What does drug

discovered the stretching exercise
was part of the state fitness testing
program. The students had run the
mile the week before. That, I

As the fifth-grade boys tested
their flexibility, the girls played

The occasional brave, little soul
wandered over to check on the
boys' progress, saying she could do

When it was the girls' tum to

supposed agony, although few of
them had any difficulty reaching
the mark.
Next on the fitness test were
push-ups. This time, the difficulty
was much more genuine.

Wbo floated first
tree around
Newpon Harbor?
There seems to be some
confusion as to just
who floated the first
Cbrisbnas tree 8IOU{ld New-
port Harbor.
The very first floating
Christmas tree was put on
the harbor by the original
Junior Chamber of Com-
merce -the pre-World War n chamber -the existence
of which came to a screech-
ing halt on Dec. 7, 1941.
That Junior Chamber of
Commerce had three presi-
dents: Bob Allen, myself and
Cuba Morris. The first float-
ing Chrisbnas tree occurred
during Cuba's reign. Having
come up with the idea, we
>becked with the Forestry
Department. They said we
could have a certain tree,
which had to be removed so
that a road could be
widened.
A group of us immediately
drove up into the San
Bernardino mountains to
fetch that tree. Gulpl We
hadn't planned on quite that
large a tree. We had in mind
something about twice the
size of a normal Christrnas
tree. This one would have
been quite at home among
the giant redwoods. Cutting
it down wasn't too difficult,
but getting in on our small
truck took some doing.
Fortunately, Morris, a
police officer, and Daryl
King, a fishing boat operator,
were the kind of people who
can make impossible UUngs
work. Somehow, by using
ropes and pulleys while the
rest of us looked on helpless-
ly, they got the heavy end of
the tree on our truck.
The top of the tree rested
on a dolly a vast distance
from the truck. That took
care of the length of the tree.
However, its width presented
a more serious situation. It
would simply push any
oncoming car off that narrow
mountain road.
So the rest of us climbed-
into a lead car and went
down the mountain, helpful-
ly s}Wuting "Run for the
bills I· or "The redcoats are
coming I• except for one guy
who kept repeating,
"Repent! Repel'ltl •
I think he had been drink-
ing.
We got dowo from the
mountains without pushing
any cars over any cliffs. And
we got through San
Bernardino without knocking
over any buildings, although
we had a close call making a
.right turn on the comer
where the Harris department
store had its perfume
counter.
Going through Santa Ana
Canyon -then a narrow
two-lane road -we were
not so lucky. A couple cars
went into the river, but it was
low and no one was hurt.
When we arrived home,
our next challenge was find-
ing a barge large enough to
handle our giant tree. Finally,
King found a huge barge left
from the big dredge of 1935-
36, and again he and Morris
-by use of ropes and pul-
leys -were able to erect the
Robert Gardner
ntE VERDICT
tree.
All of the members of the
Junior Chamber, about 10 of
us, rode along, singing
Christmas carols.
After World War D, a new
Junior Chamber came into
· being under the leadership
of Dean Bradford. They
repeated the floating Christ-
mas tree routine, but lacked
the •repent" guy, which took
some of the spirit out of the
occasion.

motor home mishap
A 27-year-old woman walk-

day afternoon in Corona de!
Mar when a motor home
caused a chain-reaction acci-
dent among parked vehicles,
police said.
The woman suffered minor
injuries to her legs when a
parked truck was propelled
into her and her car, knocking
her down. She was taken to
Western Medical Center in
Santa Ana, where she was
treated for lacerations. -
The accident ocrurred short-
ly after noon near the intersec-
tion of lris Avenue and East

driver of a t 978 South wind
motor home locked up his
brakes before the collision.
The driver claims he
swerved to miss a car coming
out of a parking spot. The
motor home, which was pulling
a tractor, hit the truck that
struck the woman and her car.
The large vehicle also
knocked over a palm tree and
jumped the curb. There were
no other injuries.

D AILY PILOT
With powerful political
overtones and a riveting
look at China's movement
toward communism in the
late 1940s under Mao
Zedong, •Once Upon A
Time In Shanghai• is an
interesting and sometimes
jolting story of a journalist
returning to China to bring
his fiancee back to America.
That's when dreams end
and reality begins.
At the center of the script
is a love story, as the film
tugs at your heart for Guo
Shaobai. the U.S. freelance
reporter and photographer
who always seems to wind
up in the wrong place at the
wrong time.
While Guo attempts to
stay neutral and objective
during the country's tumul-
tuous years -which includ-
ed a forced use of cunency
and physical abuse by the
soldiers if you were caught
carrying gold -hls· stun-
ning fia!lcee, Li Huirong,
has otlfer political ideas and'
the plot thickens throughout
the 104-minute picture.
A portrait of post-World
·War Il Chinese history and a
glimpse of the nation's cUs-
turbing past, the film details
the government's under-
handed financial reform.
Guo, attempting-to report
the truth to U.S . .media out-
lets about the violence and
corruption going on in Chi-
na, is stonewalled by the
U.S. Embassy and, in one
scene, is told by a µ.s. ,offi.

'Beyond the Ocean'
FILM REVIEW
Rafael Franco
DAILY PILOT
Tony Pemberton's ·Beyond the
Ocean• shows a clever use or color
and black-and-whlte film stocks to
create contrast between gritty New
York and surreal Russia, but falls short
or character development.
The film follows the life of Pitsee
(played by Darya Volga), a young
Russian woman who travels to New
PLUG IN
York to find her American lover and a
place for herself and her unborn child.
Her life is chronicled through a
series of beautifully shot flashbacks
of her childhood life in Russia, inter-
cut with her. present life in New
York. Here she meets friends and
strangers who ultimately lead her to
question her true reason for being in
America.
The film struggles to answer its
own questions through the pop phi-
losophy of Pitsee's OJ friend Dog
Walker, played . by Sage, whose
clever acting and trendy lifestyle
yearns for more screen time. It is here
that Pemberton's picture leads our
sympathy into the insightf~ words of
a OJ, instead of focusing on the
struggle of a pregnant woman who
flies halfway around the world to find
nothing but an ocean of unanswer·
able questions.
Despite its shortcomings, it still
presents a slight but sensitive portrait
of a young woman lost in a turbulent
world.

that they will be well positioned to

Get your students involved in vol-

A s a one-t:iJm! activist in

passing interest in former Mayor
Tom Edwards' recent proposal
regarding the future or John

First, I commend the Conner

believe workable solution. lf it is
tried it will call the •b1uff• of
those who proclaim that they
want to curtail the growth of
John Wayne while at the same
time they profess to want to solve
the county's di.r transportation

is not without risk.
However, I challenge the

that those who are in apparent
opposition to the former mayor's
proposal are the same people

Kudos to City Councilwoman
Norma Glover, who said at the
last council meeting that perhaps
the city should look a t the possi-

money from new d evelopments
in the future .
New developme nts such as
the Ne wport Dunes Hotel do
bring in extra d ollars for the city

would opt for a leaner budget
instead of more trafHc, more den-

Secondly, Edwards needs to
put some meat on the bones of
his proposal. His idea ror a joint

good one. However, in that

restrictive language regarding

the general plans as they affect

Lawsuits keep the

At th.e mere mention of litiga-
