T ime for a Little truth.
A Newport Beach-
based group that diS-
putes the accuracy of the
atrocities, the murders. the
dark hell that was Nazi Ger-
many has suffered its own
reversal of fortunes.
Actually, because Uus
group purports to be so inter-
ested in the naked details
and the unvarnished truth.
let me go there: The setback
was suffered by one of this
group's better-known cheer-
leaders, a man named David
Irving.
Irving is an author and
claims to be a historian, but
many -entire countries,
even -consider him to be a
man dedicated to hate.
ln a London courtroom
Tuesday, Irving lost a highly
publicized libel trial, was
ordered to pay $3.2 million in
legal costs and was dis-
missed by the Judge as being
"an anti-Semitic and racist."
The judge said Irving
•associates with right-wing
extrettlists who promote neo-
Nazism" and is dedicated lo
"misrepresent and manipu-
late" history in a long and
grinding effort to paint Adolf
Hitler in a positive light.
So what does Irving have
to do with this Little comer of
the world?
Irving is a cheerleader for
the Institute for Historical
Review, the Newport-based
revisionist group that pur-
ports to be a think tank for
scholars dedicated to exam-
ining tbe Holocaust.
They delight in studying
wartime death, gas cham-
bers, counting corpses and
offering open-ended ques-
tions designed to make Hitler
look like, well, a little less
like Hitler.
Think tank or not, the
biggest news the group
made was when it offered a
cash reward to anyone wbo
could prove the Holocaust
took place, that Jews were
gassed in Nazi death camps.
Auschwitz survivor Mel
Mermelstein, a Huntington
Beach businessman who lost
most of his family in the con-
centration camps, took them
to the mat and won a court
order stipulating that the
Holocaust was real. Very,
very real.
It was Irving who actually

Skate park

DAJLV PILOT
COSTA MESA -Loca-
tions for the ramps, rails
and hall-pipes of the city's ·
skate park will be mapped
out by early summer, the
project's lead architect said
Tues(iay. .
At its last meeting, the
City Council hired Fuller-
ton-based purkiss • rose-rsi
to design the municipal
skate park, which wiJl
cover about 8,000 to
H>,000 squa re feet. The
city budgeted $250,000 for
the project.
The firm, which has
planned skate parks in
Irvine, Laguna Niguel and
Mission Viejo, will charge
the city nearly $40,000 for
the plans.
In coming weeks, the
designers will hold public
workshops, allowing local
skaters and residents to
help design the park, archi-
tect Stephan D. Rose said.
Rose said they would
finish the blueprints abou!
nine weeks a,fter the final
public design workshop.
ln January, the City
Council chose to build the
park on a vacant lot at the
com er of Charle and
Hamilton streets. It had also
considered TeWmkle Park,
TeWinkle Middle School,
Costa Mesa High School
and Estancia High School.
A group of' residents,
including Parks Commis-
sioner Mike Schea.fer, have
opposed the Charle Street
location. They say the site,
which is in a primarily resi-
dential and commercial
neighborhood, is too far
away Crom other parks.
·we think the city may
change its mind once the
plans come back,· said
Scheafer, who founded the
grass-roots Citizens for a
Quality Skate Park. •I have
a feeling they'll figure out
it's far more expensive at
that location than in other
places in the city.·

Mother of a Class of 2000 senior says she
is happy to see her child grow up and
get away from the comforts of home
Danette Goulet
DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT BEACH -As
18-year-old C ameron Sin-
clair prepares to graduate
and leave the nest. his moth-
er is helping to push him out
to gain his wings.
"He need s to live on his
own -make his own deci-
sions,• said Robin Sinclair.
"He'll be good at it."
Came ron Sinclair is one of
the Class of 2000 students at
Newport Harbor High
School. The Newport-Mesa
community hds been watch-
ing him and others grow up
for nearly four years.
He is not certain ii he will
attend O range Codst College
or Mammoth College in the
fall. One thing he is certain
of is that he will move out
this summer.
Missing from this familiar
scene is the traditional
clinging mother who wants
to keep her child at home.
The Sinclairs laugh as they
both describe the anticipa-
tion of Cameron Sinclair's
de parture.
"They've been counting
the days for years unW I
leave,• he said.
"It's true," his mothe r
replied. "He wants my job.
He wants to run the house
and that's my job. It's time for
him to go -there's too many
cooks in the kitchen.•
Robin Sinclair describes
he r son in one word -con-
trolling.
"He wants to know e vert·
thing that's going on with
everyone -everything is his
business,· she said. "He
argues about everything. He
always has to be right and he

won't ever apologize or
admit when he's wrong. The
onJy good thing about him is
he won't hold a grudge. He's
always in a good mood -
but he's a lways right.•
Robin Sinclair's voice is
laced with amusement
throughout the seemingly
brutal descnption of her son's
character.
It seems like just yester-
day that Came ron Sinclair
was m preschool, she said. Of
he r four boys, he has always
been the biggest challenge.
·He's been a really a good
kid, but he's very obstinate,•
she said. "You can't insult
him. I'm sure someday we'll
be dose because I was the
same way growing up.•
As she predicted,
Cameron Sinclair was totally
unaffected by his mother's
critique. Like nearly every
other high school senior.
Cameron Sinclair is excited
to graduate and be out hav-
ing fun with his buddies.
With the countdown to
graduation underway,
Cameron Sinclair is spending
his free time surfing, free -
boarding (riding on a surf-
board behind a speedboat)
and jet-skiing with friends.
He has no plans to stress
himself out by deciding.
where he will attend school
next year until summertime.
His mother, who is the col-
lege and career advisor for
Ne wport Jiarbor High, is
pleased w)th his future plans
and hopes he chooses Mam-
moth.
•I think it's good fo r him,·
she said. •He's always loved
the mountains and I think it
will be good for him toe~

be on his own and be isn't

Big boats, big dreams ..
. •The Newport In-Water Boat Show, featuring
the latest in nautical technology, begins Friday.
Alex Coolman
DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT BEACH
Advice for visitors to the
l"ewport Dunes Marina any
time between today and
Sunday: bring some good
sunglasses.
-The 27th annual Newport
In-Water Boat Show is in
town and that means hun-
dreds of gleaming white
hulls will be lined up in the
water'like multimillion-dollar
solar reflectors.
The show featu res an
enormous variety ot boats,
from gargantuan luxury
yachts to sleek racing cruis-
ers to smaller vessels that
could conceivably be pur-
chased by mere mortals.
Although there will be a
large "dry" exhibition area for
boats and boating equipment,
the real appeal of the show is
that so many vessels are actu-
ally floating in the water, said
Art Henry of The Crow's Nest,
a Newport Beach yacht and
ship brokerage that has 16
boats in the show.
"You get them in the nat-
ural environment," Henry
said. •It's a key factor. This is
the best in-the-water show
on the West Coast."
Strolllng along the docks >
past the towering whitp
boats, it's. easy to see w liy
exhibitors like to display
their wares in the watet: it's
much easier for the imagina-
tion to leap aboard a floating
vessel.
A boat like the Carver
506, with its three state-
·roorns, three "heads" and
fully enclosed fly bridge
rxtight seem a little intimidat-
ing in a showroom. And the
$700,000 price tag on some
Carver boats might prove
off-putting if they weren't
bobbing happily in the bay.
But hop from the dock into
the cherrywood kitchen, run
a band along the taupe
"ultra leather" couches, and
admire the gleaming •Power
Commander• sign on the
boat's throttle, and the result
is inevitaply nautical love at
first s\ght.
Of course, it isn't easy to

For those who are truly
passionate about boating,
explained Fred Humphrey,
whose Compass Point Yachts
company· has 14 vessels in
the show, all the effort to
make a hull perf~ctly white
or a wooden railing satiny
smooth is actually a form of
relaxation.
Humphrey said. "Most of the
guys that buy these boats
like to come down and tinker
on them.•
Some of the boats on dis-

tinker-friendly than others.

On the other hand, the

CORONA DEL MAR. -When

from the Sea View League to the
Pacific Coast League for the 1999-

there'd be days like Tuesday.
He knew there'd be league
matches completed in less time
than the average wash cycle.
Matche which were over be.fore
they were scheduled to begin.
Matches where the last player
on the roster would compile statis-

for weeks to come.
Costa Mesa's Mustangs were
unwilling fodder for the aforemen-
tioned 15-3. 15-3. t 5-1 mismatch,
which included a 12-minute first
game, 11-minute second game and
an eight-minute finale. The Sea
Kings' efficency closed the curtain
at 5!59, one minute prior to the
scheduled ~tart.
•After the first game, when (the
Sea Kings) showed our guys what
they could do, we pretty much put

Coach Jon Carlew said. "That's
definitely a good team we played.•
Conti, who played all his avail-

his team's unusual depth a nd
admirable focus may have made
the decisive outcome a tad mis-

of the next 44, then immediately
began focusing on Thursday's PCL

Greg Stampley led the winners
with eight lcills, while Stanford-

had 12 assists, one kill, one stuff
block and one ace, before sitting
out the final game.

Sacramento, upon which the hoJe is
