DAILY PILOT
Early retirement didn"t do it for Wayne
Eggleston.
A former property manager, the 55-
year-old executive director of the Newport
Harbor Nautical Museum got busy when
City Council members in his hometown of
San Oemente proposed turning one of the
dty's historic buildings into a restaurant a few
years ago.
•Al that point, I went nuts,• Eggleston
said.
As a result, the avid traveler led a success-
ful campaign to tum "Casa Romantica" into a
cultural arts center. He also raised about
$3,000 and got himself elected as a San
Clemente councilman.
Having accomplished his mission at home,
the nautical museum's trustees lured him out
of his role as a volunteering retiree and con-
vinced him to come work for them in October
1999.
.
FYI
The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum
is open from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Tuesday
through Sunday. Admission Is free.
Information: (949) 673-7863.
The new job fit perfectly right from the
beginning. he said.
"Sometimes you come into a situation
where you instantly feel at home,• Eggleston
said, adding that he considered his current
position as his "fun job."
"The trustees are like friends," he said.
"Jbey're so supportive of things that.go on
here and put in volunteer hours. It's just
amazing."
Apart from nice bosses, other perks also'
come with the job.
"I have to look at this every day,· Eggle-
ston said, sitting down in his narrow office on
the second deck of the stea1h bOat, where the
museum has been since 1995. From his desk,
Eggleston looks out across Newport Harbor
through windows that cover the entire length
of the room.
"Isn't that awful?" he said and smiled.
Originally from Ohio -·1 grew up on a
chic.ken farm, and I still eat chic.ken, believe it
or not,· he said -Eggleston came to Califor-
nia and hasn't left.
Years ago, his old company wanted to
move him back to his native state.
•For a promotion,• Eggleston said and
rolled his eyes, making it dear that no job in
the world could force him away from the
Pad.fie Ocean.
At the museum, which has an annual
budget of about $500,000 and doesn't
charge admission, Eggleston's got enough
on his plate to keep him by the water for a
while.
He's planning to expand exhibitions in the
boat's grand salon from three to four per year.
The current Rex Brandt show remains up
through February. Coming. exhibits include
one on the Channel Islands in March and a
submarine exhibit that's planned for the sum-
mer.
Eggleston also hopes to remodel the
museum's Newport gallery on the first deck.
·we need to get the exhibit down there
more up-to-date,· he said. "More interactive.·
lo July, the museum will sponsor an 18-
day trip to Scandinavia and St. Petersburg,
Russia. Will Eggleston join the group?
·Of course,· came his ~er. •Are you

everything from million-dollar mega yachts to
dinky-dollar dinghies on our local pond, Just
to mess around in boats, any kind of boat for
that matter can be fun.
There are others who take boating a wee
bit more seriously. Some take sailing from the
•messing" category to the ·addiction• catego-
ry. But where does this addictive behavior
begin? (By the way, it has been concluded this
behavior is very contagious and habit-form-
ing.) It's hard to believe there are those kind of
addicts attending our local schools. Newport

"Sailing is a sport that is definitely on the·
rise,• says Kristin Mabeny, a crewman on the
Newport Harbor High varsity sailing team.
·we have more girls on the team this year
than boys.·
1n fact, the varsity team consists of Mabeny,
Meredith Potter, Kim Dootsom. Amy Halvors-
en, Kelsey Cochran, Whitney Loufek and only
three boys, Gary Grimes, Justin Law and Ryan
Marshall. The active junior varsity team only
has one boy, David· Diller, and three regulaJ'
female sailors: Sara Huey, A.J. Olson and
Kilamey Loufek. Both varsity and N teams
include about 38 members. ·
The international reputation of the Newport
Harbor High Sailing Team is legendary. Wm-
ning several national two-man and team
championships in recent years bas made an
impression with college coaches. Many young
sailors have parlayed their love for the sport
into college careers. 1n addition. the team trav-
els up and down the California coast, where as
many as 50 high school teams compete in
about eight regattas. U they qualify in certain
events they are able to travel to regattas on
the East Coast, as well.
This year's team has experienced tough
competition with their varsity placing 12th and
sixth and the N taking a secpnd and third in
the first two regattas held in December and
January.
·we lost a lot of seniors, so we are really a
young team this year,· Maberry said. "We're
kind of in a rebuilding mode, but we have
some great ones (sailors) coming up. Sailing
obviously requires a large body of open water
and we are lucky to have Newport Harbor.·
Maberry is betng recruited by the UniveISi.-
ty of Hawaii women's sailing team and said: "I
went to Hawaii and met their team. I really
liked them because they were like a family.
Right now U of H is my first college choice,
but we'll see."

Adding a neµJ.-yet not unfamiliar-chapter to the histqry f?ooks
F or the last 10

recently I was fairly
sure would always
be mine to claim.
Bad economic

sumers closing up
their wallets faster
than Aaron Peirsol's

You see in late
June 1991, as the
paper's much
younger, thinner,

very last front J>.,age
news story for what
The paper went
to three days a
week, earning the
affectionate nick-
rtame the •every-

the staff.
Tony D9dero
FROM THE
NE'NSROOM Most of us were
pretty sure the end
was near for this fine daily
newspaper. was then our Sunday edition.
The story was so inconse-
quential I don't even remem-
ber what it was. But I do
remember that it was a sad
time in this newspaper's his-
tory.
The paper at that time
endured the full furnace
blast of the early 1990s
recession that toppled the
local real estate market and
rocked several of the com-
munity's financial institu-
tions.
That wasn't to be.
The Daily Pilot, under the
gui~ance of former editor Bill
Lobdell and then and still
publisher Tom Johnson,
rebounded and went backJo
six days. It is thrtving quite
nicely today and for nine-
plus years stayed six days
until this week.
Now we are ~k to a
seven--Oay-a-week operation,
and I could,p't be happier.
Even if I did lose my place in
the paper's history books.

Readen are always quick
to point out grammatical
mistakes and typos to us,
and most times, except when
the message is a nasty one,
we appreciate the help. I can
assure the readers that how-
ever tiring it is to see the
mistakes, it is always extra
painful for us to see errors in
print.
We never take these
errors lightly. Still, I couldn't
help but notice the humor in
a couple errors readers
noticed last week.
One reader pointed out
we used the word "grizzly"
when we should have said
"grisly" and other noted we
used the 'word "bear" when
we should have said "bare."
Those are the type of
things that will send the best
editor into immediate hiber-

One otlhe bJggest atU-..
cisms we receive here in the
newsroom is that we let let-
ter writers from South Coun-
ty express their views in ow
paper when it comes to the
El Toro airport debate.
Our critics have been
right and wrong in their
complaints.
They are wrong to believe
that just because the Daily
Pilot is a Newport Beach and
Costa Mesa newspaper that
we should ignore or not pub-
lish other viewpoints.
That is censorship any
way you slice it.
To maintain fairness, we
must accurately portray both
sides of an argwnent, even if
one side is contrary to the
opinion of a majority of our
readers. Besides, we know
our readers file intelligent
enough to listen to both sides
and come to rational conclu-
sions.
But our critics are very
right about one lhihg.
As tl)ey've pointed out,
we've sometimes let oUr
guard down and let ow-
selves be the victim of write-
in campaigns by the South
County forces eager to jam
their viewpoints down our
throats.
For example, last week
we asked our readers to tell
us what it would take to end
the debate on El Toro.
Our e-mailbox was bom-
barded, logging about 30
messages from several fol.ks
south of the Irvine Speat:rum
line, all saying about the ..
same thing.
We didn't and won't run
most of the letters, and we
vow to be more diligent
about such one-sided cyber
attacks in the future.

Newport Beach looks to hire a new 'communications coordinator'
• City once again thin.king about a public

NEWPORT BEACH -It's
come up before. At their
September 1999 retreat, City
Council members talked
about hiring a public infor-

issues in the city.
Then, a year ago, council
members set aside $36,300
for a part-time position to
help shape the city's public
image. City officials ended
up using most of tMe money
to pay an independent con-
sulting firm to inform resi-

effect last year.
Now the topic of a ·com-
munications coordinator" is
back on the table and coun-
cil members are likely to dis-
cuss the issue at their meet-
ing Feb. 13.
While previous proposals
suggested a broad spectrum
of duties for a public rela-

said informing residents

Among their work is the

recently included a compre-

Costa Mesa doesn't have
a similar official. Irvine, on
the other fhand, spent
$248,000 on its public infor-
mation department this year,
said Heather Morris, lrvine's
public information officer.
In Newport Beach, a
number of large institutions
also pay for public relations
departments. Hoag Hospital
only ·has one person who
exclusively deals with public
relations, but lists about 20
people in its corporate com-
munications department,
which also oversees market-
ing and advertising. The

Bludau has proposed a

While Deputy City Man-
ager Dave Kiff said the trash
can campaign had gone
smoothly, and city officials
were pleased with the
results, the consultants were
still outsiders.
"It rem.U}ded us that it
would help to have someone
in house,· Kiff said.
Some council members
seemed highly supportive of
the idea.
•If you look at virtually
every successful company in
the country, they have a
public information officer,·
said Councilman Steve
Bromberg, adding the city's
new spokesperson should
not only try to highlight
good things going on in
Newport Beach but also get
outunportantinformation to
·the city's residents.
"It sounds llke it's a miss-
ing link that we need to put
in the chain,· he said.
C(1>Uncilman Tod Ridge-

carefully at the costs and
benefits of funding a public
information officer. But con-
sidering Newport Beach's
size and profile, emplo~g a
spokesperson might be the
n9ht thing to do, he added.
"We are not doing a very
good jqb of communicating
to our constituents all those
things that we're doing,"
Ridgeway said.
He added residents gen-
erally know little about the
city's numerous subcommit-

discuss issues ranging from
the airport to economic
development to water quail·

GEITING CN1'0 ALIGNMENT
Essen1ially, wheel alignmcn1 is the
proper adjustment of the wheels. On
mos1 vehicles. there are three
adjustmen1 settings: toe (the amoum
lhe fronts o( the wheels are closer
lhan lhe rears). camber (the inward
or outward tih of the wheel a1 the
lop), and caster (the angle al which
the front axles are attached to the
vehicle). On some vehicles, only one
or two of these settings are
adjustable. For many years, only the
front w~s of most U.S.-built cars
had any adjustments. With lhc
introduc1ion of four-wheel
indcpenden1 suspension, many
vehicles now have adjustments on
the rear wheels as well. For these
vehicles, proper alignrnen1 of the
rear wheels is as important as it is
for lhe front wheels.
HINT: Incorrect toe and camber
settings will cause tires to wear out
prematurely, while an incorrect
caster setting will cause lhe vehicle
10 wander and make ii feel unstable
a1 high speeds.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
While car buyers may put a great
deal of effort into checking price and
safely features, they can 1cam a lot •
about a vehicle simply by putting
themselves in lhe driver's seat and
getting a feel for it. They should
be&in by conftrming that all the sigh1
lines behind the wheel are clear.
That is, they can see over the hood
and to the end of the trunk.
Headrests should be supportive and
not restrict vision. Prospective car
owners should check to sec that they
can euily get in and out of the
vehicle. and that they can reach
pedals and da&hboard coouols
comfortably. Finally. a vehicle
ihould fulfill the purposes for Which
"ti is intended.

PROVING A
CRIME HAPPENED
Another factor that is part
of the appeal is the •corpus•
issue -in other words a
"body of evidence• that could
be negated because of lack of
proof that a crime happened.
The law states the court
should not consider any of the
defendant's statements unless
there is evidence of a crime.
And usually the victim's body
is the prime proof that a mur-
der was committed.
•If they redact everything
Eric said -to the police, to
lina, to Kobi there is no way
to prove a crime here,• Bar-
nett said.
He was referring to what
was considered to be the most
telling evidence in the case -
as set of surreptitiously
recorded tapes that contained
conversations between Bech-
ler and his former girlfriend
Tma New. Also significant
was the testimony of Bechler's
best friend, Kobi Laker, who
said Bechler told him four
months before Pegye's disap-

Both legal issues put forth
by Barnett are "pretty good

"They are also fascinating
issues,• he said, "because the
lack of a body always leaves
open questions about the
wounds and manner of death.
There's no way to prove that

It is something that could

he is "optimistic" about its

bis eyes to a new day, a new
team that actually wants to

With young, hungry play-

scrappy tag, the 2001 Pirates
will make most forget of last
yea.r's underachieving team.
"I was very disappointed

group of guys.•
Altobelli, in his runth sea-

season. The results will show
more in the pitching. OCC
will have problems with
depth at the other positions

Freshman Scott Beerer, a
Newport Harbor High prod-
uct. will be Coast's ace. He
led the Buc:s to a 19-5 victory
in their opener against Mt.
San Jacinto Friday. Beerer, a
6-foot pitcher and all-around
athlete, bas brought much
hope for Altobelli and the
Bucs.
•(Beerer) ls, by far, m'y

Altobelli said. •A lot of (uni·

scouts like him and we just
love him because of bis work
ethic and his Qurability.
We're hoping he stays
healthy and has a big year
for us.•
Aside from his pitching
duties, Beerer will play right
field and in the second game
of doubleheaders, he will
move to catcher.
Matt Clanton. Justin Aue
and Brent Brickson, three
freshmen from Fountain Val-
ley, will also brtng strength to
the mound. When Clanton Is
on his game, Altobelli said,
be can throw between 90-9-4
miles per hour. Clanton and
Azze will serve as starters
and Erick.son throws in relief.
Freshmen pitchers from
Woodbridge, Erle Flagel and
Andy Brickson, also have
strong credentials. Erick.son
nearly made the squad at
UCLA, but because of the
Bruins' pitching depth and
an injury, OCC will take
advantage of his skills.
Brett Elliston, who was a
red.shirt last year and is from
Corona del Mar, will be fea-

Woodhouse, a.k.a. Champion
B ob Woodhouse, a Daily Pilot
Sports Hall of Pamer, is pleased
to reflect on the success his old
friend, Coach Lou Holtz, enjoyed this
past year as head grid mentor at the
University of South Carolina.
Woodhouse, 67, however, said, ·1

Woodhouse, a one-time rugged

1948-50, said Holtz' 2000 finish at
7-4 was a winning season.
"The conditions were more
positive and he had the same
players,• Woodhouse said. "It took
him one year to tum things around.
I call him a "fix-it guy.' He can go in
and tum things around, which has
been evident at a number of
top-ranking football schools.·
Woodhouse thought Holtz's work
at South Carolina •was a real magic
act.• Woodhouse has a picture of
Holtz entering a school, and after a
few years juggling things into a
winning pattern, departing for a new
challenge.
• 1 think he finally gets kind of
bored," Woodhouse said.
He bad hoped that another old
friend, bead coach Jim Mora of the
Indianapolis Colts, could have
advanced further in the NFL playoffs
