Few sailboats vary from

are bold enough to splash

"Everybody said, "What

home.
The boat was made to
order for von Dyl, who spent
more than $30,000 to have it
built for speed. It is all fiber·
glass -state of the art for its
age.
He chose its bright color
and its name because he
liked "Wake of the Red
Witch," a 1949 movie star-
ring John Wayne.
After winning and placing
races up and down the caJi.
fomia coast, von Dyl, who
owned a real estate company
at the time, bad to sell the
boat in 1963 when business
started slowing.
It seemed that he got over
the loss of his beloved boat.
Business got better, he
bought other boats, kept rac-
mg and continued to love
sailing
His wile, Sally, said that
she considered the Red
Witch a mere possession at
the ~e: bought, sold, forgot-
ten.
· "When you sell some·
thing, you figure it's gone,"
he said. "You don't think
about it and what happened
to it. But I guess he did think
aboutit." ;
Von Dyl's eyes brightened
when he remembered the
times he'd had on the Red
Witch. One of his favorite sto-
ries is "The Big Crush of
1963," when 63 boats fin.
ished the Ensenada Race at
the same tiJ'ne. His red boat,
complete with a red and
white striped sail, was in the
middle of the line of winners.
The image of the Red
Witch stayed wedged in von
Dyl's mind. In 1991, he
instantly became nostalgic as
he perused a for-sale ad in a.
bOating publication.
The desmption reminded
him ol hl.s old boat -
designed with two masts, a
feature von Dyl h.imseU sug-
gested to the builders.
For old times' sake, von
Dyl drove down to San
Diego, and found a dingy,
brownish boat in a state of
disrepair. Disappointed, he
left for home. Somewhere,
halfway between San Diego
and Newport Beach, he had
a revelation.
"I was driving back to
Newport, and l realized,
'That's my boat,' • he said.
Stunned and overjoyed,
von Dyl knew he had to buy

the boat back and restore it to
its original condition. He re-
christened it the Red Witch D.
•stop and think. the boat
went around tfle world~ it
could have ended up any-
where," he said. "1bin.k of all
the odds of it coming togeth-
er. Maybe it was fate or kar·
ma."
During the separation,
van Dyl's boat apparently
bad made its way a.round the
world a couple of times, once
through the Panama Canal. It
bad been painted different
colors and called different
names. San Diego resident
Cecily Bailey, who was the
last owner be.fore the Red
Witch returned to von Dyl,
called it Infinity.
·1 am thrilled you pur-
chased her and (you are)
restoring her," Bailey wrote
tovonDylin 1992. "ltiswon-
derful to have her come com-
plete circle."
For ahnost 30 years, von
Dyl had kept a color photo-
graph of the Red Witch
tucked in his wallet. Now, he
doesn't need the pictw"e. H he
peeks over his bctlcony, he
can see the real Uung
berthed right outside his
home. He takes it out for a
sail every couple of weeks
and, if he lets himself, he
travels back 30 years.
In his heart, there is no dif.
ference.
"It looks the same and
sails as well as ever," von Dyl
said.

Clicbes and semantics .
I. f there's a clicbe we love
to toss around in the
newsroom it's the old one
about not killing the mes-
senger. Being the messen-
gers that we often are. it
seems an appropriate bit of
self-protection.
f.\nd the saying was espeo-
dally apropos last week as
many were ready to line us
up on the firing squad in
light of the controversies
we've tackled.
Take for instance our
reporting on the recent
statewide school Academic
Performance Index scores.
We. I belie"e rightly, pointed
out the dlfferences m rank-
ings between schools within
the Newport-Mesa Urufied
School District.
At one end of the spec-
trum was Andersen Elemen-
. tary in Corona del Mar with
a No. 1 in Orange County
ranking of 933. On the other
side was Costa Mesa's Wil-
son Elementary with a rank-
• ing of 443. Aie there differ-
ences between the two
schools demographically?
You bet. ·
Costa Mesa's schools
have large populations of
children who either don't
speak the English language,
or are in the process of .
learning it. That alone is a
difficult hurdle, and we 1iaid
as much in our first story
after the rankings were
released.
ln fact, we devoted an
entire series, •A tale of two
schools" that highlighted the
very topic a couple years
back.
Still, our first-day stor'y on
the ranking results pushed
one Newport-Mesa trustee
over the edge, prompting
the school board member to
call our education reporter
and growl, heatedly, to her
about the story.
The trustees' point? lf you
rank Wilson up with other
demographically similar, and
lower ranking. schools, you'll
. see that it's a better
matchup.
Well, maybe so. And to
ensure we we're being fair,
we reported that fact in our
coverage of the rankings Fri-
day.
But personally, I find that
attitude puzz.hng. We're not
talkmg about companng
schools in two different dis-
tricts, we'r 1alking about
two schools within the same
district in which a gulf of
nearly 500 points exists
between their respective
rankings.
The trustee, and others
who have complained about
our coverage. seem to imply
that it's fine to be at the low
end of the rankings, as long
as the school measures up in
that company. But that isn't
good enough for me, and I
bet it isn't good enough for
the parents at Wilson or oth-
er Costa Mesa schools.
Those schools deserve to
be pushed into the same
class as Andersen and Lin-
coln and other Newport
Beach elementary schools.
The issue of English limited
pupils is not a new one. So
it's time to put those old
excuses to rest and come up
with some UU1ovative pro-
grams to help those schools.
As school leaders love to say,.
• u·s what's best for the cbil-·

Now on to our Greenlight
critics. First on the list is the
leaders of the Bayside Vil-
lage mobile home park asso-
ciation. Those leaders
became incensed when we
reported the association,
which represents the park
homeowners, had seemingly
reversed its previous opposi-
tion to the Dunes hotel pro-
1ect, adjacent to the park.
The basis for our story
was a letter to the Newport
Beach Planning Com.mis-
sion, Stgned by the Bay Ide·
association leaders. The let-
ter thanked Dunes off1dal$
for promising to employ
rneaswe , one of whJcb ls
instal.Ung a guard shack at
the common entrance for the
Dunes and Bayside, that
would eose the burdens the
development would have on
the residents.

paragraph that swruned up
the ass6ciation's gratitude

Several planning comnus-

line writer and I all took that
to mean the Bayside com-
munity had.come to an ami-
cable agreement with the ·
Dunes, which wants to build
a hotel.
But several members of
the community were taken
aback by the news and rang
up association president Jo
Smallwood to protest. We
followed the next day with
that story. Now, Smallwood
insists the association never
"endorsed" the hotel project,
as our headline proclaimed.
In an e-mail she wrote to
me she says:
"We like the fact that the
Dunes has made an effort to
address our concerns regard-
mg the two modificab.ons to
the project; however,
because of the diversity of
opinions which exist in the

I'm not sure the leaders of

any other objective than to
keep Newport Beach pris-

that's not necessarily a bad
thing, but development

Still, we promise to be a
little more judicious in bow
we describe the initiative,
but make no mistake, the
movement is populated by a
respected old guard of

Newport Beach free from

The spra\Vling one-story

weathered the storms,
soaked in the sun and shel-

Now the structure is getting
its own tender, loving care.
It is one of eight buildmgs

"We have to make sure

his crew will spend close to
three months on each build-

beams along their exteriors
as well as putting relllforce-

must also make the struc-
tures compliant with the

El Toro environmental report reaches cyberspace

The lnternet is full of infor-

county's environmental

A Web site dedicated to
blocking the county's effort to
buj]d a sec:ond airport at the ·
dosed El Toro military base
this week began offering the
first couple hundred pages of

So far, web sw1ers can read
the first three of the report's 39
volumes. More pages a.1e

Ellis' organization, the Air·

er like it have argued that
building an airport at the
4,700-acre former Marine
base is ,the only way to pre-
venting expansion at the 500-
acre John Wayne Airport.
County officials have said
the $2.9 billion project is nec-
essary because of the increas-
ing demand for air travel.
The county's Web site,
www.eJtorofoctB.org, contains
a summary of the environ-
mental report.
There is no restriction
against pnvate groups post-

John Christensen, a county
spokesman. He said, howev-
er, if anyone attempts to put
the graphics online. they will
likely cause computers to
crash.
The report, with more than
10,000 pages, includes about
3,000 graphics -mostly
technical information .
"There is no sense in
putting something online U
people aren't going to be able
to read 1t," Christensen said.
"You need to have the whole
package to understand it ir\
its .entirety. That's why we put
a copy in every oty, county
and university library."
Kranser agreed that the
graphics would be difficult to
post and would probably be
left oU the Web site.
"It's not easy reading, but
it's the best we can do,•
Kranser said. •And it's better
than what the county's
doing." (

As a seruor, Kroescb mented
