ney representing the parents of a
4-year-old girl who was killed on a
playground last May said knowl-
edge of a previous accident at the
day-care center may have prevent-
ed the tragedy.
Attorney Federico Sayre alleged
Thursday that a traffic accident
involving a mail truck several
years ago was kept from ·parents
for fear they might pull their chil-
dren from classes.
No details about the alleged ·
accident have been released, and
whether it even happened has yet
to be confirmed by police or offi-
cials from the Southcoast Early
Childhood Leaming Center.
Rumors have circulated
throughout the neighborhood and
among parents about the purport-
ed accident since last May, when a
Santa Ana man drove his car onto
the playground, killing 4-year-old
Sierra So.to and 3-year-old Brandon
Wiener. Five others, including a
teacher's aide, were also injured.
The news surfaced a day after
the parents ol Sierra Soto filed a

W hen a~dience members r come backstage after a per-

question that they frequently ask,
"How does the puppet look so
tall?"
The marionettes, which are only
a couple feet high, seem to grow
over the course of the performance
-unW they are towering figures,
depicting people as large as life.
The answer, said GreU Aicher, ·
the theater's artistic director, is that
th e characters grow in the imagina-
tion of the audience.
"The illusion of the marionettes
is so strong that the people immedi-
ately forget that they're mari-

troupe who work on each opera are
skilled at casting a spell over their
audiences, that's because they've
had a lot of practice. The Salzbuxg
has been around since 1913, when
it was founded by Anton Aicher,
Gretl's grandfather. The traditions of
the puppeteering art have been
passed down through the Aicher
family ever since.
The technique is not something
Aicher takes lightly.
"The control ls like an instru-
ment you play,• she explained. • 1
train the puppeteers myself. 1 train
them for two years. and then at two
years 1 tell them, 'You have to learn
10 years, and then you can start as
a good puppeteer."'
Turning a lifeless marionette ~to
a vibrant Figaro or a winsome
Papageno takes some serious dex-
terity.
The figures are manipulated with
an instrument called an airplane
control, explained Jim Gamble, a
Los Angeles-based professiol'lal
puppeteer who first saw the
Salzburg perform in the 1960s.
Strings running from the Mwingtips"
of the control mechanism attach to
the head, while lines running from
another crossbar manipulate the
shoulders. Other strings connect to
the stomach and the figure's back.
There isn't any way for the pup-
pets to change facial expressions,
but the richness of the action that
the puppeteers manage to create is
remarkable, Gamble said.
"It's the same as if you were
watching an opera• by flesh-and-
blood performers, he added. "You
don't really see the individual faces,
but you see the grandiose aspects of
the performance.~
For people who have never wit-
nessed an expertly conducted show,
it can be a surprisingly moving
experience.
•1 was very impressed, 30 or 40
years ago, when I first saw the
action• of the puppets, Gamble
recalled. "I was just blown away
with what the marionettes could do.
I spent three or four years after that
trying to learn the action.•
The operas are performed with-
out supertitles and may be chal-
lenging viewing for children.

No uniform answer for navy pa,nts, white shirts Business
BRIEFS E's a simple question. Does the
conformity of unifomuty war-
ant a discussion of enonnity?
For the Newport-Mesa Unified·
School DiiStrlct, that is the dilemma
of the day.
The debate over school uni-
forms waxes and wanes over the
years. As always, I have few .
answers. But I do have 12 years of
experience with school uniforms,
to say nothing of a trunkful of
memories. Peter Buffo
Roosevelt High School was, and is,
directly a.cross the street from
Fordham. The school was tough
, and the kids were tougher.
Remember "BlackboardJun-
gle" with Glenn Ford and V,ic
Morrow? Worse. Vic Morrow
would have been a guidance
counselor at Roosevelt. Wearing a
coat and tie around Roosevelt kids
was like wearing a sandwich
board that said "Whack Me. t Like .

bundles of genes, born March 5,
were named Millie, Christa, Alex-
is, Carrel and Dotcom. Don't ask.
Th~ newborns squealed with joy,
took. one look at the nearest t~
tube and said, "Mom?"

cial officer.
My quest for knowledge, Which
obV!ousty failed, began sorne 45
years ago at St. Francis. of Rome in
the.Bronx, and continued at Ford.-
ham Prep, the preparatory school
. COMMENTS & CURIOSmES , So what are the uniform argu-
ments being bandied about today?
PPL Therapeutics is adamant
that they have no interest in, and
no plans to pursue, the cloning or
a human l?eing, which is illegal in
both the U.S. and the U.1:<. But as
I've said befQre, I don'l bUY. it.
EPL's story, and they're sticking ·
to it, i.!i that designer pigs are an
ideal ~ource of organ transplants
because piggy parts are a dose
match in size and structure to
human parts. No argwnent there.
Heart components from pigs have
been transplanted into humans for
years.
McGowan, who will be based in New-
port Beach, will oversee finance, account-
ing and capital markets activity for KoU. FtS
well as working to expan.d the es>mpany's
relationships in the capital ma!ltets arena.
Before joining Kall, McGowan \.'(as vice
prestdent and chief financial officer of
·Donahue Schriber Realty Group and
senior vice president of corporate finance
for Sectirity Pacific's real estate divtsion. at Fordham University. •
White shirt, navy blue trousers
and tie.
That was the uniform at St.
Francis.
At Fordham, it was coat and tie,
plain trousers -chinos yes, jeans
no.
By the way, they weren't called
"jeans• in those days. They were
"Levi's" or "dungarees.•
Do you know where the term
"dungarees" comes from? Neither
do I.
In grammar school (grade
school, elementary school, which
is it? I'm never sure), I think uni-
forms were, for the most part, a
good thing. You never w orried
about what to wear. You could
dress in about 18 seconds. U you
didn't sweat much (I didn't), they
were·very low maintenance.
nle ties could be a problem,
though. When you're in full-tilt
boogie across a schoolyard and
someone grabs you by the tie, it
really focuses the senses.
n es are a particular problem
for wimpy kids. Wimpy kids get
picked on enough by tough kids.
But with a tie on, they're pull toys.
SS~
Due to my smart mouth, I never
had much trouble with either the
wimpy kids or the tough kids.
But my terribly witty outbursts
bad a much different effect on the
Irish nuns who guided my early
developrn,ent.
Sister Mary Benigna had this
wonderful way of playing with
your tie as she explained how
deeply disappointed she was with
your behavior. Pretending to
straighten it, she'd pull the knot
tighter and tighter until your voice
got real squeaky and your face
began to glow.
For the girls, it was navy blue
pleated skirts, white blouses and a
big, floppy bow tie. I'm sure
they're called something other
than big, floppy bow ties, but you
get the point.
I have very little to. declare
about whether uniforms are a
good or bad idea for girls. There
were girls at St. Francis, but we
rarely saw them.
Even recess and lunch were
separated by gender. By the time I
got to Fordham, the unifonn thing
was neither here nor there. It just
was.
The onl¥ real problem were the
kid~ from Rooseve~t. 'Df eodore
, I
The first is that uniforms, by
extracting the fashion distrliction,
promote a quieter, ·more subdued
learning envirop.ment.
Hmm, maybe. All I know is that
I caused more trouble in school
than a computer virus at the Pen-
tago~. and I didn't particularly
care what I was wearing.
Another argument is that uni-
forms, by eliminating the trap-
pings of social class, are a great
equalizer. I have my doubts, but I
can't say for sure.
There were no rich kids at St.
Francis, and no one would dare
act like one. You could get away '
with a lot of things in my neigh-
borhood, but pretense wasn't one
of them.
Another argument is that
school kids who wear urriforms are
smarter. On this one I can give you
a definite answer based on years
of experience -"no."
, All in all, based more on nostal-
gia than anything else, I like the
idea of ~orms, except for sweaty
kids.
Speaking of uniformity, what's
small and pink and only 10 days
old? The Six Llttle Pigs, of course.
PPL Therapeutics, the Scottish
company that brought us Dolly the
cloned sheep three years ago,
But il piggy parts are a good fit,

LIBRARY

However, the allegat\ons ot
financial rrtlsmanagement
were serious enough for library
trustees to threaten to sever
ties with their main fund-rcus.
ing body.
· The library, perhaps Lhe
city's greatest monument to a
collective community effort,
had unwittingly become a box-
ing ring showcasing dn
increasingly heated match
The fight -pitting former aty
politicians and other high-pro·
file residents -became so
embarrassing that the Ctl)
Council was finally forced to
step in at the end of January to
pull the two entities apart.
The dispute over control or
the foundabon's savings had
been festenng for more than d
year before tt surfaced publlcl}
last fall.
While the foundalton
attempted to build an endow·
ment fund to help the librdf\
during bad financial times, th<'
trustees rejected the idea and
wanted the $1.5 million for
more immediate uses. Among
other things, the trustees also
demanded clearer financittl
reporting and a reduction m
the foundation's operatiny
costs.
The relationship between
the two is symbiotic. While the>
foll{idation raises money for
the library, the board deode!.
how the dollars are spent
The lingering tug of war
over the Distinguished Speak-
er Series ties in directly w1lh
the disputed operating ca.ts
lhlstees claim the costs were
anywhere from 50% to 70~u of
the money the foundation
raised. A large chunk of what
the trustees considered operat-
ing costs, however, was the
award-winning series, which
has featwed such noted
speakers as sociaJ acbVlSt
Susan Faludi and TV journalist
Tom Brokaw.
Still, relations appear to be
better than they were two
months ago, when frustrations
escalated to such a level thdl
the trustees sent a letter to th<'
foundation demanding that
unJess foundation members
signed a cooperating agree-
ment. they would have to
move out of the bbrd!Y office
and tum over the endowment
fund. It was this event that
caused Councilwoman Norma
Glover to ask the dty attorney
to intervene.
ln the end, after studying
the situation, City Attorney
Bob Burnham temporarily
capped the dispute when he
pointed out that the trustees
could not control the founda-
tion and did not have exclusive
rights to the bbrary's name.
The foundation must
remain legally independent of
the trustees in order to operate
as a private, nonprofit organi-
zation, Burnham said . There-
fore, the trustees could not
gain the financial control they
sought.

At least two out-of-state coaches
in the event wish their squads could
stay longer and have a good time in
Newport Beach, but a tight schedule
will send most back home Sunday.
For top individuals, the event also
serves as a key ingredient to gain
official status on the National High
School All-American Team, the
foundation Mang began in 1998 to
recognize the country's best high
school players and generate positive
attention to high school tennis.
A national event featuring girls is
scheduled for October, with the final
at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet
Club.
Several locations within the city
are hosting sites, induding head-
quarters Palisades Tennis Club,
where the championship final will
be played Saturday at 6 p.m.
Different than the format used in
CIF Southern Section team tennis,
the Pavilions National will have six
singles and three doubles matches
in eight-game pro sets. A total of
nine points are available per match.
From small, private schools on
the East Coast like 206-year-old
Chesire Academy to large West
Coast public powers like 'Clovis
West of Fresno, the invitational
orchestrated by Mang could provide
a platform ror high school tennis
never before seen on the national
landscape.
•1n all of my (30) years coaching,
this will be the first time tennis has a
real, true national invitational,· said
Mang, a Balboa Island resident and
a longtime former CIF Southern
Section and Ojai Valley Tennis
Tournament seedings official.
•What (prep) sporting event is
there, where you can see the top
players in the United States?"
ln the 16-team field, Peninsula is
seeded first, followed by the host
Sea Kings, the defending CIF Divi-
sion I champions, No. 3 Cherry
Creek of Englewood, Colo., and No.
4 Dr. Michael Krop of Miami, Fla.
Peninsula, which has been
ranked nationally for three straight
years, induding top-five spots the
last two seasons, was created in
