A lost soul finds,
and returns,
a little love
TI is a story of rehabili-
tion and triwnph, a
ory of a lost soul who
-though it was hard to see
at first -made a difference.
When I f¥st met Morgan,
she was in lock-down at the
far edge of the county animal
shelter, a place of steel and
wire mesh and concrete. This
is where they bring the
castoffs, the hopelessly lost,
the malcontents, the unloved,
those who just haven't qwte
bad a fair
shake in
life.
Morgan
wasn't the
kind of dog
you were
inst:il)ctively
drawn to.
She sat,
slack-jawed
in the back
of a pen,
withdrawn,
brooding. I
figured her
as a higb-

date, proba-
bly filled

with a dark anger over the
hand she'd been dealt.
My daughter, though, had
a soft spot for the unfortu-
nates of the world. She want-
ed the dog, she named the
dog right then and there and
-sure enough -that dog
came home with us that day.
The workers at the pound
didn't know much about Mor-
gan, only that she'd been
found wandering. Maybe
she'd been dumped, maybe
she was lost, or maybe she'd
just opted to strike out on her
own one day. She was part
shepherd, part Alata, part
whatever -a dog with an
uncertain identity and a hazy
past.
And all ours.
For two days, she sat m the
backyard, hunched over
under a leaky faucet: Jetting
the water drip on her head.
"Maybe she's retarded,~
my wife ventured.
I said that was a pretty
good bet.
She slowly emerged from
her shell, but her institutional
past was never far off. She
cowered when you pet her.
She ran away when you
offered food. She t\.Jcked her
tail between her legs and

This Is good news for pro-
ponents of the new resort
hotel, who. have endured
countless community meet-
ings tor more than a year
and a half m an attempt to
gain their neighbors' sup-
port.1
The Dunes project propos-
es a 400-room, 100-unit time-
share resort with 55,000
square feet C>f conference
space. It is estimated that the
hotel would generate $1.3
·million a year to the city. If
approved, the resort would be
built within the next five
years.
The compromise between
the parties was twofold. The
first is the construction of a
gatehouse on Bayside Drive
in front of the existing
entrance to the commuruty,
which currently has no stop
sigri or traffic signal The idea
is that as vehicles entering
the hotel stop at the gate-
house, it will be easier for
motorists and pedestrians to
cross Bayside Drive. The
gatehouse would be moni-
tored 24 hours a day by
Dunes staff.
The other revision would
be to move the proposed
sound wall -planned to be
erected between the new
resort ti.nd the mobilP. home
community -back 30 feet
toward the Dunes. Project
proponents also suggested
add.mg a 15-foot landscaped
bulfer and pushing back
some of the proposed build-
ings hve to 15 feet. 1t is hoped
this will enhance Baystde Vil-
lage's privacy.
"!,Jn sure we'll still h'cive

I think we've met the con-
cerns of the ma1onty," sc1.ld

concerns about the proposed
resort, particularly traffic
issues.

CORONA DEL MAR -Corona del
Mar High girls soccer player Allison Har-
vey definitely has a strong bead on her
shoulders.
Despite blows to the cranium from a
University opponent and the Trojans' goal
post, Harvey managed to score both of the
Sea Kings' goals in Tuesday's 2-0 Pacific
Coast League home win.
• I tell you what, I wouldn't want to be
the one that has to defend her,• Coach
Ron Evans said about his sophomore
sruper. " Allison is just a total all-.around
player, who is dangerous around the net."
Corona del Mar (10-5-2, 3-0-0 in
league}, ranked No. 2 m CIF Southern
Section p1vision IV, got its offense going
right from the opening whisUe, but Uni-
versity goalkeeper Nicole Williams made
several outstanding point-blank saves to
keep the game scoreless.
" We've been able to get some oppor-
tunities to score in the past few games,
but we haven't been aQle to ~ them
in,• Evans said. " That's something we're
gonna need to do down the ~tre_tch. ~
Off a throw-in deep near University's
goal, CdM senior Ka~e Simon sent the ball
off a strong head pass to Harvey, who
slipped the ball past Williams in the 12th
minute, giving the Sea Kings an early 1-0
lead.
CdM's defense was just as strong, not
allowing the Trojans many scoring oppor-
tunities.
Junior goalkeeper Britta Vogele had
five saves for CdM.
• She's been real strong as of late,•
Evans said. • She didn't have too many
tough saves, but she stepped up when.
she had to.• ·
Both teams struggled offensively to
open the second half before CdM turned
up the pressure.
Freshman Olivia Mazura, who applied
constant pressure throughout the game,
sent a pass to senior Julia Livingston, who
then fed Harvey.
Harvey headed the cross-held pass
over the. outstretcrhed fingers of Williams, •
into the goal at the 65th minute, stretch-
ing the lead to 2--0. She now has 12 goals
for the season.
From there, CdM clamped down on
the 'nojans, not allowiilg a single shot the
final 10 minutes of the game.
" we·~ really been working on limit-
ing our opponents' opporturutle5, • Evans
said. " Really wanted to play a full 80 min-
utes and I think we did a good job of
that.•

• At less than full strength, Sea
Kings' defense gets the job done.
NEWPORT BEACH -Llneups may
change and offensive fluidity may be
fleeting. But Corona del Mar High girls
basketball coach Elbert Davis knows he
can always count on his team's defense.
Such was the case in Tuesday's 47-39
Pacific Coast League win over visiting ·
University, in which the Sea Kings (15-
4, 3-0 in league) forced 25 turnovers to
set up Thursdays showdown of PCL
upbeatens at league-leading Costa
Mesa.
With its top three scorers on the
bench at the outset, serving punishment
for missing practices, and another
starter sidelined until an eligibility issue
could be cleared up, the Sea Kings were
often forced to improvise offensively.
"We didn't have tht: type of fluid
motion we normally do,• Davis said. •,Jt

Fortunately for the hosts, the ball fre-

Coach Bob Bernal said.
Kawata's_ season-high 12 points led
the winners, who shot better from three-

"We've never had seven three-point-

· Gruber, a sophomore guard who nor-
mally comes off the bench, spearheaded
Cd.M's full-court pressure. Si1e finished

Cabico _returning
to Costa Mesa .
• He's returning after one semester at Mater Dei.
•
BARRY PAUl...KNER
Dltf "".
COSTA. MESA -Nick
Cabico, who played three
varsity sports as a Costa
Mesa Higb freshman last
year, before transferring to
Mater Dei, said he plans to
return to the Mustangs Jan.
3-1.
The 5-foot-8, ll.5-pound
sophomore, who started at
tailback and outside line-
backer for Mater Dei's Serra
League champion sopho-
more football team; said he
will finish out the fall semes-
ter, whiCh ends Jan. 28, at
the Santa Ana parochial
school. He then plans to
begin classes at Mesa Jan.
31 .
Cabico, believed to be
the first Mustang freshman
to play varsity football, bas·
ketball and baseball, said
the financia'l commitment
required for his older broth-
er Jason to attend Brown
University next fall, made
paying tuition at Mater Dei
problematic.
"I'm going to see a lot of
my old friends," said Cabi-
co, who will also reunite
with baseball teammates as
the Mustangs' No. 1 starting
pitcher. ·
A former Llttle League
legend, Cabico opened on
the junior varsity last spring;
but emerged as the No. 2
varsity starting pitcher,
behind senior All-CIF stand-
out Ruben Mancilla.
Cabico threw a complete-
game seven-hitter in the
Mustangs' 5· 1 victory over
Duarte in the first round of
the CIP Southern Section
Division IV playoffs last sea-
son. It was the Mustangs'
first playoff win sIDce 1962.
Cabico, a right-han~er,
also started_ the CIF quarter-
final loss to Bl Segundo. He
finished 3-5 with a 4.93 ERA
and 43 strikeouts in 54 varsi-
ty innings.
"We have a No. 1 pitcher,
now,• baseball coach Kirk
Bauermeister said. "We had
a lot of question marks
before. And he can do a lot
of things. He'll probably be
our leadoff hitter.•
Cabico starred on the
Mesa freshmen football team
and was called up to the var-
sity for its CIP Dmsion VI
playoff loss to Irvine in '98. He
carried seven times for 26
yards in his only varsity
appearartce and was expect-
ed to be a focal point of Coach
Jerry Howell's offense, before
becoming a Monar~.
He stood out on the Mon-
archs' 8-1-1 sophomore
squad and Joined the varsity
for Mater Dei's four-game
run to the CIF Division I
crown last fall. He played in
the first-round playoff victo-
ry over Redlands.
"He can play running
back, wide receiver, even
quarterback,• Howell said.
"And, defensively, we'll look
at him at safety and comer-
back. "He's a kid who can
help us on both sides of the
ball.•
Cabico scored 39 points
in 15 games with Mesa's
varsity baU.etball team as a
freshman. He did not play
basketball at Mater Dei.
He is currently working
out with Mater Dei's junior
varsity baseball team.
