Barry Faulkner DAILY PILOT CORONA DEL MAR -Thursday was nostalgia night for the Co.rona de! Mar High girls basketball team, which looked more like the squad that amassed 22 wins last year, than the one that flirted with .500 this season. The Sea Kings (14-12) used a 21· 2 first-half run to take command against CIF Southern Section Divi- sion ID-AA first-round visitor Gane- sha, en route to a decisive 68·48 tri- umph. The win advances CdM to Satur· day night's second-round clash at La Canada (16-10). The Sea Kings defeated La Canada last season, 60- 49, in overtime in the first round. Coach Elbert Davis' hosts over- , I whelmed Ganesha (18-12) with bal- ' anced scoring, defensive detenni- nation and depth. Davis repeatedly shuttled in bodies all night, allowing the Sea Kings to keep their legs fresh and defensive intensity high. And on offense, junior guard Andrea Gruber and junior center Carrie Hawkins stepped up to help the McCoy sisters, senior Kristin and sophomore Jackie. Gruber connected three times from three-point range to erupt for an 11-point first quarter. She fin- ished with a team-high 13, one shy of her season-best, and also added seven steals. "That's the Andrea I've been waiting for all year," Davis said. Hawk.ins' 12 points tied her sea- son high, while Jackie McCoy and Kristin McCoy added 12 and 10, respectively. Outsized at nearly every position, the Eagles used hard work and a swarming team defense to pull out a 56-55 win over host Martin Luther King Thursday night in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division 111-AA playoffs. "That was a great high school basketball game tonight," Estancia Coach Paul Kirby said. "We kept our composure and used a lot of double-and tnple-teaming out there.• Eagles' 5-foot-9 sophomore cen- ter Xochitl Byfield, led the way with 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. She and the rest of her team- mates did a solid job of containing Wolves' 6-footer Markisha Lea, who had 22 points, but only two in the second hall. Kirby's decision to switch from man-to-man to zone at halftime helped, too. Estancia (16-10) trailed the entire firi;t half, but took the lead, thanks to a 10-0 third-quarter run. Lisa Hirata scored six of her 11 points in the third quarter, but Wolves' guard Courtney Nabors hit three three-pointers to draw MLK even after three. The game was tied, 55-55, with less than a minute remaining, when the Eagles, outrebounded the entire game, took advantage of four sec- ond-chance offensive opportunities. On the fourth try, Byfield was fouled and hit the first of two free throws with 34 seconds remaining to wm the game.
