Cisco Networking Academy Program
at Estancia High gives students a
boost into a high-tech career market
Over the course of four semes-
ters the program provides hands·
on project based training m net-
work design, set up, mamte-
nance, trouble-shooting and
administration.
So, they teach high school
jwliors and seniors, the ins and
outs of computer networks. Stu·
dents learn how to create net-
works, like the Internet, down to
the precise wiring.
"It's pretty heavy, duty," said
Jett, who teaches two of the four
levels needed to finish the enbre
Cisco course. Tests are taken
on.line at the Cisco ~1te. "The
school needs five 50-foot cables,"
TODAY
Jett said.
After a quick review of what
the different color coded wires
looked like, students began
preparing to make those cables.
Everyone paired up, the more
seasoned students guided the
newer ones.
Lengths of cable were cut from
rolls.
Daniel Vargas. a senior who
has completed the first level of
CtSco training, instructed two stu-
dents on how to cut the jacket off
the cable.
He then gingerly showed them
how to untwist and separate the
wires wiUun the cable, keepmg
MONDAY
track of the various colors.
Students were scattered
around the room in clumps, hold-
ing cable wire up to their noses in
concentration.
They carefully cut the wires
inside the cable, trying to make
them even to fit inside the con-
nector.
When the cable connections
were complete they looked simi-
lar to a phone plug.
"It's neat because it's hands
on," said Janet Garcia, a senior in
the class. "It's not jhat hard if you
pay attention. Now in the future
we need computers, so it's nice to
know what's inside them."
When Garcia shares her
knowledge of how a computer
works and what can be found
inside with her teachers, she said,
they are always swpnsed.
•1t•s pretty easy, but to a

As a professional event plan-

Eastbluff resident, I applaud the
Newport Dunes plan to build a
landmark hotel on property that
is already a recreational center
for Newport Beach and the sur-
rounding community. It will be a
splendid facility for charitable
events, weddings, anniversaries,
luncheons and gathenngs of all
kinds for everyone in Newport
and beyond, and will support
jobs and businesses throughout
~e area year-round.
There ls a real need for the
planned 50,000 square feet of
conference and meeting space
for major events in Newport.
This facility will serve events
that originate locally, like the
Speak Up Newport Mayor's din-
ner and Hoag Hospital fund-rais-
ers, and will bring to Newport
significant county and statewide
events that can now be accom-
modated only in the larger hotels
in Anaheim or Los Angeles.
I have worked with the Dunes
on a recent major charitable
fund-raising event, and was
impressed by the concern of nm
Quinn and all the Dunes staff for
making it a success, includmg
. their generous finanaaJ support.
I am convinced of the Dunes'
commitment to maintain the
highest quality of life in Newport

related to the hotel project and
takti:ig appropriate action to miti-

EDUCATIONALLY SPEAKING
Not voting could
mean children, will
lose out on education
W hen I was 18 years old, teens
couldn't vote. Al that tJ.Jn.e,
the Vietnam War was going
on. There was fury among the young
men, who were told that they were old
enough to dte for their country, but not
old enough to vote for the elected rep-
resentatives who were deadin9 to send
them there. .
Ever since I turned 21 , I have voted
in every election. My chosen candi-
dates and proposals have not always
won, but I added my voice to the
American process.
Most of you, on the other hand, will
not vote. Four out of five registered vot-
ers may choose not to vote this election.
Many of you aren't even registered to
vote. You may think tt will save you
from having to serve jury duty.
Now, they take names from the state
Department of Motor Vehicles. so if you
have a driver's license or lD card, you
can be on the jury list. Don't let jury
duty stop you from registering to vote.
Elected representatives listen to the
people who elect them and the people
who pay for their election campaigns. U
you are in school, or have kids m
school, you probably don't vote. don't
help out with campa1gns· and don't give
money to campaigns. And look where
it has gotten you. Don't you thmk there
is a correlation between your lack of
involvement and the sad state of school
funding?
Amencans over 65 years old are the
biggest single voting block. They can
be counted on to vote in every election,
and to use thetr organizations as giant
lobbying groups to remind representa-
tives that they will deliver a solid num-
ber of voters...Si,nce the rest of us don't
bother to show up at the polls, thdt
group is deciding election results. More
and more of our taxes are going to pro·
vide Medicare and Social Security dol-
lars. Millionaires are •entitled" to those
dollars solely because they have
reached a certain age and have been
employed for a certam amount of time
The tax dollars that you and I supply
don't depend on whether an older per·
son needs U}e money.
School children, on the other hand,
are not "entitled• to attend schools
with well-maintdined bwldmgs or nec-
essary supphes. Currently, o~ third of
the voters, which translates right now
into one-third or the people in your
neighborhood who probably don't have
kids Ill school, can dende that kids
won't get toilets that flush, roofs that
don't leak, and rooms with windows
th.at open and shut.
Proposition 26 would change that. lf
it passes, the majority could decide
when and if to fix our schools. We
would vote on the amount and the
terms of the bond and know how the
money was to be spent before we vot-
ed. The bonds would be subject to two
annual audits.
So, on Marth 7, you have llio chance
to see U the majority should deade
when and if to fix our schools. But, if
you don't get out and vote, less than
the minority can take that decision
away from you. It may save property
taxes m the short tenn, but who is
going to keep funding our Social Sccu·
rity system and Medic-are in the future?
Those systems are funded through
income taxet. The better a person'
cducaUon, the better thetr job, and the
higher their lifetime income. A higher
income leads to paying more income
tax, which will fund those two ay1tenu

Among the elite eight are lhird·
seeded Corona del Mar (21-6) and
Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (22·
6), who square off tonight at 7:30 in
a quarterfinal at Estancia High.
They were expected to be here,
from the start.
The team there at the finish
tonight will need to play one of its
better games, according to CdM
Coach Paul Orris.
SEA QUEENS
· •Notre Dame is a private school
with a solid athletic proram and a
winning tradition,• Orris said.
•They've been here before and they
know what the playoffs are like, so
they're not going to beat them-
selves. To beat them, you'v~ got to
step up and bring your A game and
play hard for four quarters. You not
only need to play hard, but play
smart and execute. They're a chal·
lenge.•
The Sea Kings are no strangers to
an extended postseason, either. The
Pacific Coast League champions
were ID-A runners-up last season
and are 27-8 in section playoff
games during Orris' 14-year tenure
at the helm. Orris has guided CdM
to five section title games and two
championships (1993 and '95).
CdM, which received a first·

round bye, dispatched Northview,
47·25, in Friday's second round, Um·
iting the Vikings to just 14.3% field·
goal shooting (8 of 56).
The Sea Kings, ·led t;>y All-CIF
senior returner Kevin Hansen and
senior point guard Alec Hanson,
have won five in a row and seven of
theu last eight. .
Hansen is averaging 20.0 points
and seven reboWlds per game,
while Hanson averages 12.2 ppg.
Senior Brooks Morris, who has
come off the bench since returning
seven games ago from a broken
wrist. averages 9.8 ppg. The Sea
l<ings are 9-2 in games in which
Hansen, Hanson and Morris have
all played.
Notre Dame, coached by Bob
/'
.
DiMuro, opened the playoffs with a
62-58 win over Workman, then
topped Verbwn Del, 52-46, in Fri-
day's second round.
The Knights, runners-up· in the
Mission League behind.No. 4·seed-
ed Harvard-Westlake {21-5), have
won three straight and 9 of their last
10. They start only one senior and
employ only two from the Class of
2000 in their rotation, according to
Orris.
•They start four juniors, but they
look hke a seasoned club,• Onis said.
Cody Pearson, a 6·foot-3 junior,
paces tonight's visitors, who won
their only section crpwn in 1993. He ·
averaged 23.1 points and 12.5
rebounds in the regular season.
Michael Luderer, another 6·3
junior, chips i{l 16.3 points and eight
rebounds. David Hungerford, a 6· 7
junior center, senior guard Matt Lutz
and junior guard Ruben Sanchez
~ound out tho starting lineup.
"(Pearson and Luderer) ate real
solid," Orris Said.
Though Notre Dame lost its two
league games to Harvard-Westlake,
by nine-and 15 pomts, Orris said at
least one Mission League coach
believes DiMuro's squad is the cir-
cuit's most talented team.
CdM also defeated Verbum Dei
this season, 50·39, m a December
tournament game.
The Sea Kings .have played as
many games at Estancia (five) as at
their own gym this season and are
4-J at their home away from home.
Tonight's winne r will advance to
Friday's semifinal against either
second-seeded San Dimas (24·3) or
Centennial of Compton.
