Mesa City Council· man Chris Steel's comments over the past few years, I know that he is big on headlines and short on details. So it was no sur- prise to read once again that Steel would like only the rich to Live in Costa Mesa. Except that I'm fairly cer- tain that's not what he meant or meant to say. I'd µke-to tell you I kn,pw.for •sure, but be did· not return the two phone calls 1 placPd prior to my deadline. The statement I hope that Steel wanted to make was one supporting an e~d to a ny rent subsidies or any other residential support. Steel's libertarian side shows up now and then, especially when it comes to determmmg who should be walking the streets or Costa Mesa. I then pointed out that he was mistaken on all three points. Steel has been spouting Qff this three-point shot for years. Last year, about 10,000 voters m Costa Mesd agreed with hlm and voted him into office. Many more than that dld not vote for him, but that hasn't stopped him from believing that he has d mandate to trash this great city. And that is exact· ly what he has started to do. lnstedd of heeding warn- ings about how his com- ments could arrect property values pnd business reloca- tions, Steel continued tus tirade. Now, the chickens have come tiome to roost as Costa Mesa' LS tagged as a tugh-crime area. Here's the ironic part •Three weeks ago, in a span of two days, I received two e-matls from colleagues who were thinking of relo- cating to Costa Mesa. One person is renllng in New- port Beach and the other owns a home in Aliso Viejo. Both of these p~ople a re mam~d. one has a child and both are the type of residents Steel would Like to attract: Amencan-bom atizens with money to spend. Neither household 1i. likely to receive govern- ment assistance and neither 1s likely to stand in line dt the city-supported Job center. She flew back to Costa Mesa for her sister's wedding, giving her understudy the final three performances. Costa Mesa Principal Diana Carey said Howell expressed a desire to take a break from coaching, when he submitted his resignation to he r Friday morning. Carey said the decision was made e ntirely by Howell. She also said she "was not taken completely by surprise.• HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Howell, 55, said the rigors or running a program, including offseason weight training and fund-raisirtg, wore him down. "I'm not over the hill and I'm not old,• Howell said. "I'm just tired. My knee has bothered me (he had surgery after last season lo repair cartilage) and I have plantar fasciitis (heel pain) in m y right foot. But that's not an excuse." It wasn't until a NCAA softball game turned her sights to her current sport.
