BEHIND THE SCENES
Making sure the green rolls true
• WHO: Jerry Roberts
•AGE: 65
• J08 TITlE: Putting green marshal
• HE IS: In charge of making sure
everything rolls smoothly.
• DAILY DUTIES: For the third
consecutive year, Roberts has
watched over the putting green at
Newport Beach Country Club, mak·
ing sure tournament players and
their caddies have everything they
need.
"I assist the players, caddies and
factory reps," he said. "I'm here
from the fint daylight until dark,
because players prfetice their
putting early in the morning and
come back at the end to practice for
the next day."
Roberts also assis~ in crowd con-
trol, keeping spectators off the
putting surf ace.
•DID YOU KNOW7 The "quiet"
signs used by course marshals at
most professional golf tournaments
are not used in Senior PGA Tour
events. •
"Seniors don't like the quiet signs,
so marshals just hold their hands
up," Roberts said. "I never have
quite figured out why they don't like
them."

evening's goal is to raise $300,000.
An association spokeswoman
stressed the importance o{ Stewart's
work.
"The most important factor in a non-
proht organization is your volunteer
bdse." s<iid Patrice M. Poidmore, direc-
tor of social events. "She has done a
tremendous job of getting key people
involved. It is a job on top of a job."
But Stewart, who has worked almost
40 hours a month on the gala since Sep-
tember, said it is second nature for her.
•It's aggressive, but it is attainable,"
she said. "lt's what makes the world yo
'round. We know that we are making a
difference." ·
Stewart also helps spread the word
about the organization's new communi-
ty program, Operation Heartbeat.
The program aims to decrease the
number of deaths resulting from ·heart
attack and cardiac arrest by strength-
ening the "chain of survival." The
"links" in the chain represent the steps
that must be taken to survive a heart
attack: early access, early CPR. early
defibrillation and early advanced ca.re,
Stewart said.
Another reason for her involvement,
she said, is tbat the association is
extremely organized and easy to work
for.
"There is a lot o[ great support."

the advantages to being a

"I'll still be considered

they remembered it was my
birthday," she said. .
Smith, who was born in

P!anning Commission
delays vote on Target
• Neighbors say they
don't oppose the
store but would like it
to be better planned.
Andrew Glazer
DAILY PILOT
COSTA MESA -The
Planning Commission vot-
ed late Monday night to
delay approving a new Tar-
get store alter dbout 10 resi-
dents complained that the
current plans would bring
traffic and noise pollution to
theu Halecrest neighbor-
hood.
Residents spent three
hours telling the corrurus-
sion they did not oppose the
store 1tsell, but had objec-
tions to some of the plans.
The COITUlllSSlOn will contin-
ue the heanng on March 1.1 .
"I felt there were some
unresolved issues Lhat
needed to be worked out,"
said WaJt 0dvenport, chair-
man of the commission.
Al M orelli, who owns two
homes on Shdillrock Lane
next to the site of U1e shop-
ping center, dnd City Coun-
cilwoman Linda Dixon
called for the hedri.ng.
Because 11 conforms to,
aty codes, sldff members
said, the Planning Commis-
sion was not reqwred to dis-
cuss the 17-acre project -
which developers satd will
include d dnvc-lhrough
restaurdnt and severdl
smaller stores
Both Dixon and Morelli
said they welcome a new
Target store at 3030 Harbor
Blvd. However, they both
agTeed that the enorrruty of
the project mcnted public
discussion before the com-
mission.
Morelli said the project's
developer, Dc1yton Hudson
Corp., dJd not address Hale-
crPst homeowners' con-
cerns -even c1fter it held
three meetings wiU1 resi-
dents last year
"Those? mel'tings were
very controlled,· he said.
"They did not give people a
chance to speak up.•
Morelli and his attorney,
Simone Wong-Easum, pre-
pared a 51-page document
detailing their uneasiness
about the planned project.
The store, as planned, w'4)
flood the homes or nearQy
residents~· noise of
slamm.in oors and
chirping al according
to the report. ·
ln the document, Morelli
recommended developers
leave a 20-foot buffer zone
between Target and adja-
cent homes. He also said
the developer should con-
struct a berm and plant
trees there to block car
noise.
However, comrruss1oners
did not receive copies of
Morelli's highly technical
report until Friday. And city
planning stall had neglect-
ed to inform Morelli and tus
dttomey about a previous
Planning Commission study
session.
"We would've prepped
them about our issues if we
went to the study session."
Wong-Easum said. "And
I'm not a city planner. I
cou.ld've used the extra time
to bring myseU up to
speed"
Davenport said he read
the entire document over
the weekend.
~I had more Ulan enough
bme witll it.· he said
Morelli spent more U1an
an hour and a hall Monday
rught outlining his report for
the commissioners.
"I'm sure tlley d1dn1t
have time lO read 11," he
said. "I had to cut a few
items short.•
Jeffrey S Haber, an
attorney for Dayton Hudson
Corp.. said he welcomed
further discu.ssion abou~l,he
pro1ect.
"We look forward lo
responding to any questions
from the commissioners,"
Haber said.

BELMONT SHORE -The vast
knowledge the Corona del Mar
High girls water polo tea.J1L pas
absorbed from Coach John Vargas
goes beyond skills and strategy.
As the unseeded Sea Kings (20-
11 )·enter today's 3 p.m. CIF South-
ern Section Division IV· title game
against top-seeded Santa Margarita.
(23-6) at the Belmont Plaza pool,
they also bear the wisdom of one of
Vargas' yams.
•A long time ago, Coach Vargas
told us there is always a top dog and
an underdog,• Cd.M senior goalie
Arin Hendrickson said . "And he.
toid us tf the top dog ever goes in
thinking it's going to kick some seri-
ous butt, the underdog usually bites
it in the butt."
CdM, tri-champion of the Pacific
Coast League, lost to Santa Mar-
ganta in the Villa park Tournament
the second week in December.
Hendrickson recalled the score was
7-4. But CdM played that game
without senior two-meter standout
Melinda Tucker and has shown
plenty of teeth in the postseason.
"Put it. this way," CdM senior
Hayley Hapeman said. "We didn't
come th.is far to lose."
Vargas, the U.S. men1s national
team coach who has guided ·the
CdM boys team to eight section title
games and five CIF titles, including
the Division Il crown last fall, has
prepared his girls to win since tak-
ing over the program th.is season.
Implementing a demanding con-
ditioning program and challenging
them to get the most out of their
abilities, he led the rormer Sea View
League doormat to a share of the
PCL title , its first playoff appear-
ance, and to the brink of adding to
the school:s collection of CIF ban·
ners.
"He gave us a choice,• Hapeman
said. ·u we wanted to be good, we
had to be willing to work. We start-
ed getting up at 5:30 a.m. during
Christmas vacation, so we could
practice twice a day. We never did
that before. Some of our swim sets
have been pretty gnarly. •
The CdM defense has allowed
opponents to average just four goals
in four playoff games, durtng which
CdM has averaged nearly 10 goals.
After rolling over Katella, 16-2,
and Brea Olinda, 11-4, CdM edged
defending Division IV champion
Rosary, 7-6, then held off Santa
Monica, 5-4, in Tuesday's semifinal.
•Everything starts with our
defense,• said Hendrickson, who
has 31 postseason saves and bas
helped her team post six scoreless.
quarters in the playoffs.
Santa Margarita, coached by for·
mer Costa Mesa All·CIF goalie
Scott Taylor, who coached the Mesa
boys team to the ClF DMslon II final
in t 997, has outscored three play9ft
foes, 27-10.

Coffee was hardly
necessary for Tuesday's TOSHIBA
early-morning tee time with
Gary McCord.
The defending champion of the Toshiba
Senior Classic, McCord said he only had about
three hours' sleep prior to his appoinbnent as
keynote speaker of the golf tournament's
Community Breakfast, at the Newport Beach
Marriott. .
But with stories about mooning the Snoopy
II Blimp from his television perch to his wife's
new dog, a hairless Chihuahua named Rex,
McCord gave the near-capacity crowd a
rib-tickling wake-up call with his hilarious
antics and a memorable recap of his We in the
last 24 hours.
McCord, a part-time CBS golf analyst and .
part-time golfer who created a new chapte r in
Senior PGA Tour his_tory in last year's Toshiba
Classic with an wi.torgettable five-hole playoff
victory, revealed the truth about his
remarkable 18-foot putt for eagle on the first
playoff bole to extend the playoff with J ohn
Jacobs.
"It was like neuro-Ping Pong (before the
putt), knowing the guys in !he television truck
were saying something about me,• McCord
said. "But, the thing is, 1 forgot to look at this
putt.•
Bent over in a putting position at the
podium, McCord said once he got over the
ball, there was no way he could retreat and
line up his putt. •u I had to back out, can you
imagine what they would be saying in the
truck?" said McCord, who admitted he was
paying more attention to the ESPN television
cameras than his long pressure putt to remain
(llive in the playoff. •u J .get up out ol th.is (putting) stance,
they'd say I'm going to choke and probably
throw up a1l over my Foot-Joys. So I thought,

hit it. Hey, I'm probably not going to make it,
anyway.'

•Theoretically, I guess it should get easier
(to shoot your age) as you get older,• Littler
said with a warm laugh. "It's fun to do. And
right now I'm healthy."
Littler, who won the U.S. Amateur in 1953,
a year before Palmer, has suffered through a
series of physical problems in his career,
1 including a four-year period in his 60s in which
he underwent eight surgeries for various
ailments.
"Shoulders, knees, arms-you name it,•
Llttler said, .. and it's hard to come back in your
60s."
Llttler's last surgery was three years ago
on his right rotator cuff, which was extremely
1 difficult to recover from, and, trying to
compensate for pain often forces a player into
bad habits with the golf swing.
•Sometimes, you don't even know where
you are because (the pain) is so great,• said
Littler. who won 29 titles on the PGA Tour,
including the 1961 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills
Country Club by one stroke.
Llttler has played every year at the Toshiba
