A..L--A.--. ' during the last
............. 150 yeaJS. AT SEA aft~owev:~
arrival from
Macquarie Island, we discovered
that the Aucklands do &.ave resi·
dents who l~ad an idyllic life. They,
keep beacbfront residences and
live off of the sea. It's a bigamous
societf, where the males keep half
a dozen females occupied, lolling
on the beach day after day.
So we shouldn't have been sur-
prised when were chased off of
the first beach we landed on by a·
rriale hooker sea lion. Rarest of the
five species of sea lions, he has a
good thing going and doesn't
want anyone messing with bis
slice of paradise.
The Auck.lands, New Zealand's
World Heritage reserve, are locat-
ed at 50 south and 166 east. about
250 miles south of New Zealand's
South Island.
Virtually no one visits. These
lush volcanic· islands are cold and
desolate. But they are also blessed
with incredible topography and
biodiversity. There are dozens of
coves, fjords and beaches. And
each of these sheltered places has
a resident hooker sea lion family
headed by a 600-pound bull with
big teeth and a full lion's mane.
The majority of the 6,000· hook-
er sea lions reside in the Auck·
lands. A notable see lion trait is the
ability to move quickly on land,
thanks to front and rear flippers,
· which turn sideways and allow
them to •stand" upright and move,
when inspired, about as fast as a
jogger through rough terrain. ·
After landing on the beach at
Camp Cove in Carnley Harbor, 1
was sitting on a rock up the
beach when a sea lion emerged
from the water and started
ambling toward me.
"How interesting,• l thought.
"He's curious about who this new
animal is on his beach.· Then the
sea lion picked up his pace, and I
realized he was furious, not curi-
ous. Fellow crew member John
was with me.
Fortunately, John had developed
a limp after falling during a previous
climb. We scrambled off the beach
onto some tussock high ground,
confident that the sea lion wouldn't
follow. He did, and quickly.

A hooker sea lion keeps an eye on Alaska Eagle skipper Brad Avery.
Soon we were making our way
through the Rata forest over dead
trees and through bogs, looking
back to see if the sea lion was fol-
lowing. He was, a huge gray mass
snorting and lumbering uphill with
amazing ease. John, fearfw that his
limp might cause a Darwinian
result, climbed a nearby tree.
I doubled back for the beach,
then beard the rest of our crew
returning from a bike. The sea lion
,followed, and John snuck back to
the beach behind him. We all ran for
the dinghy, followed by the sea lion.
The dinghy. was launched just
as the sea lion's teeth nipped at
the outboard's propeller. We pad-
dled into deep water and started
the motor, getting back to Alaska
Eagle as our adversary circled, his
nostrils snorting just above the
water. This experience was dupli-
cated at another cove the next
day. The crew was held at bay
from the dinghy by a huge bull
who charged from the beach into
the bush whenever someone
appeared. Finally Mac and Don
got to the dinghy and moved it to
where the ere~ safely boarded it.
The most extreme sea Lion
encounter occurred today. We
brought Alaska Eagle into remote
Musgrave Inlet, to bike one kilo-
meter to Lake Hinemoa, a beauti-
ful body of water fed by a dozen
waterfalls cascading from a 1,000·

foot high cresent-shaped terrace.
For an hour, eight of us bush-
whacked through dense forest,
alternately walking and crawling
through incredibly thick barriers
of Dracopbyllum, Rata and Myr-
sine. We forged streams and bogs
every 10 minutes; the previous
day's rains made everything
mushy. Suddenly we beard a dis-
tant roar/snort, then another.
We.kept on going, finally reach-
ing the lake, which was a beautiful
sight if a little overgrown around
the edges. Andy began to lead us
across a major stream when we
looked down and saw the sea lion
glaring up at us from under the
water. He emerged and charged.
We all scattered. It was incredi-
ble that this beast would be this
far inland. Bruce nee and I ran
pell-mell to the north. and as luck
would have it, the sea lion fol-
lowed. Bruce turned, waved his
arms and roared. The s~a lion
charged. We ran like hell, scram-
bling and crawling through the
bush, looking back and always
seeing a quarter-ton of intent
marine life comfug at us.
We finally lost him and met up
with the others back at the side of
the lake. After a few minutes of
gathering our wits, the sea lion
suddenly swam up and lumbered
into the nearby reeds. This was
getting old.

The chase was on again. We
ran down a marked trail, Robbie
and Lee out in front. We stopped,
breathing hard. From around the
comer, the sea lion came, snorting
a nd wild·eyed. It was time to
make a stand like men. Bruce and
Andy confronted him.
He hesitated, then lunged, jaws
agape. Bruce hit him over the head
with a big Rata branch, which
promptlt' broke in two and had no
effect on the sea lion. It did create
the oddest look on Bruce's face.
We fled again, all the way to the
beach, where two more 5eCl lions
hastened our entry into the dinghy.
From the safety of Alaska
Eagle's deck, we saw the pin-
nipeds on the rocks gazing out at
us, nobly standing upright on ele-
vated llippers. The beach was
theirs again. The lake too. We
never saw a human other than
our crew du.ring our stay in the
Aucklands. Wild and beautiful,

inhabitants.

was just doing his part to defend
one of nature's last frontiers. ·

Don't dump taxic

The criterion for true beauty is
that it increases upon examination.
Beauty is a passport given by God to
create memories, capture hearts and
something always constant and

To me the sea is beautiful and its
beauty definitely ino:eases upon ·
examination. It's a passport to pris-
tine beaches, islands, harbors, the
elements and sunshine. Water is the
most essential ingredient of our
everyday existence. We swim in it;
sail upon it; bathe in it; drink it and
even quench the thirst of plant life

folks, I live here too).
So if water were so valuable, why
would anyone want to abuse it? Oil;
fuel; used medical syringes; paper
cups; beer cans; diapers; sewage and
chemicals are found daily in the
water. I'm not talking about Sri Lan-
ka. Haiti or some other impoverished
nation, sadly, I speak of our own
coast, even inside Newport Harbor.
"Basically you can't put anything
in the harbor except plain. dear
water,· said Orange County S}lerlff's
Department Lt. Dottie Ronan, of the
Harbor Patrol.
This means no soap, sawdust or
technically, you can't even wash bird
droppings off your deck. Many
boaters purchase exotic deck soaps
because the manufacturers claim
they're biodegradable, however, the
fish and sea life choke and die just as
easily on the exotic soaps as they do
on regular detergents. A common
mistake made by weekend boaters is
varnishing a toe rail. As they sand
the.teak. the dust falls into the water.
This is illegal.
The Orange County Dist. Atty. 's
environmental protection unit inves-
tigates and prosecutes persons that
are responsible for depositing haz-
ardous materials into the harbor. The
most common problem reported is
automatic bilge pumps that pump
when the water level becomes high.
Out goes the water along with any
oil OT fuel that bas accumulated in
the bilge. It's not YOW' water -it
belongs to all of us so don't compro-

NEWPORT • MESA RESIDENTS
IF YOU WANT EL TORO AIRPORT ...
VOTE ·10 ON MUSURE F
Measure F was drafted by South County cities trying to kill El Toro Airport.
Irvine Mayor Christina Shea revealed South County's agenda when she said,
" ... What we ought to be doing is expand John Wayne
Airport because it would have the least impact on the fewest
residents at the lowest cost." (LA Times, Aprll 26, 1998)
Read the fi ne print of Measure F. It says that a court can require a simple
majority vote to expand John Wayne.
Do you think South County will help Newport Beach and Costa Mesa
residents when the pressure to expand JWA grows?
MEASURE FIS DANGEROUS,

jails to be built in cities near our schools and ch~rches -without a vote of

Instead of golfers shooting for birdies in the $1.3 million

AHen Doyle holds the championship trophy on Sunday, his first tttte of the year and fifth of his career.
Doyle finished at six-under 136
for the tournament and became the
sixth different champion in lhe
event's six-year history.
"I don't make the rules, l jusl play
by them, • Doyle said of his title.
"I'm thrilled to win. It would've been
better for the tournament and the
sponsor and the fans to play (a final
round), but it just didn't happen. •
Doyle, known mostly for having
the shortest backswing on the senior
tour and being an inspiration to
hackers with similar quirks, is rarely
asked his opinions and is almost
never scrutinized by the media.
·1 don't mind laying back. and not
being"'in the limelight, • Doyle said.
"Other guys get asked why they're
not playing better after a round, and
guys get asked when they're going
to win again. But I don't get asked
that much. They (members of tl1e
media) are nQt worried about me.
"They'll ask Tom Kite when he's
going to win, and they'll ask Tom
Watson (who won his second start on
the senior lour last September) when
he's going to win again, and, by
·about April, they'll start asking Lan-
ny Wadkins why he's playing so
poorly. And they'll ask Bruce Fleish-
er when he's going to win again.
"But they won't ask me that. I'm
that next tier down. "
Actually, Doyle ranked third on
the senior lour mc ney list at
$1,911,640 last year as a rookie, and,
following this weekend's title al the
Toshiba Classic, is secona among
2000 money leaders at $356,888.
So Doyle isn't exactly on that next
tier down. "But that's thf!percepbon,
"he said.
He isn't animate d like Gc:try
McCord, he has a funny backswing
and he was never a regular on the
PGA Tour. But Doyle was one or the
nation's best amateur players and
realizes now be can compete against
the marquee names from the PGA
Tour, like Kite, Wadkins and Walson.
"You're known in your (amateur)
circles, but you're not known too
much outside of the amateur circles,
"he said. "I never won
the U.S. Amateur, but
no one won more than
the other stuff. r
thought I had a great
amateur career, and,
yeah, that was my plan
(to try to earn a senior
tour card). •

Not that I'm jealous or anything.
One thing that has remained true throughout the

This past weekend was the purest form of fun in
youth baseball. I mean, jeez, how could you NOT
l,lave fun with all that stuff going on?
Alter the bells and whistles stop and the game itself
is the only thing going on, for some, the fun stops.
I'm not talking about the youngsters. I used to walk
around for hours with a Kermit the Frog on my arm
and that would entertain me all day. Needless to say,
youngsters can have fun with anything.
It's you parents, I'm most concerned with. The
game becomes a life-or-death struggle for some. I
watch you when l cover the games and I must say, it's
more entertaining than Kermit was.
There's a fine line, however, when entertainment
turns to uncomfortable, for both the fans and the
youngsters playing.
So for that, I re-introduce you to the Adult Little
League Pledge, which should be said before each and
every game played.
For those that took the pledge last year, you must
do it again, due to some additional changes to the

Please raise your right hand and repeat after me.

• Large tryout has

Joseph Boo
DAILY PILOT
COSTA MESA -Wl\en
tryouts for Estancia High 's
boys swim team were held
e~er this year, nine fresh-
men showed up. That excit-
ed Eagles Coach John Car-
penter.
"That's the most freshmen
coming out for swimming in
the last 10 years," he said.
Carpenter is hoping those
incoming Eagles form the
basis of a solid swim pro-
gram. It also meaqs that
Estancia will be able to fill
every lane during meets, giv-
ing them a competitive
squad.
The most exciting
Estancia freshman is Frank
Gamboa, who already has
experience in swimming
competitions. He will start in
freestyle events and eventu-
ally partake in all the strokes.
"Gamboa already has
quite a few years of swim-
ming experience,• Carpen-
ter said. "He'll fit right in
with varsity competition.•
But Estancia's season
hopes primarily rest on
re turning seniors David Col·
lier and Brett Hellmich.
Hellmich finished 13th in
the Pacific Coast League in
the 100-yard backstroke.
Carpenter believes Collier
should finish in the league's
top 16 in the 500 freestyle.
Senior Mike Fimer is the
Eagles' sprint freestyle swim-
mer.
"Our goal is for everyone
to improve on last year's
individual times,' Carpenter
said .
Junior Jon Reddoch is a
freestyle swimmer while fel-
low junior Phil Westfall is the
Eagles' individual medley
and butterfly swinimer.
Sophomores K.G. Fair-
bam, David Teixeira, Vu.
Tran and Cliff Glacy have
impressed Carpenter so far.
Tran is one of the Eagles' top
freestyle swimmer. Teixeira
swims the butterfly and
freestyle. Fairbam and Glacy
are Estancia's two breast-
stroke swimmers. Freshman
Jeff Hellmich also made
Estancia's varsity squad.
With 24 swimme rs,
Estancia was able to field
both varsity and junior varsi-
ty teams, the 'first time it did
that in two years. And that
has the Eagles optimistic
about their future in the
pool. '

But it is freshman Jason
