There was the person who worked there first, and then the first with a degree. and then the first to have trained at a Library service school1 etc. So we're going with Dorothea Wilson Sheely -a Librarian who could be con- Looki~s BACK sidered the best known, according to Melissa Adams from the Newport Beach Central Library. Sheely worked in the library for exactly 30 years. from 1947 through 1977, and left her mark on those who knew her. LaDonna Kienitz, the conununity services director and city librarian for New- port Beqch, remembers learning about the history of the Library from Sheely when she first started work- ing. Sheely had already retired but was known for sticking around and wanti- ng to keep up on Library happerungs. "I used to meet with her quite often," Kienitz said . "She was JUSt dedicated to the Newport Beach Library.'' Sheely-was tall-and .slen- der, talkallve and outgoing, her friend remembers. She used to tell stories about the Balboa brctnch of the library and how people would hang out there on Saturday nights because there wdsn"l much else to do. The Oregon native lived in Los Angeles during part of her chlldhood and enjoyed -visiting libraries even as a young girl, according to a recorded oral histoiy she did with Shirley E. Stephenson through Cal State University, Fullerton's Ornl History Program. She was drawn to the local librarian there -her name was Christine Watson Dou- glas. She read books for thetr summer reading pro- gram and wrote book reports for each of them. MARTIN CONTINUED FROM 1 quickly and easily. •The whole walking thing,• as she puts it. took some getting used to. Yes, she has her bad days, but Martin's convinced the horrible boating accident that left her in this state was a test. Today, she says she is a bet- ter person. The 39-year-old Corona del Mar resident notices it's a pretty day outside and is fortunate to have a •wonder- ful" family and community. Even her cat, Harley. makes We easier for her. The feline knows the difference between a phone ring and a fax ring and jumps off the bed to fetch an incoming fax and deliver it to her feet. · She and sister Jenni Martin · of Sacramento laugh a lot -to get through the •traumas and dramas" and because they both have a ·warped sense of humor.· Her boyfriend is Myles Elsmg, whom she considered handsome when he lived next door to her stepmom when they were kids. And Martin's business, Art for the Soul, has worked won- ders for her own soul. "So I don't let this keep me down,• she said, gesturing to her legs. Though her family expect- ed her to be resilient, they're unpressed. "It's hard to believe she's this OK." said Jenni Martin, 43. On Newport Harbor, seven Labor Day weekends ago, on the "wrong harbor, wrong day, wrong boat. wrong wave,• Valtnda Martin survived a freak boab.ng accident that broke her back and rendered her para- lyzed. She'd rather not go into more detail, but she's gone through the why-me's and offers this answer: "That bad things happen to good people. There tS no rhyme or reason for the way things happen. It just is what it is.· She tells. it like it IS, too. About her legs, she says, "I kinda like to think that they're asleep. That's my way of being lander to myself. • About being in a wheelchair, or ·permanently sitting," she says, "I'm just short. I'm still a person.· About her effect on others, she admits, "People use me as their gage. I'm almost their worst nightmare. They see me. U I'm OK and I'm oippled, how can bills, lads, etc ... be so bad? "I don't have as much time as I used to, so 1 get to the pomt. • Martin said. "That's one thing that's frustrating about being in a wheelchair -everything in my tile takes me longer. So I don't waste time.· VALIHDA'S BOX l..J.fe was the best she'd ever had it when the accident hap- pened, Martin said. She was living in Los Angeles, work- ing in women's clothing, dating and doing the fun (this doesn't mean wild, she insists), single woman's thing. "In my 20's, I was wtth the same man, so I had just begun really getting to know me,• Martin said .I And then in one afternoon, tile changed . She lived with her sister for nine months irrunediately dfler leaving the hospital. Jenm Martin, who specializes m pro- fessional expert witness work in fraud and personal injury cases, had her entire house transformed with hand ramps, low ered counte~. gutted sinks and other accommodations. She got Martin a car -a green Mustang convertible adjusted with hand controls -and encouraged her to be inde- pendent. "We'd send her on errands to do things -going shopping. getting in and out of the CdI and going to the personal train- er so she could get strong.· Jenru Martin said. ·we took kind or a no-nonsense approach.· Val.tnda Martin says her sis- ter is the reason she's not in the "rubber room" today. After a couple years, reality stepped m. "You jump up and say. OK this tS the way it's gonna be. You don't have much of a choice. You either get up and do that. .. or die inside/ Martin said. Its piquant leaves perk up the flavor of salsas and salads. Dill is the perfect com- paruon for hsh, potatoes and sauces. C hopped dill 1s delicious when added to fresh vegetable salads. His- torically, dlll was taken for upset stomachs and as a tranquilizer. Nasturtiums are a great addition to an herb garden for their color and interest- ing leaves. Nasturtiums will spill over the edge of a con- tainer, crawl out of a win- dow box or attempt to defy the boundaries of your gar- den. The flowers range m colors from creamy yellow to bnght orange. They have a peppery flavor. Add the flowers to a salad or use them as an edible garrush. Tender nasturttum seeds can be pickled when they are green and used W<e capers. Tarragon has a distinctive savory navor, and no herb collection should be without it. Use fresh chopped tar- ragon with chicken, fish and eggs. Add fresh tarragon to beama1se sauce or mak e tarragon vinegar by steep- ing the fresh herb in white wine vinegar and use it for making French dressing. Peppermint is a great addition for frwt salads, summer drinks and sorbets. Its medicinal values have been appreciated for hun- dreds of years. The oil extracted from the plant contains menthol. Hot pep- pemunt tea can help wtth indlgesbon and as a pick- me-up. It also improves the appetite. Rosemary can be used with all meats, stuffing and potatoes. Rosemary has been used for thousands of years. The Greeks and Romans would twine rose- mary in their hair in the belief that it would help improve their memory and- qulcken their minds. Sage is a multipurpose herb that dresses up poultry, pork, vegetables and sauces. It is an ideal con· tainer plant and it's fuzzy gray-green leaves and soft purple flowers are as beau- tiful as they are practical. Place whole sage leaves unr;ter the skin of a turkey -before you put it in the oven. Sage and poultry are a perfect combination. Herbs are the ultimate blend of form and function. Chives have a purple ball· shaped flower that towers over its long hollow leaves. Basil is a beautiful green, and 1f you plnch back the leaves regularly, It becomes denter and bushier. Newport Beach needs more affordable housing I ~he coming weeks, New- port Beach officials will begin the long, detd1led and at times tedious process of bringing m ore afford- able housing to the city. It is far from the most glam- orous part of their jobs. It involves calculating percent- ages of "housing units/ putting into place sped.fie programs to encourage developers to build low-income housing and even determining what "low- income • means. • But tt will be among their most important jobs, and poten- tially among their most out- standing legacies because of a simple fact of life: Everybody grows old. City off:idals have acknowl- edged that Newport Beach's increasing senior population - already a fourth of resJdents - is'dema.ndtng more affordable housing be built. She was far from a newcom- er to the city, having lived in that two-bedroom apartment for almost 30 years. Over that span, her rent had cllmbed from $275 to $1,160. H's/oration, and the maste r plan \\ill be hopefully 80% cnmpfl>ted hy then. L ibby Cowan was reelect- ed to the Costa Mesa City Council in the Nov. 7 election and in Decem~ ber, her.fellow council members named 'her mayor. When she took over the position, Cowan couldn't have foreseen some chal- lenges the council would fa~e. In the election, the council lost two members -Joe Erickson and H eather Somers -anp gained two more m rookies ChriS"Steel and Karen Robinson. Alter nine unsuc- cessful campaigns for City Council, Steel made the cut while Robinson succeeded on her first try. Both are still learning the ropes while the overall council -comprised of varying viewpoints -is learning how to make things work. O n Feb. 5, the council appointed new commissioners, but not without controversy. Several abstentions by Robinson led to tie votes. Later, it WdS revealed that, according to a forgotten 1972 city ordinance, abstenl.Jons made without conflicts of interest count as yes votes. So, some of the Feb. 5 appointments may not have occurred had Robin- son cast her votes. The mayor discussed this and more when she sat down with Daily Pilot Assistant City Editor James Meler last week. What are some of your priorities and goals as mayorf I'm very tnterested m expanding the citizen mvolvement process. It Jed to the esldbbshment of the Fairview Friends Committee, which is going to sell the 1ded and concept of the mas- ter pldn to the community. We tut the ground running, and it's working great. I worked to establish the group Lhat's studying the !Jbrary needs ba~ed on d library needs assessment done JOtnUy with the library founda- llon dnd the aty last year. That's another exc1ung group. I think we'll bnng some good, solld recommenda- tions back to the city and see what we ought to do with our libraries. I have a pnonty of dotng what we can. a~ the aty of Costa Mesa, to extend the restricbons at John Wayne !Airport! We don't have a legal standmg with that because we are not part of the setUement agreement, but there are things we can do to pro- tect our conunumty. Survival -getting lhrough the year as mayor. My other big goal that I'd Llke to see by the tune I firush my four-year council term 1s that Fauview Park will be well into its restoral1on, and the mdster plan wtll be hopefully 80°/,, completed bY. then Wlll you enforce the 30-minute rule for public comment at the City CouncU meetings, and ls there any way to shorten those meetlngsf Well. the City Council members had a real good discussion at our study session on what we should do, because very often the public com- ment portion is in fact pushing the bnsiness of the city to later hours We certainly believe in providing 30 nun- utes for everyone. These are items that are not on the agenda. I will not have a countdown clock running, but if we get through 10 or 11 people and it seems that we've gone 30 minutes and we still have several more people to go, I'll t1'>k ITlY ft•ll<M < ouncLI .ml>m- bers whdt they'd hk1· to do -either cut 1t off and extend It t<1 the encl of the meeung or hm.,h them.
