The descen- dants of those neighbors, by the way, are what we call •waiters• in Paris today. In more recent times, French children go to great lengths on April 1 to secretly tape a paper fish onto their friends' backs. When the vic- tim discovers the trick, every- one yells •pof.sson d'Avril!• which means, •Poison Advil." Just kidding. It means •April Fish.· Get it? For the past few years, ·Discover• maga- zine, a science journal, has • run a fa.1£, but very straight• faced, story on or around April 1. Last year's hoax was about •Albert Manque, • a French physicist. Physicists spend a lot of time thinking deep thoughts about subatomic particles • that might reveal the build- ing blocks of the universe. More than a few Nobel Prizes have been awarded to researchers who have discov- ered unimaginably small par- ticles, which always seem to get odd names like "gluon· or •muon.• The problem is, they are very bard to detect and can only be captured for a few fnil- lionths of a second. Supposect. ly, Manque and his coll~gues discovered an extraordinarily fundamental particle. Unlike gluon and muon, which are infinitesimally t small, the Manque particle was about the size of a bowl- ing ball. tn fact, it shattered a nearby computer screen when it burst out of the device that captured it. Given ·that we're dealing with pbysldsts here, the hoax did- n't last long. But holidays and "customs are rarely bound by logic, and occasionally, are just plain nuts. J dteph's Day in March is a up. Still no footbridge for School • Parents press local government and other officials for safe access to school at recent meeting. Danette Goulet DAILY PILOT NEWPORT COAST Frustrated residents hit another brick wall Wednes- day night m the latest attempt to provtde their chil- dren with safe access to a new elementary school. Newport Coast Elemen-• tary School, which is sched- uled lo open in the fall with 300 students, sits on the cor- ner of Newport Coast Drive -a six-lane highway willi a speed limit or 55 mph -and Park Ridge Road -a 40-mph road with a steep incline. Par- ents are hghtlng to have a pedestrian bridge built near the school, saying they are ter- rified that a child crossing the busy highway will be struck by a speeding car. Their new round of pleas were met with no more suc- cess than those of past months. said Dana Schonwit, Newport Coast Elementary PTA vice president Sitting opposite Newport Coast residents were mem· bers of the Newport-Mesa Unified School Distnct and Board or Education, Orange County traffic engineers, and representatives from the city of Newpbrt Beach , Supervisor Tom Wilson's office and the Irvine Co. ·1 am Just amazed that these are the people who chose the s1le and we have to tell them that there's a safety issue. They master-planned everything,· Schonwtt said. The school district bas agreed to bus all students liv- ing on the west side or New- port Coast Drive, but district bffidals said they can take no other action at this time. "That's currently the only junsd1cbon we have.· said school board president Dana Black. ·we want to support the commuruty and parents any way we can. That's why we are taking a proactive stance with buses because that's the only th.mg within our ability to do.• Allho\lgh busing does ease parents' minds, th ey feel the footbndge will be necessary because cluldren will still go to the school dunng afternoons and weel<ends, when they can't be bused. Overall, residents said they were d.Jscouraged with the responses from the school district, county and the lrvllle Co. When the county's traffic department conducted a study months ago, they reduced the speed limit on Newport Coast Dnve from 60 to 55 mph and set a speed IJ.mjt of 40 mph on the previ- ously wunarked Park Ridge Road -a small concession, residents said at the time. Residents fear a traffic study conducted now will not reflect the true nature of the community when the school opens. With a commercial shop- ping center being built across Newport ~oast Drive, a Marriott resort going up nearby and Sage Hill High School near completion, res- idents said the commuruty is only 40% complete. County trafhc engineer lgnaoo Ochoa said public mput is always considered, but decisions are. based pri- marily on a state manual. Ochoa said he hopes to have a report to the county's traffic committee by May 18. "lt's ju.st QOOl9 to end up being a waiting game wm1 ~ gets hurt.. Sdlmwit said . Tony AttobeUI DAILY PILOT _=A HILLS IOYS YUCK That just about summed up the emotional state. of Newport Harbor High boys track and field coach Bim Barry following the Sailors' 77-55 Sea View League win over host Laguna Hills Thursday. "Needless to say, I'm much more relaxed now than• I was earlier," Barry said after the meet. " The meet certainly didn't start out the way we would have wanted it." What Barry was referring to was the Sailors (3-0. 2-0 in league) mis- handling a baton pass in the 400-meter relay and then watching senior hW'dler/sprinter Trevor Jones take a nasty tumble in the 110 high hW'dles. After scraping the s~nd hurdle, Jones fought back to take the lead, but tripped over the next-to-last hurdle and was sent sprawling to the ground. "There was a lot of implications riding on that spill,• Barry said. •we didn't know at the time if he was hurt, bow bad be was hurt, if be could ~any more today or even beyond today. Fortunately, be was just scraped up and he'll be fine." Jones had some scrapes and cuts on bis hand, knee and shoulder, but pressed on anyway, eventually win- ning the 100 (11.0), 200 (22.3). •1 was being told that tbe hurdles were not the same height and basi· cally, I almost felt like it was the first time I'd ever ran the event before,• Jones said with .,a laugh afterward. With the meet still up for grabs, Newport t~lf control with a sweep in the di5cus. by ,seniors Nathan Caldwell· (142-:l)(SteVe Wukawitz (133-6) and Aaron Roberts (128-4). "That was huge for us,• Barry said. •That really ~ave us the boost we needed to win. Shortly thereafter, junior John Peschelt (2:02.6) and Ooug Dukes (2:02.9) went 1-2 in the 800 and Dan Moyer (42.4) and Seah Tupy (•3.0) took first and second in the 300 intermediate hurdles, giving New- port the lead for good. Dukes was also a double-winner, taking first in the 1,600 (4:31.7) and 3:200 (10:06.0), while Peschelt took the high jump (5-10) and placed second in the 400 (52.8). Tupy (16.0) and Moyer (16.6) were second and third, respectively, in the high hurdles, picking up the slack for the fallen Jones. •1t was lff)ly nice seeing Tupy and Moyer step up like that,• &ny· said. • Getting marks in the hurdles withoµt Jones wu a big lift for us.'' In the field eV'ents, Steve Wukawitz took first 1n the shot (42-51/4), Barry was also pleased with the efforts of_ sophomore David Sprenger, who took second in the long jump (19-03/4) and triple jumps (40-111/4), "His triple jump mark was a per- sonal best for him,• Barry said. • And, he wu way behind the board, so that's pretty encouraging. •we still have some things to work on, but I think we're improv- ing as a team,• Barry continued. •As for today, we managed to do . some positive things out there, despite the rough start.· The Sailors will continue Sea · View League competition when they host Woodbridge at 3 p.m. DIANA MUlVIHll / OAl.Y Pl.OT Newport's John Pescbelt, en route to victory ln the 1,600. . "It shouldn't have been that big a deal, because we have a dirt track at Newport. Without the rain, the dirt gets dry and it's tough to keep in great shape." Once accustomed to the elements, the Sailors (3-0, 2-0 in league) took care of business in nearly all facets of the meet. Seniors April Ross and Krista Dill dominated the competition in the field events, with Ross taking first in the long jump (15-9), triple jump (35-43/.•) and high jump (5-0) and Dill the shot put (40-61/4) and discus throw (a personal- best 133-4). That was all as far as drama goes in her races for the afternoon. She breeze4 through the 800, winning by just under six seconds (2:23.2) before anchoring the victorious 1,600 relay team (4:16.1). Also showing some extra grit was freshman Amy Burlingham. After being nipped at the wire in the 100 (12.5 to 12.7), she stormed the 200. Her 26.1 was nearly a full second better than the rest of the pack. "He had a couple of great times for us in the hurdles.• In the 3,200, junior Sonya Mechkor led for most of the race and took the top spot with a 12:12.0. Usa Gerlach's mark of 99-1 in the discus was good enough for second place and was also a near personal-best throw for the senior. •Overall, I was really pleased with our effort out there,• Tweit said. •1 think we accomplished what set out to do and we're ready lo go for next week." lbe importance of next week ii the Sailon' opponents, Woodbridge.
