BETWEEN THE UNES
Riding high
horses to
defeat racism
W e have a problem,
folks. In recent
weeks. a whole
herd of people have been
galloping around Costa
Mesa on tugh horses tossing
around the dogeared card of
racism And I'm bothered by
1t. Not because I'm a closet
Aryan secretly goose-step-
ping around the house m
Jackboots. I abhor the igno-
rance and fanat1rum that
fuels the hdtred of any peo-
ple, whatever the stripe of
theu ethruc1ty.
But I hold IIl equal low

that seeks
to make the
battle
against
racism an
industry,
particularly
when 1t is
h ypocri tic al
rhetonc.
Too many
or us lob
the incen-
cllaries or
bigotry and
racism into
issues
where they
do not exist
and do not belong.
Nevertheless, smce the
election of Chris Steel to the
Costa Mesa City Counal by
more than 101} .. of our popu-
lation. the all' or debate in
this town has been positively
abuzz with nghteous incllg-
nation. The cancer of racism
is creeping through~ut Costa
Mesa. the prevailing head-
line seems to read. And yau
don't have to scan between
the lines too closely to see
the city's tugh horsemen are
accusing Steel and his policy
positions of leading the
charge as iI he and they '
were the Nazis marching
down the Champs-Elysees.
Yet. 1s anyone really lis-
tening to what he is saying?
Or does he merely make
convenient fodder for an
anti-raost cottage industry?
The most recent case in
point rises from the smolder-
ing debate over citizenship
requirements for appointees
to city commissions and com -
mittees. Following the sug-
gestion of the ever-outspo-
k en Martin Mal.la.rd, Steel
asked City Atty. Jerry Scheer
to check or:r the legality of
screening col1UiliSsion and
committee appointees for
U.S. citizenship. And in rode
the racism police.

Her work with VisiorlS has helped
Betton discover a political side to her-

Congress as the representative of the
Natural Law Party. She collected
about 3,000 votes, losing to incurn-

Her political activism stems from
her belief that prisoners should be
rehabilitated not just locked up. she

Greenlight guidelines
• Newport Beach council
postpones decision on

DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT BEACI I -The
mechanics of Green.light remain
uncertain after City Council mem-
bers spent Tuesday altemoon dis·
cussing possible gwdelmes for the
slow-growth initiative.
Approved by voters in Novem-
ber, the new law reqwres otywide
elections on any general plan
amendment for a project that adds
more than 100 peak-hour car tnps
or dwelling uruts, or 40,000 square
feet more than the plan allows
..
otywide vote.
But Green.light's text. as ll
appeared on the ballot, staled that
general plan amendments ·adopt-
ed within the preceding 10 ye¥8"
should count.
During Tuesday's discussions,
Councilmen John Heffernan and
Tod Ridgeway i;aid adopting 'a 2000
starting date would be akin to
ignoring the initiative.
•t think you're running counter
lo the text,· Heffernan said. "To
me, look back means look back.•
Councilman Steve Bromberg
voiced similar concerns at a previ-

Defense Attorney John Barnett
argued that New had a histo-
ry of seeking out men such as
Dennis Rodman -•bad boys•
who lived on the edge and
who had frequent encounters
with the law.
But Lloyd said Bechler had
murder in his mind months
before he planned the tragic
anniversary cruise. He even
mentioned a plan to stuff his
wife in a barrel and dump her
in the ocean to his best friend
Kobi Laker while relaxing on
the beach after playing vol-
leyb_all, Laker testified last
month.
•He told Kobi and Tami
Laker that Pegye was a bad
person,• Lloyd said. "He told
them she was obsessive, self-
ish, controlling and manipula-
tive, and they believed him.
They felt sorry for him.•
On the day of the trip, Lloyd
said, Bechler did everything to
relax his victim.
•He gave her margaritas to
drink,• she said. "They had
sex. She was sl~epy. She was
laying down on the deck in
the sun. She was unsuspect-
ing, trapped. And then, he
murders her and dumps her
lover) the side."
In his closing arguments,
Barnett asked the jury to look
al testimony by forensic
experts called to the stand by
the prosecution.
"They said the boat was not
wiped down,• he argued.
"They found stuff on th~ boat
that looked like blood but it
wasn't blood. There was no
blood on the boat."

is an after-schooJ hangout for
a number of Costa Mesa High
School students, who also
have mixed opinions about the
proposal.
·"Since there are already a
lot of homes here, I think we
need stores more than we
need more homes,• said
Patricia Hernandez, a 13-year-
old COS\4 Mesa High School
student wbo walks through
· the cent.er and sometimes buys
srtacks there on her way
home. "We use these stores.
There's also a clothes store
here, and people wlll have to
go to the mall if it doses down.
It's kind of quiet here. not
rushed like the mall, and I just
like it better. Alid it's much
boat, Barnett asked.
He said the story of Pegye
Bechler lying in a pool of blood
after being bit on the head was
part of Tina New's fantasy not
fact.
The reason, Lloyd told
jurors, was that Bechler took
his wife almost half way to
Catalina and not just four to
five miles off Newport Beach,
where rescuers found him
paddling on his bodyboard,
distraught and screaming for
help.
Lloyd called it all a "fake
show,• saying that in none of
the tapes jurors saw or heard
was Bechler seen actually
shedding tears.
"He could not conjure up
tears because he could not con-
jure up the pain,• she said. "It's
hard to make tears when you
don't have them.·
Barnett argued that it is
incorrect to use emotion as a
yardstick to measure guilt in a
murder trial.
"There is no barometer for
.
"}
closer th.an anything else.·
Beth Magnusen, a 13-year-
old who ate at Super Star Burg~rs Tuesday, said she is
looking forward to the change.
· "My parents say this is
bringing down the value of
our house, so if we want to sell
it in the future, it will be worth
less,• she said. "It makes the
area look really trashy, so I'm
glad it's golng to change to
housing.•
Other residents, such as
those who live in·the nearby
apartments 'and those who
don't have cars, say they rely
on the laundermat and supj?I~
market that are within walk-
ing distance.
·we like the shops,• Lele
Kibin said. ·we will need to go
far away to do our laundry.
•And, basically. we will
miss the bar.· he said, laugh-
ing.
Merchants could be the
emotion and grieving,· he said.
Barnett said the prosecution
could twist anything Bechler
did or said to make him look
guilty.
Responding to Lloyd's state-
ment that Bechler was putting
on a fake show in front of offi-
cials, Barnett said Bechler
would have done better if he
wanted to "create an appear-
ance."
• U he were worrieQ about
creating an appearance. do
you think he'd fttll asleep when
people are out looking for his
wife?" he asked the jury.
"Don't you think he'd ask to
stay and look WI the last dog
comes home?"
Barnett said the deputy
sheriff who rescued Bechler
wrote in her report that day
that Bechler was •dazed. dis·
traught, • that he hoped she
swam ashore and that he
wanted to stay back and look
for her.
But Lloyd said Bechler was
lying when he told police, and

Antunes said it took him
more than two years to bUnd a
solid-enough customer base

difficult to reinvest and start all

"The city has to understand
that,• he said. "I'm going to

COSTA.MESA -Another Costa
Mesa High-Corona del Mar matcbup,
another girls soccer classic.
Perhaps it is fitting that the
Mustangs and Sea Kings ended their
contest in a 1-1 tie Tuesday at Mesa
in a battle for first place in the Pad.fie
Coast League.
Last year, CdM (18-1-3, 4-0-1 in
leagueTtOOk the first of two games
. with a 1-0 victory by virtue of Molly
O 'Me ara's goal with less than a
. • minute remaining. The second game
ended in a ICOl'81en tie at CdM.
~e 2001 matchup provided
enough tbrlDa and spills for an Amoki
Schwan.enegger film and equaled its
drama u it featured CdM, ranked
No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Divillon
IV, and the Mustangs (11-3-3, 3-0-1 in
league), No. 5 in Division IV.
Mesa sophomore Sharon Day
scored her 20th goal of the season, a
school single-season record, when
she converted on a penalty kick in the
42nd minute.
CdM, however, knotted the game
when Jaycee Ma.hler finished a 1>"5S
frotn Natalia Dorfman with 11 min-
utes remaining. The tie ended CdM's
11-game winning streak, but the Sea
Kings are unbeaten in 18 games.
"This team has arrived,• Coach
·t11u SOCCll
Dan Jobmton said of bis Mustangs.
•They haw cooftdence in tbamelvel.
And, they play IO well together.•
After a scoreless first half, Mesa
began the second with vigor. The
Mustangs stormed their way to a cor-
ner kick in the opening minute and
Mesa sophomore Emily Abbott drew
a penalty.
The ensuing penalty kick dis-
played what might be the PCL's two
best playen at their respective posi-
tions, Day vs. Britta Vogele. Day won
this round, but Vogele stopped her
cold three times in the first half and
the CdM senior bound for Univenitf
of Iowa finished with nine saves.
•(Vogele) ls u good as they get,•
Johnston Nld. •she was smart. too.
She came out on balls that a lot of
goalies would not come out on and
that made a huge dttference. •
The 1-0 advantage allowed the
Mustangs to control the tempo and
the Sea Kings. But, CdM shifted the
momentum in the final 15 minutes.
1n the 69th minute, Dorfman'I kick
spun toward Mahler, but Mesa goalie
Chelsea Sorta approached the ball.
Mahler beat everyone to the ball and
booted it into the back of the net.
Mahler's shot was the Sea Kings'
18th attempt as Soria, Katie Roche
and Devin Denman pestered CdM
with several defensive stops. Soria
finished with 11 saves. .

COSTA MESA -Ama.Zing what a trip to the wood-
shed can do to spark a girls basketball team. ·
Corona del Mar High, lethargk in the first half,
came out smoking in the second half, took control of
the game and hung on for dear life to win. 40-37, over
girls basketball host Costa Mesa Tuesday night.
•we just threw a monkey wrench in it,· CdM
Coad) Elbert Davis said a~ut the Pacific Coast
League standings. "We're gei?g to need some help
from other teams, but we're right in this thing again.•
•That help came by way of University. With the
1Tojans' 45-38 win over fust-place Estancia, the Sea
Kings (8-12, 3-2 in league) and Mustangs (12-9, 3-2)
are tied for third place, one. game behind the 'Ii"ojans.
and Eagles.
According to Davis, it was no more
Mr. Nice Guy for his players, follow-
ing the Sea Kings' lethargic perfor-
mance in the first half.
GIRLS
HOOPS Turnovers. wild shots and soft
;_ defense gave Davis the green light for
a flavorful discussion at balftime.
"I've been saving it all up until now,• Davis said.
"We are no longer going to tolefate a lack of effort
and execution on our part. It's so frustrating at times.
I told our team to get the ball down low to Kristin
(McCoy) and she will ~e control, either by scoring
or dishing it out to an open player. She did just that.•
McCoy did take control, scoring 15 of her 19
points in the second half. She also grabbed seven
rebounds to help give life to visitors.
Fortunately for the Sea Kings, despite their slop-
py play earJy, they were only down by one ,point to
the short-handed Mustangs after two quarters of
play.
Mesa was missing three players. including starter
Leigh Marshall, as a result of an altercation with
Laguna Beach Thursday. But l\itustangs' Coach Jim
Weeks wasn't about to use that as a crutch'.
"No excuses on our side," he said. "I'm pro~ With
the players we had out then~. They played lµlrd

shots." -
Rhondi Naff led the Mus'Ongs with 18 poin.ts, 10
in the fourth quarter, wbile f.Jancy Hatsusbi added
" seven points and nine assists. .
Mesa's cold shooting started early as Corona del
Mar jumped out to a 12-7 lead atu!r one quarter.
A Carrie Hawkins hoop pushed the lead to seven,
but from there, it was all Mustan~ in the second
quarter. Four points from Naff and baskets by Maria
Lazos and Christine Caron sparked an 8-0 run, giv-
ing Mesa a 15-14 halftime lead and sending Davis
to the locker room seething.
