Southside Towing, owned by Richard Rodriguez. WHAT IT MEANS: As part of a condition· al-use permit, t he property owner. William Huscroft Jr .• must clean up the rest of the property. The commission gave Huscroft nine months to remove any vehicles, boats, trailers or debris from the east part of the property and 24 months to sort through the con· tents of 11 outdoor con· tainers, thought to include potentially significant his· toric art if acts. Commissioner Bruce Garlich said the commis· sion decided it w ould take the Huscroft family 24 months to inspect, catego- rize and "find homes for" the artifacts. The Huscroft family has only a limited amount of time to work on the pro- ject each week and is d.eal· ing w ith two family mem· bers who are ill. The family is also wait· 109 for the City Council to decide at an unscheduled future date whether to rest ore the Huscroft House, a two-story. Garlich said. "All of the property had to be brought into confor- mance, and Mr. Ro<;lriguez's business was an innocent bystander of some of t hese other issues." But others said the high· er electricity prices will def - initely pose problems. "But it means lhat we may have to do less of something else. No question about it.• Fine added that more dggressive energy conser- vation programs probably wiU be introduced. Irvine Co. officials said they already have begun to conserve energy. While stores at Fashion Island pay their own elec- tricity bills, company offi- cials had placed motion sensors on lights in com- mon areas, among other lhmgs, said Jennifer Smith, a company spokeswoman. Te nants in the compa- ny's high-rise office build- ings will not be affected by the rate increases because the company ent~red a fixed-rate contract with an e lectricity wholesaler in 1998, Smith said . The agreement runs through 2003. Ne wport Beach officials said they could not say what future electricity bills would look like. Last year, Newport Beach's bill ran to almost $2.5 million. Richard Luehrs, the president and chief execu- live of the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Com- merce said California 's energy crisis had put con- sumers "between a rock and a hard spot. ·We eithe r increase pnces or suffer blackouts,· he said, adcling that a loss m sales and the need to keep paying employees during blackouts would probably cost businesses more than higher electricity rates. In 1998 and '99, "Corona del Mash" utilized a destructive offense to simply beat foes into submis- sion. This method, becoming increasingly more popuJar in the long-ball era, led to a CIF Southern Section Division rv btle in '99. Last spring, CdM rode a band of base-stealers to the ClF playoffs. _ This season , however, the Sea Kings have added pitching, defense and offensive intangibles to their home-run trots and head-first slides. The resuJ ts were strikingly apparent Tuesday afternoon, when the Sea Kings outexecuted visiting University to earn a crucial 6·5 Pacific Coast League Vici Ory. The win over the two-time defending PCL cham- pions allowed the Sea Kings (7 -3, 4-0 in league) to maintain sole possession of first place, heading into another first-place showdown at Costa Mesa (3-0-1 in league) Friday. It also ended a 17-game league unbeaten skein for the Trojans (5-4-1, 2-1-1), who now find themselves in the unfamiliar third-place position. But, perhaps most importantly, the victory showed this year's Sea Kings can win without the long ball or the stolen base. "That was something,• said Emme, who watched his team come from behind twice to tie, then forge ahead and hang on. It began on the mound, where sophomore left· hander Nick Rhodes, who had won all three of his previous varsity decisions, provid ed heavy doses of damage control in five quality innings. Rhodes, spotting three pitches and showing no awe of the playoff atmosphere that enveloped the CdM shortstop Keith Long runs down a liner. game, stranded nine Trojans, including the bases loaded in the first and second, before giving way to senior Cavan Cuyler. Cuyler, who made a mechanical adjustment based on a flaw Emme picked up in a Daily Pilot photo of the Sea Kings' victory Friday over Estancia, pitched two strong innings to earn his third win in four decisions. After Uni turned four singles into two runs in the first, CdM manufactured its first run. Leadoff man Dave Knech t singled, was balked to second, then advanced to third OD Keith Long's Oy to right. Knecht then motored home on Billy Eagle's groundout. The Sea Kings cashed in a leadoff error in the second to pull even, as Jason Savopolos reached oD an errant throw to first. Rory McKeever followed with a walk and both moved up on a passed ball. Savopolos then scored on K.necht's sacrifice fly to center. Steve Virgen DAILY PILOT COSTA MESA -Costa Mesa High's big week in Pacific Coast League baseball began with a huge win over visiting Lagund Beach Tuesday. The Mustangs (8-1-1. 3-0-1 in league) responded to their neax- effortless win over Northwood Fri- day, with an obvious dhpldy oi desire. Mesa overcame two Laguna Beach leads, scored three runs in the sixth and junior Nick Cdb1co earned his first save of the season, to claim a 6-4 win. HThey were upset rlnd embar- rassed with the way they played (Fri- day).• Mesa Coach Kirk Bauermeis- ter said. "The main thing was that we came out and we played hard and competed for seven innings. If our kids can do that, we're always going to be OK.· Down, 4-3. to begm the sixth. Mesa's seniors became heroes. Car- los Franco, who relieved Ryan Costelloe m the fifth, retired the side in order in the sixth. Then, with run- ners on first and second and two outs, Franco grounded an 0-2 pitch just mside third base. Cabico scored for the lead and a Laguna Beach wild throw to first brought in junior Michael McGuire. Mesa senior catcher Daniel Hunter scored senior Evan McGuire with a sacrifice fly. Evan McGuire and Cabico started the. rally, chop- ping grounders to the Artists' short- stop, who dropped each one, allow- ing Mesa runners to beat the throw to first. "I don't really preach that much about the score of the gumc and wins," Bauermeister said. "Tl's more of playing bard and competing. The main thing is that at the end of the day, you need to tee! good about your effort, You need to play hard and we did that today." Said Franco, "(Monday} was probably our best practice. That Northwood game went so bad for us, we had to go into practice and tum it up a notch." The Mustangs lifted that notch after Laguna (4-6, 1-3) built a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Mesa answered in the bottom of the inning, when junior Billy Halver• son used a third-strike passed ball to get on base and designated hitter Kevin DeSandro brought him in with his high chopper over the second baseman. With two outs, Michael McGuire grounded to the pitcher, who made a wild throw past first, scoring DeSon- dro and Cabico, who walked.
