stand the concerns over splitting an area that has

patrol, we were housed in
tiny construction trailers for
two years. After that experi-
ence, this place is like the

member of lhe special warfare com-
mand reserves m Sdll Diego. Four
years later, he switched to skippenng
pnvate yachts, bnngmg his bosses to
Alaska. HawdU, Asia, Europe dlld lhe
Canbbean.
"It took me everywhere.~ West, 43,
said. "The best ti.mes of my We.·
But about 11 years ago, lhe skipper
felt it was time to settle down. His years
out at sea made lum feel W<e lhe cap-
t.am of the Love Boat, West said.
·Just like anything, 1l wears on you
after a while, because you're gone
most of the tune," said lhe owne r of
naut-a-care in Newport Beach. ·1 like
Disneyland, but I don't want to go
there every day.•
Falling in love with the bo.ss' daugh·
ter on the last yacht he skippered final·
ly convinced him to call it quits.
"I'm a family-oriented guy." said
West, adding that his wile, Dina, just
gave birth to their daughter, Kelsey,
three weeks ago. "I love my wile:
Getting back on land, West briefly
tried lus luck in construction business.
"That was not for me," he said. "I'm
a true blue mariner. That's what I am.·
Together with lus father, Hany, a
retired Navy captain, West set up a
company that steam cleans bilges and
takes care of boat oil changes.
Wilh about six employees, naut-a·

Newport Beach to Los Ang~es. One of

with a cockpit house and cleaning
machinery taking up ·most of the deck
-now docks off West Coast Highway
opposite the big yachts he used to drive.
When he first started the business, "I
went by my friends at the Balboa Bay
Club," West said. "They laughed [at
the boat] and said, 'Hey, what's Danny
West doing?'•
"Now lhey all use me and wish lhey
had my business,• the Hl!-lllington
Beach resident said, sitting in his one-
room office, where pictures of the
yachts he skippered hang on the wall.
West sees his new job as a way to do
his part in protecting local waters.
U it weren't for him, about 1,500 gal-
lons of polluted water would get
dumped out at sea month after month,
he said. By sucking the oily residue out
of bilges and providing no-discharge oil
changes, his crews help to keep dirt out
of the water, West said.
Protecting the marine environment
still leaves time to dream about waters
far away. West said that he's currently
studying for bis third-mate marine
license, which would allow him to drive
even the largest of ships. So far he's lim-
ited to 1,600 toris.

out.• Harry West said, jumping into the
conve~tion from ~~Jt_in the comer
of the office.
Dan West, who mentioned that his
wile doesn't mind hiPl going on the
occasional trip, said he just wanted to
prepare fop eventualities.
"I like to keep up with speed on
everything,• he said. "You just never
know if you might be called to duty. I'm
still playing the game. I love navigation.

located next door to the Bal-
boa Yacht Club on Bayside
Drive, is equipped with a
variety of upgrades com-
pared to the former struc-
ture, which was razed
approximately two years
ago.
The facility has a large
open room named the "Har-
bor Community Room,• and
is available to organizations
for education seminars,
meetings and other events
open to the public. The room
can seat up to 100 people in
a classroom setting and is
equipped with video, com-
puter and projection
capabilities.

Girl Scouts, Indian Guides
and Indian Pnncesses and
other groups.

an elite ranking
A Newport Beach
preschool is among a small
number of preschools in the
country to earn accreditation
by the National Msn. for the
Education of Young Children.
Newport Coast Child
Development Preschool,
which serves 300 children
ages 2 112 to 51 now displays
a torch symbol signifying th.at
it was recently granted the
prestigious accreditation.
As of October, only 7 % of
preschool programs nation-
wide have earned the honor
of displaying that symbol,
said the school's director, Sara
Guggenheim Kwnmerfeldt.
Programs seeking this
accreditation undergo a rigor-
ous, voluntary process of self-
study and reporting followed
by a site visit. ·
The accreditation is valid
for three years.

The Newport Beach Public
Library and Oasis Senior
Center are looking for seniors
interested in talking about
books with teenagers.

Adults Reading Together -is
a six-week intergenerational
reading program sponsored
by the California Center for
the Book, a federally-funded
program.

meeting at 2 p.m. Feb. 7 at

Water district
to flush its pipes
Mesa Consolidated Water
District today will begin
flushing water mains and fire
hydrants north of the San
Diego Freeway, south of Bak-
er Street, east of Fairview
Avenue and west of Harbor
Boulevard.
The flushing, which
removes normal sediment
buildup -including rust
deposits and sand -from
the pipes, will continue for
two weeks.

championships from 1966 to
1988, a record for the oldest golf
dub in Orange County.
In 20 appearances, Selman
won almost half the time when
teeing it up in the club
championsJups.
But, from 1981 to '84 when
match play decided the dub
titles, Selman lost three tunes in
·the semifinals in rivebng

on the last hole of regulation.

hole, 22nd hole and 18th hole,

in Orange County for selling

At age 30 in 1969, Selman

college players. At the time,
the tournament was widely
considered an Orange "'County
championship with top amateurs
coming frQm all over the
Southland.
In 1970, Selman qualified for
the Los Angeles Open, the PGA.
Tour atop at Rancho Park, but
missed the cut by two strokes.
"Back then, they used to have
an amateur qualifying for the
(LA) Open,• Selman sald.
"There were 140 scratch goUers
going for five places:
Selman won his third Santa
stroke play.
Selman was four shots behind
with 12 Mies to play, then
caught leader Chris Veitch, only
to lose on the last hole. ·u l'd won in 199-4 -and I
really wanted to win -I would've
won (a club championship) in
