But Newport Beach firefighters who have responded to calls in the airport area and Santa Ana Heights since late January from a base comprised of a cou- ple of rooms at the Radisson Hotel will get back a kitchen and gym equipment once a new -though still temporary - fire station is set up in the.neighborhood. City and Orange County officials are getting close to signing off on a two-year ' lease agreement for land near Bristol Street. Council members approved the $1 a year lease at their meeting Tuesday. While the agreement sWl must be reviewed by lawyers, the county's Board of Supervisors is expected lo approve the lease al its meeting Tuesday. The station, which will inc-lude a dou· ble-wide trailer where firefi~hters can eat, sleep and stay while on duty, as well as a canopy or shell for the fire engine, could be set up as early as next week, city officials said. The makeshift hotel station was estab- lished after the county's fire station near the airport was damaged by fire in December and taken out of service. The closure caused response times to exceed a five-minute response time goal. Wh1le the proposed annexation of Santa Ana Heights -expected to hap- pen by early 2002 -would have brought a city fire station Lo the area at a future date anyway, city officials decided to go ahead and set up services now. At their Feb. 13 meeting. counctl members decid- ed to hire nine new firefighters and spend about $608,860 on the temporary station. · Initial talks about leasing a section of a parking lot fell through because the people SEE FIRE PAGE 8 . In this introduction to modem feminism, Bonnie Anderson reveals how women in the U.S. and abroad banded together at the height of the Victorian era to advocate political, social and econom- ic equality with men. Without e -maiJ, fruces and modem transportation, this was no easy task. Adding language baniers and cul- tural mores that kept women subjugated makes it all the more impressive. Ander- son's portraits of champions who organized unions, pub- lished newspapers and advanced then-radical notions is inspiring stuff fo r modem feminists. Fast forward to 1902, when Susan B. Anthony wrote a letter to her friend Elizabeth Stanton, lauding women's newly obtained rights to attend college and speak in public. Anthony also lamented the faiJure to gain "the suffrage." PBS favorites Ken Bums and Geoffrey Ward tell the story of the two great suf- fragettes in "Not tor Our- selves Alone." The dual biography traces the 50- year alliance between two women who spearheaded the movement for equaJ vot- ing rights. In this mtroduction to modem ferrunism. Bonnie Anderson reveals how women in the U.S. and abroad banded together at the height of the Victonan era to advocate political, social and econom- ic equality with men. Without e-mail, Cruces and modem transportation, this was no easy task. Adding language barriers and cul- tural mores that kept women subjugated makes it all the more impressive. Ander- son 's portraits of champions w ho organized unions, pub- lished newspapers and advanced then-radical notions is inspiring stuff for modem feminists. Fast forward to 1902, when Susan ·B. Anthony wrote a letter to her friend El;,iabeth Stanton.·· lauding women's newly obtained rights to attend college and speak in public. Anthony dlso lamented the failure to gain •the suffrage.~ PBS favorites Ken Bums and Geoffrey Ward tell the story ol the two great suf- fragettes in "Not for Our- selves AJone." The dual biography traces the 50- year alliance between two women who spearheaded the movement for equal vot- ing rights. Alumni award surprises a Vanguard recipient Rosemary Jackson, the director of alumni services for Vanguard Universi- ty, arrived at the school's annual alum- ni awards luncheon ready fo award this year's honoree. No one told her that this year's honoree was hersell. Unknown to Jackson, the alumni association board had voted to honor her as the 2001 Alumnus of the Year. They were able to keep it from her through an elaborate hoax until the re·al announcement at last month's lun- cheon. Jackson began her career at Van- guard University on May 21, 1965, as the 1eC?etary for the president of what wu then Southam califomla Bible College. She would serve three presi- dents before lhe wu 'elected as the ~or of the college'• new alwn- lli Otfiat, which WU introduced in October 1979. It wu UHM when Jack- aon, herself, became an alumnus of Southern California College with a degree in business. In two decades since the alumni office was established under Jackson's leadership, the office baa expandttd immensely. Donor support bas increased from $17,000 to $356,000 in 2000, and the alumni database ha.s grown from 1,479 names to well over 12,000. Jackson, however, does not take all of the credit. • 1t is the alumni who have really made our association such a success - how can I be rewarded for doing what I most enjoy,· she said. Luckily, we'll never know.• Personality pro.files Hokanson, largely recog- nized as the group's social secretary, was asked to relate some insights into the charac- ter of the teammates who made up the primary playing rotation. • On McDanlels, who aver- aged 8.8 points per game: "I think Paul was the leader. He was quiet in the way he led, but everyone looked up to him. He was another guy who went out of his way to make sure everyone would get together and do things oU th~ court. "Basketball-wise, he was our best athlete. He had speed, strength, the whole package. It was unport.ant to have that from our point guard." • On Haas, a 6· 1 shooting guard who averaged 13.3 points, including career-high 32 in the SoCal regional opener at San Diego Section champion Ramona and 27 in the state title game: •He was our ego, the spice of our team. He was never afraid to shoot with the pressure on. Love him or hate him, he brought the kind of confidence every good team needs.• • On Fuerbringer, a 6-5 junior center who averaged 16.2 points and went on to earn .. , 12 Fremont Wtihlngton 72 All-ClF honors and become an Orange County All-Star: "I would say he was our glue, because he was so consistent. I don't ever remember a time when he got disciplined for not showing up to play. When the pressure was on, he never let off the gas. He also had a lot of athletic ability.• • On Ly, a slashing 5-11 for· ward who averaged 12.5 points and whose quickness made him a valuable defend- er: "He was pure energy. He didn't speak up a lot, but he just never got tued. Hts skills came a long way in high school and he matured late in his career He's the one guy who probably still plays the most basketball and has the most game. He's a freak of nature who will probably be running Cl!C'les around other guys when he's 60. • • On Hammond, who aver- aged 5.0 points: "He had a big body and he a lways played hard . He was physical inside and we needed that. He was never concerned about how man y points he scored, which is the kind of guy every team needs. Coach O'Brien was redlly good about keeping guys like Tor- rey going by giving them a lot of poslbve feedback. (O'Brien) was as happy for a guy who took three ch arges, as he was for the guy who was filling It up.• • On himse U, who led the bench brigade: •t took pride in D-ing up. Whether I want- ed to score or not, I knew con- Fuerbringer went on to become a four-time volleyball All·American at Stanford, where he won one national championship and wound up becoming the all-time kills leader for the Cardinal. He has played profession- ally on the beach, as well as indoors and currently is play· ing indoors in Spain, after two seasons in Vienna, Austria. Leonard accepted a tennis scholarship to Texas Ch.rtstlan University and later played professionally on the satellite tour. Beyond athletics, Ham- mond is currently finishing dental school at Loma Unda University. McDaniels obtained a degree ln finance from USP, while Haas graduated from Arizona and Hokanson, a sales representative for a large pharmaceutical compa- ny, earned a law degree from UCSB. Ly is working with the dis· abled, according to Hokan- son, who also said Leonard has owned his own business since hanging up his racquet. O'Brien said he still hears from his fonner players peri- odically and has yet_ to hear anytlung but good news. Whether another New- port-Mesa high school team makes similar news on the court, remains to be seen. But, thanks to the 1990-91 Estancia Eagles, March 16 should always remain an anniversary date to remem· ber.
