After much thought about
a fitting tribute to Dee's

With ·a cruise ship for a class-

from Costa Mesa to the South Pqle.
The Orange Coast College pro-

South America to Antarcti_ca in
January. The students earned four
units of credit for the class on
Antarctica and the hole ·in the
ozone layer.
The ozone is an atmospheric
layer that absorbs dangerous ultra-
violet radiation and also helps
maintain the earth's temperaWre.
The ultraviolet rays, which come in
three types, can cause skin cancer.
Scientists have noticed that the
ozone hole is growing larger, but
do not know exactly what it could
mean for the earth.
Kelly said it is important to
study the effects of the ozone hole
in Antarctica's marine environ -

humpback whales and seaweed. ,.

When do I have to st•rt paying dally overtime?
AB 60 (Knox) went into effect January 1 . The new overtime
rules apply to any hours worked beginning January 1.
All my employees are paid a ••l•ry. Are they
exempt from AB 60 and overtlme7
No. The fact that employees receive a "salary" as opposed
to an hourly rate of pay does not automallciilly exempt them
from overtime requirements. Exempt employees are those
whose monthly salary is at least S 1, 993 33 and who meet one
of the three exemptions: executive and managerial,
administrative or professional. Each of the three exemptions
has specific requirements that employees must meet in order
to be exempt.
My employee~ previously were exempt from the

Most previous exemptions .contained in the wage orders are
still valid. The following are some exceptions: On-site
construction, on-siteprilling, logging and mining.
These exceptions no longer exist as of January 1 and
employees in those Industries fall under the new daily
overtime requirements. The agricultural exemption foe.md in
Wage Order 14 still is valid. Truck drivers whose hours of
service are regulated by the U.S. Department of
Transportation, the CA Highway Patrol or the PUC continue to
be exempt from overtime.

: .. who told me the riddle was so
easy lt was dumb. And don't
: think I'll forget that.
Speaking of rl4dles and
"final answers," what about
these new game shows? Geez
Louise.
#Who Wants to Be a Mil-
lionaire?" and "1\venty-One"
have become what ls known
in the vid biz as "monsters.•
Almost overnight, the two
shows are racking up audi·
ence nwnbers usuaµy
reserved for the Oscars and
major sporting events. Inter-
esting, no?
Game sh ows have been a
staple of commercial televi-
sion since it began more than
50 years ago. They are alive
and well today. "The Price is
Right." M Jeopardy," "Wheel of
Fortune,• et al, and they will
always be with us.
So why the big buzz about
these two new shows? It's cer·
tainly not the hosts, both of
whom are household names.
Regis Philbin is very enter-
taining on "Millionaire.· And
MlWenty-One's" Maury
Povich is pleasant enough.
And it's definitely n ot the
content. Most of the questions
are pretty routine. The real
answer is that these aren't just
any game shows. Big money
game sh ows can ignite a
firestonn because they plug
into a universal fantasy .._ the
same compelling attraction,
however foolish,·that drives
the J..ottery: "If only I could tut
the big one I"
WllUling a dishwasher or a :t trip to whereveris fine, but
what these shows offer is a
whole new life. We all know
that's nonsense, of course, but
it's fun to pretend.
There's another twist to
these things, however, which
is particularly interesting to
aging, couch-ridden television
junkies like myself.
They are revivals of a spe·
cific type of game show that
ruled -the airwaves in the mid-
50s, then disappeared in 1959
as abruptly as the dinosaurs
-the "Big Money" game
show.
To SO-and-ups like me,
there is a very familiar nng to
these things.
Four •Big Money" shows
took Amertca by stdrm in the
1950s: "The $64,000 Ques-
. tion • and a spinoff called
"The $64,000 Challenge;"
•The St00,000 Big Surprise,"
emceed bY. a young man
named Mike Wallace; and
"1\venty-One," of which the
current incarnation is an exact
replica -isolation booths and
all.
•• Keep ln mind, these shows
were throwing around huge
dollar amounts for the 1950s.
A luxury car cost about $6,000
and $25,000 was an outra-
geous sum to spend on a
house.
AudJences loved the shows
and sponsors loved the size of
the aucftences. The big win-
ners, and big losers, became
national celebrities. It was
near-rapture for all, until a lit-
Ue man with big glasses
named He rbert Stempel
showed up.
Stempel had been a con-
testant on •1\venty-One." His
name may not rtng a bell. but
the name or the man who top-
pled him from the top slot on
"1Wenty-0ne• rings a Chi-
nese gong with a sledgeham-
mer for people my age:
Charles Van Doren.
ln 1958, Stempel went
public with a detailed acco\Ult
of how winners, and losers.
. . . .
had not only been given the
questions and ·answers in
advance, but had been care·
f\llly rehearsed in how to ago-
nize over their ~ers.
Ouch. Before long, Stempel
was warbling like Marlo Lan-
za to the New York district
attorney, a grand jury and,
finally, a Congressional
inquiry.
By the time it was over,
careers and lives were
destroyed, with indictments,
prison tenns and at least one
suicide.
MLet's see, I'll take 'Get Me
Out of Herel' for two hundred,
Bob."
, If Charles Van Doren was
ethically challenged, he was
also one of the best actors in
the history of television. Hip-
pos deliver babies with less
effort than he gave answers.
He mumbled and grimaced
and beaded sweat like a light
rain on Turtle Wax.
By 1959, big money game
shows bad vanished. Stan-
dards like ·rve Got a Seqet, •
•What's My Line?,• •Name
that Tune,• and •To Tell the
'Iluth, • would go on for years
and years, but the big money
shows were no more -until,
that is, this very year.
So for TV junkies like me,
when it comes to the new
•iwenty-One• and •Million-
aire,• it's deja vu all over
again -to borrow a line from
Yogi Berra. ,
The bells and whistles are
far more high-tech, as one
would expect. but the look
and feel are very familiar. The
questions have been dumbed
down considerably, but that's
as much a reflection of the
times as the shows.
Being a fountainhead of
utterly useless information, I
can't tell you how many peo-
ple have urged me over the
years to try my hand at a
game show.
But knowing a little about
how television works, I try to
caution others, and myself,
about being a little too smug.
Knowing which ocean
thing is a fish and which is a
mammal may be easy from
the wann nest of your recliner.
But once you 're trapped in a
strange environment, under
glaring lights with 40 or 50
roilllon people watching, it's
amazing bow quickly you can
forget what kind of car you
drive.
Game shows are a test of
nerves, not knowledge. So the
next time you see someone
blow this question -"Which
of the following was a U.S.
president: Steven 'I'f ler, John
'I'fler, Mary 'I'fler Moore or
Liv 'I'fler?• -go easy on
them.
And please. don't send me
the right answer.
I gotta go.

Estancia jumps into the
title race after handing
Sea Kings first PGL loss.
Barry Faulkner
DAILY PILOT
COSTA MESA -The
Estancia High girls basketball
team handed visiting Corona
del Mar its tust Pacific Coast
League defeat Thursday
night. Even more impressive,
the Eagles beat the Sea Kings
at their own game.
"We got caught up in their
(up-tempo, pressing) style,"
Estancia Coach Paul Kirby
admitted after the 61-48 ver-
dict, which propelled the
E(lgles (14-9, 4..-2) into the
thick of the PCL title race.
CdM (19-5, 5-1 and
ranked No. Tin C1F Southern
Sectio~ ill-AA), could have
clinched at least a share of its
first league crown in more
recent memory with a· win.
Instead, Coach Elbert Davis'
squad must at least split next
week against University and
Costa Mesa to retain a piece
of the crown. A sweep would
give them the outright cham-
pionship.
Estancia, which has won
five straight, plays its final
league game Thursday at
home against Uni.
"We need to take care of
business against Uni and
hope Costa Mesa can beat
Corona to force a three-way
tie for first,• Kirby said.
The Eagles took care of
business Thursday by han-
dling Cd.M's full-.court pres-
sure much better than in a 55-
32 first-round loss at CdM
Jan. 13.
·we took better care of the
ball and we attacked their
press,• Kirby said.
The Eagles still committed
26 turnovers -nine each in
the first and fourth quarters.
But they earned some easy
baskets after breaking the
press, connected on 6 of 15
from three-point range and
shot better than 50% over
three quarters to prevail.
Estancia junior Zuyin Bar·
rera, quietly becomihg one of
the league's most prolific
scorers, got three of her four
three-pointers before half-
time and finished with a
c:areer-higb 24 points. She
shot 50% from threedom and
hit 9 of 17 field-goal attempts.

Senior captain Lauren
Cassity was typically ubiqui-
tous for the winners, collect-
ing 11 points, six assists, five
rebounds and three steals.
And sophomore Erika
Avalos, a 5-foot-10 center,
amassed 1B rebounds to go
with her nine points.
"(Avalos) was a monster
on the boards tonight,# saia
Kirby, who saved praise for
the rest of his players.
"This was a good team
win," Kirby said. "We shared
the ball and we had a couple
people shoot well. Lisa Hira-
ta (nine rebounds) hit a big
three for us and so did Becky
Lenhart.
The aforementioned three-
pointers were part of three
straight three balls for the
hosts, ·during a 13-0 run to
close the half, The blitz
turned a 30-23 deficit into a
36-30 lead at the break.
It was a game of runs in
the first half, as Cd.M· had
separate spurts of 8-0 and 9-0
to maintain an advantage.
Estancia managed a 9-1
run in the first quarter, which
ended 19 all. The Eagles also
scored the first three points
after halftime to make it 16
straight tallies.
Cd.M, which shot just
19.4 % from the field in the
second half (7 for 36) and just
less than 30% for the game,
never recovered.
Freshman Jackie McCoy
came oU the bench to hit 1 of
12 field-goal tries to lead the
visitors with 14 points.
