In the r estless quiet that envelopes the Newport Beach Central Library, there is bad blood flowing. Yep. Now there's the chil· dren's section and, U you'll ... "What's that. Joey? Oh yeah, those are the adminis- trative offices. Lot of impor- tant people back there. Any- way, back to the .•. "The noise? What's the noise? Well Joey, that would be the Ubrary Boa.rd of nustees at work. "What are they doing? Well son. there doing what they always do. They're fighting.• Yes, they're fighting. ln the restless quiet that envelopes the Newport Beach Central Ubrary, there is bad blood flowing. The two citizens groups charged with nursing and caring rot the library -the Newport Beach Ubrary Foundation and the board of trustees -have pushed aside their manners and their better Judgment in favor of a good old-fashioned brouha- ha. The foundation is the group that helps raise money for the library. The trustees are in the business of spend- ing that money. All in all, the people on these two boards are sterling citizens -the refined, the cultured, the sort of people you'd imagine would enjoy spending an afternoon SEE MARBLE PAGE 4 , • Idea was pursued as a way to mend what some see as a rift between Newport-Mesa school board and the public. That way, she didn't grow upset.• through positive interaction and feed- back with patients. Facilitators use bio- graphical facts to stir emotions in patients, who then create an image on canvas. Facilitators may also use the power of smell to spark a memory by spraying florals or spices near a partic- ipant. Jenny and a handful of others are crectited with the formation of the Alzheimer's Association Orange Coun- ty Chapter. Greg R,lsllng DAILY PILOT NEWPORT BEACH A 39-year-old Costa Mesa man who ran a popular hair salon pleaded guilty recenUy to charges he fon- dled one of tus female cus- tomers during a massage. Robert Keith Cryan was sentenced last month to three months m county jail and three years of proba- tion for sexual battery and failure to obtain a massage license. Cryan must also register as a sex offender under stale law. Cryan owned the NYC Salon on Harbor Boule- vard, where he was arrest- ed last August when a 22- year-old woman said Cryan inappropriately touched her after she received a haircut. Cryan offered coupons to his mostly female clien- tele that allowed hun to massage them. The victim gave Cryan the coupon and the two went into a back room where the cnme occurred. The womdn was shaken enough that she wrote a letter to the court express- ing her dismay over Cryan's actions. MWhen I think of what he tlld, it makes me sick to my stomach," the woman wrote. "The embarrass- ment I've .experienced is nothing compared to the hurt I felt. He.has gotten away with this before and he planned to do it ag~in." The woman may have learned about other possi- ble victims alter Cryan's , arrest. Prosecutors were ready to call several women at trial who allegedly had similar prob-1, lems With Cryan. Howev- er, prosecutors didn't file the charges because Cryan was usually alone with one woman, making it difficult to gain a convic- tion. ·we were concerned there were other victims," said Costa Mesa police Lt. Ron Smith. •But when there is smoke, there is , usually a fire. We hope tlus stops him from ev~r vic- timizing . other women again." Last month, Cryan sold his business to a riew own- er, who reopened the salon last week under a new name -Millenni Cuts. The new owner, who asked to remain anony- mous, said Cryan gave tus reasons for selling his business. "He said he was gomg back to the Ahny," she said. "He said it was only going to be for a few months, but I believed hlm. I had no ided he was going to jail." Despite the convict.Jon, Cryan was also known for organizing a fund-raising drive last May to assist the families of the children who were killed and in1ured at Southcoast Early Childhood Learning Cen- ter.
