Nearly three years have

Bechlers were celebrating

For the past three

Most have declined to have

The class teaches seamanship,

Shortboards became popu-

The longboards are ideal
for beginners, said ltent Arm·

at Becker's Surfboards, a

longboards are the specialty.
The length makes it easier
to catch a wave, Armstrong
explained. Many surfers also
like the laid-back attitude
associated with the longboard.
"It's low-key, Waikiki,• said
Armstrong, who actually
favors surfing on a shortboard.
Armstrong admitted,
though, there is a bit of rivalry
between the two camps.
Shortboarders are stereo-
typed as young punks who
might steal another surfer's
wave. Longboarders are often
thought of as slow and in the
way of speedier surfers.

We were left frozen in our tracks about news tip
W e get lots of news

OlJ! loyal readers.
Usually, we send out the
bloodhounds to pursue those
nuggets of news and often

But a news bp we received
at the top of the week left us
frozen in our tracks.
The tip, presumably sent
by an employee of the New-

at a local high school were
engaging in illegal gam-
bling.
The tipster sent off docu-

the names of some of the
culprits, namely the athletic
director, the reputed ring

Good stuff, right?
Well, yes and no. lt turns

Hmm. How can I put this•
lightly and avoid the possi-

see, there was no way I
could assign a reporter to
this story, or even an editor
to edit it. Because we at the
Daily Pilot were also guilty of
having an office football pool
for the Super Bowl.
And I think, it's safe to
ay, we were in good compa-
ny. Thousands upon thou-
sands of Super Bowl fans
and non-fans take part in
office pools each year. For
my money, I'd bet for the
most part they are a harm-
less exercise, but the truth be
known, the large-majonty of
them are illegal, albeit minor,
forms of gambling. Though,
my police reporter assures
me that he heard some offi-
cers even talking about pools
they were in.
So, alas, because of a
huge case of hypocrisy, this
is a news tip that will have
go the same route as the
Tennessee Titans, close, but
not quite enough.
Besides, I'd probably have
to give back the $50 my wife

The City Council is con-

resolution to adjust rates
and fees for City services
-including dog licenses,
use of City fields and cer-

for the fiscal year 1999-
2000. Some fees would go
up under the proposal,
while others would drop.
This measure was also
considered at the Jan. 17
meeting, but the debate
was continued because
Mayor Gary Monahan
wanted to discuss the fees
with the City's finance
department.
What to expect: The
council is now unified in
its support of the resolu-
tion, Monahan said, so
debate is unlikely to be
heated.

of the plan. "The only one

BALLPARK PROPOSAL
A plan to convert the

is up for approval.
The plan would see the
park, which currently fea-
tures two softball fields, a

into a four-field, softball-

What to expect: This
may be a provocative

sentimental value as a

port for the annexation of
the unincorporated area of
The Santa Ana Heights.
The resolution·would
not specify what city
should annex the area -
both Newport Beach and
Costa Mesa are possible
candidates -but would
simply encourage the
County to enter into dis-
cussions on the possibility
of annexation
If the Council goes
ahead with the plan, it will
request that the City of
Newport Beach file a simi-
lar resolution with the
County.
What to expect: The
question of annexation is
one that has many residents
concerned. Some in Santa
Ana Heights want the area
to be annexed by Newport
Beach, while others in Costa
Mesa feel that their city
would be the best fit.
On this issue, however,
both sides should be fairly
unified, because the reso-

possibility of annexation
and doesn't spell out who
should be involved in such
an arrangement.

before the t}vo were love-

Bechler was a good can-
didate for Pegye based on
her previous dating experi-
ence where many of the men ·
she dated were handsome,
outgoing and extremely fit.
The most noticeable differ-
ence was the nine-year age
gap between the two. Her
family joked that it would
take a younger man to keep
up with the overactive
Pegye. The age gap didn't
bother most of the couple's
fnends and family, but it
may have hung over the
relationship like a dark
cloud.
Pegye got the wedding
she dreamed about as a little
girl when she and Bechler
were married in a majestic
German castle in 199~. Only
a handful of people could
afford the European excur-
sion. For Pegye, it was a
reward of sorts after working
long hours to start her own
business. Now, not only did
she have a successful physi-
cal therapy company, she was
also married in her mid 30s
and was ready to start a fam-
ily.
For the five years they
were married, everything
seemed Wee Camelot. The
princess had found her
prince.
The couple moved from an
apartment on the Balboa
Peninsula into a home on
Cliff Driye. Pegye gave birth
to three healthy children -
two boys and a girl. The busi-
ness was thriving and both
were workmg in unison to
build clientele and revenue.
Some friends said the pair
was happily married -Bech-
ler was a doting father, while
Pegye was a caring mother
who was put in long hours at
work. But others said they
saw the strains of marnage
and work culminating in
heated arguments.

What may have hurt the

The ritzy and glamorous
lifestyle of Newport Beach
may have rubbed off on
them. Both of them came
from households where there
wasn't much money to go

farming to pay the bills. The
Bechler's were enamored
with living lavishly. Money
was an object to them.
They believed therr road
to fortune would be paved by
the sale of their business to a
health-care organization in
late 1996. The Bechlers
expected a windfall of money
from stock options and the
promise that they would be

Bechler's account was sus-

So many questions arose
after her disappearance. Was

Did Bechler do everything he

Was Pegye unconscious

they contend privately that
