ated by the council, the 7-acre mobile
home park appeared somewhat mar-
guialized The pdl'k is a smcill commu-
nity of 58 coaches, less than half of
which are occupied by permanent
residents. .
The SSJ0,000 the mobile homes
generate in revenue accounts for
nearly all of the total revenue from the
10-acre site between 15th and 18th
streets along Balboa Boulevard How-
ever, that bas been eclipsed by the
millions in estimated annual revenue
offered by developers proposing any-
thing from boutique hotels to d hve·
star spa resort.
The site has become one of the
most coveted parcels of land in New-
port Beach, with developers drooling
at the thought of the leases expiring.
And while there were offers to allow
the Girl Scouts facility and American
Legion Post 291 that also occupy the
site to either stay or relocate, nothing
concrete was offered to the mobile
home residents.
"You don't dare touch the Girl
Scout House or the American Legion

It's free verse, OK? Valen-
tine's Day. Who started this
anyway? Hard to say. Feb. 14
is the feast day of two early
Christians, both named
Valentine and both martyred
in Rome in the third century.
But historians see little con-
nection between what we
call Valentine's Day, and the
real Val-A and Val-B.
The Big Red Day is more
likely a descendant of the
RQman holiday of Lupercalia

an educated guess.

The 29-yea.r-old singer, best
known for her dynamic performance
in the role of Belle in Disney's
"Beauty and the Beast,• seems too
sharp, too sophisticated, too fashion-
able to be lounging around in a spot
where Muzak hums over the speak-
ers and the view is of palm trees
choking in the smog.
But Egan, a petite woman with
brown eyes and jet black hair, is
more at ease in this setting than her
big city looks and her New York
resume might suggest.

a variety of material from Broadway

•Beauty and the Beast• and songs
from •Cabaret,• the musical m
which she's currently perfomting.
Despite the stereotype of cultural vapidi~ that clings to -Southern Cali-
fornia like a particularly grimy
marine layer, Egan said the area was
fertile ground for her career. Small
theaters like La Mirada, Downey,
San Gabriel and South Coast Reper-
tory gave her the experience at an
eaxly age that allowed her to quickly

become a mature performer.
"Most people don't think of
Southern California as a center for
theater," sbe said. •aut there are
more theaters in Uus community
than in any community in America.
There's far more theaters m this area
than there are in New York City.•
The training of her school days
has helped Egan move very quickly
up the ranks of musical theater.
From a stint working on •aye Bye
Birdie• while still at UCLA, she
moved to performing in •state Fair"
and shortly thereafter to •aeauty
and the Beast• in New York.
As Belle, the ingenue of •Beauty
and the Beast,• Egan won critical
acclaim. But she said she fell con-
strained by the narrowness of the
character, who was a little too per-
fect for her to inhabit comfortably.
With "Cabaret,• which she has
been working in since Last May,
Egan's role is cons1derably different.
She plays the troubled club singer
Sally Bowles, who may asp11e to
perfection, but lives a reality that is
more like an emotional avalanche.
The character, which Llza Minel-
li played m the 1972 film version of
"Cabaret,• is one that Egan loves
portraying for h er combmauon of
cheery ambition and terrible Judg-
ment.
•When you first see her, she's
this funny, vibrant wacko guJ,"
Egan said.
"The next time you see her, she's
snorting cocail'le, and you say 'Oh.
That's where that comes from."'
Egan likes to emphasize the
darkness of her role. Where Minelli

spin on the lyrics.
"It's a drugged breakdown," she
said, a moment when Sally finally
realizes that the consequences of
her poor decisions are going to
overwhelm her. ·
Ega,n's approach is also different
from that favored by Natasha
Richardson, the singer who first
held the role in the revival of the
musical. Richardson played Sally as
a victim, a woman beaten down by
life, while Egan's version is more of
a fighter.
"I know people like Sally," Egan
said. "I have friends who are Sally.•
The psychologically nuanced
approach Egan takes to the role ls
one encouraged by the director of
"Cabaret," Sam Mendes, who also
directed the film" American Beauty.•
Mendes wants every character in
"Cabaret" to have a name and a
back-story, Egan said.
"The audience never sees it, but
it always informs what you do.•
The work of portraying such a
complex character i5 draining,
though. Egan said that the part of
Sally Bowles, though comparable in
terms of stage time to that of Belle,
1S far more exhausting.
•1t•s like working an eight-hour
day,• she said. "Except that you do
it in two-and-a-half hours.•
But for a singer who bad to be
perfect for 700 performances of
"Beauty and the Beast," getting
down to a really flawed and human
role is actually a relief.
"It's pretty honible," she said of
the story, flashing a smile.

Six years ago, the county

recovered is more than $850 million.

Eastbluff Drive and Vista del Oro.
WHAT IT MEANS:
Staff objected to two ficus

installed at the Police Department. If th1\ 1s
feasible, the city will withdraw from the

One could say Orange

yearly average ramfall totals
after another stonn moved
through the area Thursday.
The storm dropped a small

night and into Thursday.
The National Weather Ser-

inch rain at John Wayne Air-

were drenched by a torrential
downpour middfternoon

"It proves you better have a

Thursday's storm was light
compa.r.ed to the El Ni.iio-gen-

the West Coast tbcee years

reaching the rainfall amounts
of that year, let alone achiev-
