In which Daily Pilot education reporter
Danette Goulet visits a campus within the
Newport-Mesa school district and writes
about her experience.
Young ~ts study master works,

had more freedom to make their
artwork unique.
They could add as many doors
and windows as they wished. They
could add window boxes and signs.
Students asked U they could make
some buildings shorter and others
taller and wondered how they
could make an alley or a mailbox. G one are the days of school·
children drawing and paint·
ing random, unintentionally
abstract artwork while making
balls with rubber cement.
The atmosphere in f:astbluff Ele-
mentary School's art room is far
from the paint-splattered chaos that
I remember.
Bright sunlight streamed into the
tidy art room, where fourth-graders
sat with pen<;ils poised above clean,
white paper and clear plastic rulers.
The walls were covered with
groupings of impressive student
artwork. There were Modigliani-
style self-portraits done in watercol·
ors, and brightly colored tissue col·
!ages of lady bugs and inchworms
fashioned after that of Eric Carle, a
children's illustrator.
But all eyes were focused on art
teacher Debi Haymond, who stood
in front of the day's impeccably
neat lesson plan. .
Haymond meets with students
every other week for an hour and a
half. During the last 10 years, she
has developed a style of teaching in
which each lesson incorporates a
master's work and an art technique.
On the white board behind her
there was a print of a city street in
Parts painted by French artist Mau-
rice Utrillo. Above that were three
sketches demonstrating the steps to
creating a similar scene.
Haymond gave the students a
brief history of Utrillo and his work
before jumping into an explanation
of his techniques.
She had students place a hori· ·
zontal line just below the middle of
the paper, instead of near the bo~
tom, where young artists are prone
to putting it. ,
The teacher explained perspec-
tive and how the horizon would
shift if they were sitting in a tree as
opposed to sitting on the ground.
The next key ingredient was cre-
ating a vanishing point where the
street curved out of sight.
The concept of the curving street
and the different perspective of the
shops along the street was very
complex for the fourth-graders.
Step by step, she took the students
through the beginning stages -
insisting that every line be just so.
At first, it seemed to stifle the
children. But as the lesson pro·
gressed and the skeleton of the
drawing was constructed, students
One table of students, which 1
dubbed the •coffee-talk• group,
focused on making their prominent
building a Starbucks or a Diedrlch's.
Another group wanted to stay with
the Pans theme and insisted on
French names on all of their bwld-
ings. A third was interested in win·
dow boxes and awnings.
So what started out as a very
rigid lesson relaxed into creativity.
Still, it was far more advanced
than the elementary school art
taught years ago.
Today, children are taught more
at a younger age. Teachers expect
more of them and I'd say they are
living up lo those expectations.

EDUCATIONALLY SPEAKING
We must teach
.kids to believe
in themselves
I went to a talk recently on how the
educational system has been com-
promised by society's concern that
kids have high self-esteem.
My kids went through that pendu·
lum swing, when the elementary
schools even had.Project Self-Esteem.
The main focus was to learn how to
compliment yourself and others.
Then, the school started giving out a
lot more awards. The idea was to
ensure that every student got an
award by the end of the school year.
Once the students figured that out.
the awards lost their meaning.
Personally, I don't think additional
awards given to everyone do much to
improve self-esteem. Insincere com-
pliments from a teacher have the
same effect. So, if we tailor the edu~a
tional system in an effort to raise self-
esteem, we fitted the students with
the wrong suit.
I think we should recognize and
praise students for accomplishments
that are benchmarks of achievement
and perseverance. At my children's
school. the students who have a 4 .0
grade-point average for two semes-
ters in a row have their pictures dis-
played on the Honor Wall. The Honor
Wall signllies each student's year's
worth of time and effort to reach this
pinnacle.
In my opinion. schools should work
to provide tutors and prog'rams to
help kids.get on the Honor Wall. This
will work better than pushing them
through the educational conveyor
belt, without e nsuring that they
understand each subject before they
face a more advanced one.
Kids need to be convinced that if
they work hard in school, the reward
will be waiting for them at the end of
12th grade. lf each student puts in the
time and effort, a college or technical
education is his or hers for the asking.
Some students get derailed: they
think they must be stupid because
they flunk the ir tests. We have to con·
vince them the problem isn't with
their brain -it is with their effort.
· Erin Gruwell, a product of New-
port-Mesa schools, was the inspira-
tion that convinced 150 •at-rtsk• kids
they were smart and they could suc-
ceed.
Kids from families that never bad
a member graduate from high school
are now entrenched in colleges
throughout the nation. These same
students wrote a book that you need
to read~ ''The Freedom Writers
Diary,• by the Freedom Writers with
Gruwell.
Gruwell started her career at Long
Beach Wilson High School. teaching
at-risk kids freshman English. She
taught English to the same students
for the next four years.
Once sh e found out how disenfran-
chised the kids felt, she threw out the
standard lessons and the class began
reading books by teenagers who bad
struggled. Each student kept a jour·
nal during that four-year period, and
"The Freedom Writers Diary• is a
compilation of excerpts from those
journals.
I hope that Gruwell and the Free-
dom Writers will come to talk lo the
kids in our district. I hope they can
convince our kids to express frustro-
tioo wlth a pen rather than a gun. 1
dreem that our students will see they
can be aucceesful by virtue of their
own hard work.
When I wu a kid, I reed all of the
Horatio Alger stories, until I was con-
vinced that it was poaible for me to
be successful. The Freedom Writers
are the Horatio Alger of today.
True self-esteem comet from
believing in younelf. Once you ..
believe, no one can take it away. If
you don't believe in younelf, no one
can give it to you. There II no magic
lelf-esteem award.

T he Daily Pilot pom~ out
the solubon to Newport
Beach residents' airport
concerns (MTime for a new look al
El Toro,• March 9). It says,
•Newport Beach leaders need to
strike a deal with \heir South
County enemies: If you help us
freeze·John Wayn e in its current
state, we'll stop our push for an
airport at El Toro."
Don't call South County "ene-
mies"; we are offering that
"deal. H
First of all, we wrote Measure
F to require a two-thirds vote of
the people before' the county
could:
• Increase the operation of any
existing civilian airport beyond its
current legally permissible and
authorized level of operations.
• Affect the physical expdllSion
of the facilibes of any exisbng
civilian arrport beyond the current
· and legally authorizcd'!ize. ·
• Make any expan ion or
change in operabons at any exist·
ing airport. Measure P eHecllvely
prevents a John Wayne expansion.

So why is the Newport Beach
City Council spending taxpayers'
money on a lawsuit to overturn
Measure F1
The 2-to-1 win for Measure F
says El Toro will not be built,
because the people will not allow
it. The most recent polls by UCI
and Cal State Fullerton show
opposition to El Toro airport
exceeding support, which is
dwindling. And Newport Beach
Congressman Christopher Cox's
47th District voted 74.3% in favor
of Measure F.
The alternative to building El
Toro airport need not be expan-
sion of John Wayne, unless the •
Newport Beach strategy back-
fires. Talk of John Wayne dou-
bling or tripling comes only from
El Toro promoters. It's their
"boogeyman• to scare residents
to their pro-airport side.
Supervisor Thomas W. Wilson
tried to take John Wayne expan-
sion off the table, but the New-
port Beach City Council askoo
the county to leave it on.
Realistically, there is little need
for increased airport capacity m

'Th.is is no justificaboo for dou-

Orange County is expected to
add only 385.000 men, women

the county proposes to expand

Parents find golf tournament a great

DAILY PILOT
N EWPORT BEACH -Little Dusty Brartdom
didn't fully understand why everyone was

As Dusty cruised along the course Monday at

Dusty, 1, who suffers from DMD, took the day
off from school at Carden Hall in Newport Beach
to hang out with his buddy and about 120 other

so we planned this golf tournament,• said Calh.
·We had never organized anything before.
"Duchenne is one of 42 different types of
muscular dystrophy and it only affects boys. It is a
fatal disease and children usually survive into their

and it affects their heart. They just die. It affects

The event featured an Australian themed

tournament with the ·surttones• band as

and have lived in Newport Bea.ch for five years.
"We're here to stay," said Neil Brandom. a real

Newport Beech is the kind of place where you like
to stay and raise a family.•
The Brandoms, after seeing their oldest son
having trouble running and climbing stairs, were
twice told by doctors that Dusty was slow
developing and would grow out of his physical
shortcomings. But when their 5-year-oki son, Luke,
began doing things Dusty was wiable to do, they
insisted on further testing and found out lt was DMD.

NEWPO RT BEACH _
After an off-season w he re
Newport Harbor Higb's boys
tennis coach Richard Berman
worried if he would have a
team or not, 40 playe rs
show.ed up for tryouts.
One of the bng htest new-
comers for Newport is sopho-
more N{ck Kuhle, a transfer
from Ne vada who 1s the
. Sailors' No. 1 singles playe r.
Ranked in\he top fiµe in his
age group at Nevada, Kuhle
is also the grandson of John
· Wa'fn.e .
While his grandfather was
.his own man, Kuhle has been
impressionable, helping tus
talent grow.
"He's super-atte ntive,·
Berman said. •He loves to be
coached."
·Another newcomer. fresh-
man Brandon Lu!ty, is New-
port's No. 2 singles player. A
top football playe r on lhe
freshman team, Lufty is big,
but he is d eceptively qwck
"He's got quick moves and
great hands,• Berman said
The No. 3 singles player is
sophomore En c Allione, a for-
mer member of the sailing
team who decided to concen-
trate on tennis . Although
inconsistent, he can be Ne w-
port's best player when he's
peaking.
Sophomore Charbe Hirst 1s
a solid player wh o rotates mto
the singles b.neup.
Newport's No. 1 doubles
squ ad of Ryan Curry and Col-
in Duncan is where all the
Sailors' yea rs of WlSdom
resides. Curry 1s Newport's
learn cap tain.
·1 was really sic k for one
month," Bennan said. "While
I was out. he organized prac-
tice and took everytlung upon
lumsel! .•
While Curry is the team
captain, he and Duncan share
that role and have developed
a good rapport with each oth-

Their mall located in Los Alamitos, is
designed to resemble an original American

you step inro the mall you fed as though
you've stepped back into cimc. The enrirc
front counter atta is sr11fFcd full of original

There's a wood burning stove char always

As you travel throughout the I 00 plw

offers a qualiry product. Each dealer mUSt

inventory can be made up of unique,
unusual decorating icems. The dealers arc
not allowed ro sell g~ sale:. junk or carry
new oollccribles like Beanie Babics or fut

follow~ st.rict guidelines the srore has
maintained a higher qualiry level of
merchandise than the average antique mall.
Eckert's has acrracced a large dientcle of
retail customers, collectors and anrique
dealers as well as incerior decorators,
