Watching a 'straight edge ' kid come of age in a dangerous world
·w e.have a picture of
him taken some years
• ago when he was a
wee lad. He's just months old
and slight. A puny little guy ·
wrapped around a fragile
human soul without a clue
and full·of wonder. It is a por-
~ait of an empty vessel with
annamon brown eyes. With a
gaze, his eyes beseech us -
the people who creat~ this
young ~p -to care and to
comfort and to show the way.
And yet there's a character to
the face of this tot that reveals
a wisdom he is n·otyet capa-
ble of expressing by deed.
The photo, as we affectionate-
ly call it sWl, is the picture of
our "little old man."
What you don't see is the
man on the other side of the
camera. The father spilling
over with pride. But there's a
hidden fear there. too, a fear·
thathe hanleither the skill
nor the insight to deliver on
the request written in the eyes
of his little man.
The days that have occu-
pied the nearly 15 years since
Byro~ de Arakal
BETWEEN THE. UNES
that image was captured have
known challenges and ·
despair. Joy and sorrow. Frus-
tration and satisfaction. Worry
and serenity. Raising my old-
est boy, J told him the other
day, has been like filling a
carton of salt a grain at a time.
It tan be tedious and difficult
and mundane. Progress is
creeping and mostly imper-
ceptible, save for the ~
sional events -at first sepa-
rated by months and even
years -when the boy's good
words or actions or both are
evidence that the carton is
indeed filling up. That he.gets
it.
It's this way year after year.
Grain after grain. And some-
where along the way, the
baby becomes a boy who
begins to uncover that side of
the world aitd people that is
cruel and ridiculing and self.
isb. But he makes his way -
sometimes brimming with
confidence; at times drenched
in self-doubt-to tlle brink of
manhood.
Now, nearly 15, my boy is
beginning to make his way on
his own terms. And it is not
lost on me -his dad -that
' the jungle he has begun to
roam holds opportunities and
dangers. So often I want to
forbid his adventures, fearing
he will fall prey to those
things my parents worried
would ovemm me. The dope
and the cigarettes and the
booze and the sex. But rather
thanlecture,ltrust,praying
with all the fiber I have, that
each grain of salt imparted to .
him was the right one.
Little by little. I see a man
emerge. He's found life's pas-
sion in his drums, in the
countless hows that he's
worked to master them over
the last three yeaIS. He is
accomplished, and J am
proud. I see it in bis schooling,
which he is less enthusiastic
about and which comes not as
easily to him. But he's begun
to understand its value, and ..>
he works at it.
Yet up until Friday night, 1
could not shake a lingering
fear. He gathers regularly
now with his chums from
church, often at lii.angle
Square, where they catch a
movie and eat some food or I
just roam. And the place is
crawling with youth seeking
discovery and acceptance and
independence. But too many
of them seem to think they'll
find it at the end of a cigarette

Robert Walchli, who lives

Walchli is so upset about

the argument h~ tq be broken

He yelled in Cisek's face a

Proctor added that he has

A ClEAR VIEW
Not all of the nearby neigh-

over public land for his own use.
Susan Phillips, who lives
across the street from Cisek,
sajd as long as Cisek doesn't
block her view, he can do any-
thing he wants.
•He is actually improving the
look of the area,• she said.
"He hasilelped the longevi-
ty of these trees (by trimming
them) a nd has improved my
view too by getting rid of those
lqng bristles on them," she srud
Another neighbor, Helga
Pralle, said she was inspired by
Cisek's landscaping to do somP
work of her own.
"When he trimmed his trees,
they looked so good that mine
looked overgrown ano I want-
ed mine to look as good as his,"
Pralle said, as arborists con-
tracted by the city of Newport
Beach worked on her trees.
But improving the look is not
the point, said WaJchli's mother,
Jean Bruton, who said Cisek
has rwned the charm of Old
Corona del Mar.
"He's taken over the whole area wt.lere picruckers would
come and enjoy charnp_agne
and the old trees," she Sa.Jd.
Cise.k said tries to ignore peo·
ple such as Bruton when they
come by to yell at him.
"It's funny. You know, people
aren't even supposed to drink on
public property. So I don't know·
about all that champagne stuff,"
Cisek said.
Pralle agrees.
•First, 1 rarely see people pic-
nicking this far up on the street.
They usually do that around thft
comer,· she said.
Niederhaus said that while it
is a problem that Cisek has cut
into public property with his
shrubs and flowers, some of
Cisek's neighbors perhaps have
taken their complaints too far.
"Even if a twig is missing,
these people get upset,• he said.
"In this case, though, the home-
owner has overstepped his
bounds, and he will be asked to
make changes. And in the end,
the city will prevail. It was pre·
sumptuous on his part to think
he could do this. •
