder
said.
"Costa Mesa can't solve
the problem itself,• he
said. "But the council
believes if every city made
some accommodations to
provide for some afford-
able housing, we ·could
make a dent in the situa-
tion.. r
Roeder said there isn't
much vacant land left in
the city to build large, new
housing complexes. He
said it should instead focus
on assisting programs that
enc9urage nonprofi(
groups or private property .
owners -with grants or
loans -to upgrade,
improve and manage
existing buildings that are
in bad shape.
He said fhe city also
should look into continuing
to subsidizel'some Habitat
For Hwruiruty single-fami-
ly home project:S.
The city should even
consider increasing the
$15,000 limit it currently
will loan property owners
to refurbish deteriorated
rental homes, the report
said.
•Jt's frustrating," Roeder
said. " We want to find a
solution. But unfortunately,
these options are very
expensive and we have
limited resources.•

The latest safety precau-

the administration is to test

Federal officials -in

how well they do in spotting
dangerous items by show-

Barker said it is too early

woman Nghia Nguyen said
the auport is both safe and

The administration
heightened security at John

with a new screening
machine, called an explo-

Chargualaf said the high-
tech computer can detect
chemicals that are used in
making bombs.
The device is so sensitive
it can be triggered by some-
thing as routine as nitro-
glycl3rin, a common heart
medication, Chargualaf
said.
•Sometimes .. a lot of

general p}tln allows. The
thresholds apply to ach of 49
disbict neighborhOOds·in the
dty, not the dty as ctwhole.
The portion supporters
want cleared up is a require-
ment that 80% of the chdJlges
to the general plan ouring the
preceding 10 yea.rs be added
to the numbers of a proposed
project. That means how the
"initiative is applied would be
affected by amendments
approved before it existed.
Greenlight proponent
Allan Beek said the problem
could be fixed if the city
council interprets that ldn-
guage to mean that the 10
years starts when the mea-
sure is passed, "recogmzing
that if we counted (the previ-
ous 10 years), then nearly
everytiting in some areas
would have to go to the vot~
ers."
Beek said there are seven
areas m tho city that are
maxed out in either one, two
or all three of the Grcenlight
thresholds. They are· Old
Newport Blvd. (traffic, square
feet and homes); Santa Ana
lieights, (square feet); New-
port Center, (traffic and
square feet); NorU1 Ford Roa a
(traffic, square feet and
homes}; the airport area
(square f~t); Corona del Mar
Hills (square feel); and Bonita
Canyon (traffic, square feet
and homes).
But proponent Phil Arst
said those areas -particular-
ly Newport Center and the
airport area .:.. are precisely
~ congested portions of the
city in which the group wants
voters to have a say.
•There may be an extra
procedure (in voting on
smaller projects), but that \,s
the price you pay for getting
the big ones,• Arst said.
Both Beek and Arst said
they hope the city will adopt
the guideline they are
proposing
But city officials said

Thursday that uch a fiX is
changing more th n just the
spuit of the measure and in
fact could land the city in
legal hot water.
"If it gets voted in, we'll
have to make 1t work;• said
councilman Gary Adams.
-nie council is ducy-oound to
enact something that main·
tains the spirit of the initia-
tive.•
The reason for the cumula·
tive portion of the measure
was so developers couldn't
simply work around the ini·
tiative and incrementally
build homes or office space
until they reached their goal
number, Mt said .
But because of the way the
city's general plan has been
amended dwing the last 10
yea.rs, it is difficult to deter·
mine the exact number of
extra homes, peak-hour traf,
fie trips and square footage
increases that have occurred.
Beek, who conducted a
study to determine how many
existing city developments
would have been voted on in
the last 10 years if the mea-
sure had been in effect,
acknowledged that the data
was confusing and said he
could pot be suteJ!..ftls.figures
were accurate.

Beck said. "U the City Coun-
cil adopted (10 years in the
future) as a guideline, I don't
think we'd object.•
But C1ty Manager Homer
Bludau said he doesn't
believe the council can make
a change of this magnitude.
"The council can make
mterprctations to meet the
intent and spirit of Uie fuitia-
tive. But that wouldn't be an
interpretation,• Bludau said~
"I would expect us to be sued
iJ we tried to do that."
The only way to change
the city charter again would
be a public vote, he $'.aid,
adding that if the initiative
passes, the city will just have
to work Wlth the measure as it
is.
Officials said that means
residents may have to keep
up on their homework, read
environmental and planning
reports and go to the polls.
Councilwoman Jan Debay
said she fears it could result in
an Wlengaged electorate. She
said she has already received
a number of calls from resi-
dents saying they didn't real-
ize the initiative was so com-plicated.~
"People aren't going to go

said.

According to county, docu-
ments, Alternative F would
triple the size of the existing
terminal lo 1.1 million square
feet. It would 1J1crease the
number of passenger and
cargo flights, increase trafftc
and limit general aviation.
There would be a small
increase in noiSe, but the
report says noise would not
exceed levels set in the 1985
settlement agreement. It
does conclude that Alterna-
tive F would hurt the envi-
ronment and the surround.mg
community.
However, Eaton, a former
city planner who dissected

pages of the report, said

· The drastic change would
include a 2,300-fool exten-
sion to the existing main run-
way, a new 6,700-foot run-
way and the addition of more
than 1.8 million square feel of
terminal area.
Meg Waters, a spokes-
woman for a coalibon of cities
who oppose an airpOrt at El

expand John ' (Wayne will
never become reality. She
agreed, however, that the
report presented the alterna-
tives as very fright(:?ning pos-
sibilities, But. she said the
county was merely trying to
scare Newport Beach resi-
dents, who have for years
been . fighting against John

legislation' might require
Costa Mesa .-which
receives nearly half its rev-

portion to the state.
Meanwhile, City Council
members are busy penciling
their wish lists of how to

money at its Feb. 7 meeting.
Mayor Gary Monahan con-

potentially threatening state
legislation.
"It would not be a good
deal for Costa Mesa if the
legislation passed," he said.
"We need to get involved

But Monahan, along with
Councilman Joe Erickson,
said the majority of the sur·

A s we said farewell to the last

the Newport-Mesa golf
community, Keitt\. Wyrick of
Newport Beach Goll Course staged
quite a closing act.
Wyrick, who beat the bushes
hard on the Southern California
senior circuit m '99, captured first
place m lus own event, the
inaugural Holiday Senior Classic
Pro-Am, for his unofficial 20th
victory of the year.
A scrapper around the golf
course with a short backswing like
Allen Doyle on the Senior PGA
Tour, Wyrick founded and
organized the Hobday Classic
Pro-Am Dec. 23 to raise funds for
his niece and nephew who suffer
from cystic fibrosis.
And, as far as Wyrick's
concerned, the event· was a smash
on and off the course, capping a
busy year.
~1·m in nowhere's ville," said
Wyrick, who juggled three different
tours in '99 and played in more
events (54) than there are weeks in
the year.
Wyrick, 47, was the combined
leading money winner for
Southland seniors on the Golden
State, King Stahlmans and
Townament Players tours,
capturing 19 titles in '99. But the
we·ar and tear on his body, not to
mention his brand new van, took its
toll.
·How mmy people you know
played in 54 tournaments in a
year?" Wyrick said. •My '99 van is
only three months old and it
already has 8,400 miles on it. That's
a \ot of driving." >ro prevent from getting burned
out, Wyrick will scale back his
playing schedule in 2000 to about
20 events.
In the first Hollday Senior
Classic iPro-Am, Wyrick, the affable
and longtime Newport Beach Golf
Course starter and course record
holder, created a mini senior tour
event with a $2,000 purse at stake.
In addition, the event served as a
fund-raising vehicle for a cystic
fibrosis charity and featured a
family theme in each foursome.
Wyrick took top honors,
shooting seven-under-par 52 to win
$500. Hank Woodrome (Fullerton)
was second at 54 ($400), followed
by Glenn Stuart (Carlsbad) and Jeff
Walker (Lakewood) at 55 (both
winning $275). .
Costa Mesa's Mark Kendrich
and Carlsbad's Max Anderson tied
for fifth at two-under 57 and earned
$225 each. Gary Dixon (Fountain
Valley) shot 58 ($175) as the
seventh senior pro to sboot under
par with the Santa Ana winds
blowing at Newport Beach Goll

· An event to benefit Children's

NEWPORT BEACH -With no field

mere three points, Thursday's first h.alf
was atypical for Corona del Mar High's
girls basketball star.
But, after intemussion, Pacific Coast
League VlSitor Estancia got a healthy
dose of the real Kristin McCoy.
The 5-foot-8 juruor erupted for 24 sec-
ond-half points, including every one of
her team's tallies du.ring a 17-4 Cd.M
run, to help the hosts tum a 24-20 half-
time deficit into a 55-32 victory.
The win helped CdM (14-4, 2-0 in the
PCL and loser of its final 33 Sea View
League games through last season) join
Costa Mesa atop the PCL standings.
