Alex Coolman DAILY PILOT 0 revor Pinnock likes to push things to the limit -and sometimes he l.J..kes to push them a little bit further than that. . ·1 don't like U1e idea of holding back,· Pinnock said. "I like the idea of playing without inhibition." But t11e director of The English Concert, t1 perfor- mance of Bdch's Branden- burg Concertos using peri- od instruments, which comes to lhe Orange County Performing Arts Center on Thursday, said going to the limit doesn't simply mean playing as loud ;.is possible. The desired effect, he said , is not mc1ely to pro- duce a liig rdcket. but to fee l an instrument strain- ing agt1inst its own physi- cal restrictions. Pe riod instruments, which arc duplicates (or sometimes dntique origi- ndls) of the Hllh century instrument!> used m the first perfonnt1nces of Bach's works, mdke that feeling easier to achieve l>ecause their construction is simpl<'r and their dynamic range more nar- row tllan Uml of U1eir con- temporary counterparts. "With modem instru-· ments, one ic; constantly having to make decisions of what to use and what not to use, and sometimes one is in the position of having to cut back rather than play- ing Um instrument to the full," Pinnock said. On a period flute or a period harpsichord, that's not the case. Pinnock can let it rip like a rocker with his amp turned up to 10, and he'll still know that he won't overpower the piece. The e ffect of all this is U1at when when Pirmock and his 27-me rnber ensemblP. take the stage, tlleir concert will show- CdSe not only i:Jdch's ele- gant hdrmonies, but also tlle nearly 200-ye1;1r-old FYI The English Concert a performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos on period instruments ..... -· j~ . .. .. · .1 /J Trevor Pinnock • WHERE: The Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa • WHEN: 8 p.m. Thursday • HOW MUCH: S36 to S44 •PHONE: (714) 740-7878 tinlbre that characterized tlle music as it was origi- ndlly played. For years, that sound was lost. Newer, more sophisticated instruments had replaced the primitive flutes and valueless trum- pets that Bach wrote for. It was only in the early '70s that the momentum began to develop to rediscover the original voicings. "When we started, very few people played on period instruments, and it was really a huge chal- lenge. We had to start from scratch and really find out the secrets of tlle iostnunents and they did- n 't give up their secrets easily,• Pumock said. To play the Branden- burg's melodies on a trum- pet with no keys, for example, it's necessary lo play in a very high regis- ter. Period flutes have only one key, and period bows a re much lighter Ulan modem bows. In general, d concert with these instruments produces a sound tllat is somewhat crisper and somewhat faster than a concert using up-to-date technology. But whether this is the "real" sound of Bach's work or not is a subject tllat is open to some debate. There are dis- agreements over how exactly Bach intended the concertos to sound. "In the 18th century, not so many details were written into the score,• Pinnock said. And that means that a lot is left to the interpretation of the performers. "There's choices of speed, choices of inner dynamics -not the marked ones of forte and piano, but whether we make crescendos and diminuendos within that,• he said. •There can be a lot of variety.• In The English Concert, negotiating these subtle shifts is a particularly tricky business because Pinnock must conduct while playing the harpsi- chord. Batonless, with both arms generally occu- pied playing a melody, he has to coax some very slight adjustments out of his players. ·A lot of it is done through lbe eyes. A lot of it is,done just through breathing together,• Pin- nock said. "The slightest glance, a little bit of a shrug of the shoulde~ can mean an awful lot.• The essential thing, Pinnock argues, is that all the speculation about details shouldn't over- whelm what is so Uuilling about Bach's work: the passion that surges beneath his careful com- position. Pinnock calls it "the gut• of the music-lis- tening experience. ·1rs very important that these two things, the head and the gut, are in bal- ance,• he said. •Then we have the chance of mak- ing good music which is true to the music and will also mean something to the people, whether we're playing old music or new music." Tony Altobelli DAILY PILOT COSTA MESA -Costa Mesa H.igh's baseball team likes to walk on the wild side, much to .the dismay of Coach Kirk Bauermeister. "1 told the players after- ward that we seemed to come alive when the sixth and sev~ enth innings come around,• Bauermeister said following Thursday's 7-7 tie with Coro- na-based Santiago in the Cos- ta Mesa Tournament. Considering the fact that the Mustangs ( 1-1-1) allowed 11 hits and 12 walks, a 7-7 tie isn't too shabby. •Any time you give up that many base runners, you're supposed to lose,• Bauermeis- ter said. "Both teams went back and forth and when we finally shut them down in the seventh, we were able to tie it up." Nick Cabico went 5 for 5 with a run scored and four RBis for the Mustangs, includ- ing a two RBI single with two out in the bottom of the sev- enth, scoring Brent Stevens and Billy Halverson and tying the score. Jbe Sharks (2-2-1) missed numerous opportunities to blow the game open early, stranding 14 runners on base, including 12 in the first five innings. "We managed to hang in there,• Bauermeister said. ~we came up with a big pitch, or a big defensive play when we needed it most." After Cabico tied the game with his single, neither team could score in the eighth inning and the game was called due to darkness. Chris Franco went 3 for 5 with a run scored, while Halverson went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Mesa used six hurlers. Tim Snow led the Sharks' attack with four hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Kurt Paddock added a· hit, two walks and two RBis. 1Tailing, 7-3, the Mustangs turned a couple of Santiago defensive miscues into two • runs with two outs. Evan McGuire scored from third when a throw to second base on a stolen base attempt by Cabico was kicked away. After a passed ball moved Cabico to third, Franco's infield single scored the sophomore second baseman, cutting the lead to, 7-5. After Steven Shores ca.me in to shut down Santiago in the top of the seventh, the Mustangs managed to tie il The Mustangs shot them- selves in the foot for most of the game. Joseph Boo DAILY PILOT NEWPORT BEACH -Wel- come back, CdM. It must have been nice for Newport Harbor High's softball team to see its old Back Bay rival Corona del Mar across the field Thursday, and not because the Sailors won, 15-3. After a hiatus in 1998 and 1999, the Sea Kings have a softball team again, and the intense, but friendly, rivalry is renewed. "We haven't played them in three years,• Newport Harbor Coach Jess Martinson said. "It's nice to see them again. They have a good, young team." It was a nonleague affcpr with CdM now in the Pacific Coast League. Newport also came in with a 2-0 record, and the host Sailors jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning, sending 11 batten to the plate. · Newport senior Lindsay Moore singled in Athena Vasquez for the game's first run. 1\vo batters later, Kristen Smith bad a two-run sin- gle, scoring Moore and Shelby Crisp. Amanda Campbell drove Smith home, and Lauren Gallardo scored Newport's fifth run off a fielder's choice. The young Sea Kings (0-3) did not help thell' cause, committing four of their seven errors in the first inning. "We've got to get over the errors,• CdM Coach Teny Chris- tiano said. Newport scored two more runs in the second, five in the third, and three in the fourth before CdM reliever Alissa Zoelle pitched consecutive . 1-2-3 innings. Newport's freshman pitcher Kim Moore arrived in the fourth inning and retired eight of the first nine batt~ she faced, giving up a lone baserunner on an error. CdM then scored twice in the sixth off three consecutive two_- out singles. Zoelle and Meaghan Bunney started the rally, and , Casey Bunney drove both of them in with her second single. "Most of them know each other. We play them again (on March 20). Hopefully, we'll have a different outcome." Survival instinct evide_~ Softball OUTLOOK~ • Sailors showing grit with a very quick start. NEWPORT BEACH - Here's what Newport Harbor High's softball team had to deal with so far. Sophomore Llz Lord, who hit .311 last season, left to concentrate on Newport's girls volleyball team. Junior Usa Huntington, the Sailors' leading hitter last year, is out for two weeks with an injured elbow. Final- ly, pitcher Stephanie Ciralli got hurt and missed New- port's first three games. A 3-0 start barely consti- tutes a streak, but consider- ing all the yom.ig Sailors endured, it is impressive. "This group of kids is play- ing really hard," Newport Coach Jess Martinson said of a squad with six freshmen. In the absence of Hunting- ton, seniors Kristen Smith and Lindsay Moore have stepped up, and freshman Shelby Crisp has been inserted into the lineup. Smith, whose 12 RBis were second-best on the team last spring, hit for the cycle (single, double, triple, home run) in a 14-0 win over Saddleback. A two-time All- Newport-Mesa District play- er, she plays shortstop. In addition to her solid glove work at third base, Moore got off to a torrid start at the plate. "She's hitting around .600 so far," Martinson said. Senior Jodi Dieckmeyer returns with a solid bat in center field. She is joined in the outfield by junior left fielder Lamen Gallardo, who hit a grand slam in an 11-3 win against Estancia, and sophomore right fielder Bri- anne Parmeter. · Freshman Kim Moore picked up th& wins in New- port's first two games and Ciralli will be the other half of the all freshmen pitching duo. Foreign-exchange student Mariko Mikami filled in admirably for CiraW, pitching six innings against Estancia. On the right side of the infield are freshmen. Amanda Campbell is at first and Athena Vasquez at second. Martinson describes Vasquez, the leading scorer on the Sailors' girts basketball team, as one of the team's best athletes. · The Sailors' defense is sol- id up the middle with Smith, Vasquez . and Huntington. After Huntington bounced around the field last year, the two-time all-district player will primarily catch. She led the Sailors with a .370 batting average and drove in 10 runs.
