We hear he is avail- able. For $5 million, he might be avatlable for a few days work. RON AND ANNA W1NSHIP Newport Beach Overturning Measure F not likely It has been reported lhat the El Toro Reuse Planmng Aulhority has hied an action to set aside Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Otero's decision lhat deemed Measure F unconstitutional. Because of lhe thoroughness of Otero's ruling and lhe standards of review that apply, lhis appeal appears to be nothing more lhan another stalling tactic. Otero had several different legal grounds for his decision. If the trial court is nght on any one legal ground, the Judg- ment will stand. Therefore, to succeed on appeal, the plan- ning authority will have to convince lhe appellate court that Otero was wrong on all areas of tus legal analysis. Such an outcome is tughly unlikely. Otero politely suggested that if lhe county or its citizens want to prohibit lhe El Toro project, it has lhe option of re pealing Measure A. ELMER L CO"iE Newport Beach Newport residents' opinions count Your article (*Newport to give nearly $3. 7 million to El Toro campaign," March 15) for public outreach to open the closed El Toro Marine Corps Au Station as a commercial airport stopped short of calling up officiaJs of lhe city of Trvine to see what they thought. However, you did intervtew Santa Ana Heights res1oent Ann Watt for her opinion on the spending. Watt speaks in favor of redesigrung the El Toro airport before il is used. This is a delaying tactic, rather than supporting the airport as lhe Marines built it. El Toro lS the best planned airport in tbe world due to the 14,000-acre buffer zone and fuel-saving crossed runways pointing to where airplanes need to go. All we have to do is tum on the Lights. l believe you should inter- view taxpayers of lhe city of Newport Beach, not Santa Ana He ights residents, for lheir opmion on bow we should spend our money. DON NYRE Newport Beach South needs to work with North Steve Smith's a rticle in the Daily Pilot ("Want to see lhe El Toro airport fly? Here's how.• March 10) misses on a few key points. The •attitude proble m • that be defines as Newport-Mesa trying to force lhe El Toro airport ·down the rest of lhe county's collective throats• is the mantra often repeated by the Soulh County propaganda machine headed by Meg Waters and company. Just the opposite is the case. El Toro has been here for 50 years, longer lhan most of the South Counly residents have lived It 1s the Soulh County cities that have shoved themselves down the throats of the rest of us in Orange County The county has spent $34 mtlhon to plan a commer- cial version of El Toro as required by law, and the mon- ey came from John Wayne Airport, not the taxpayers. The $5 m1lhon approved by the Board of Supervisors is , as he says, for a public informallon campcHgn ; 11 1s to counteract the $40 million of taxpayer money already spe nt by South County in their campaign of misinformation and lies about El Toro As to whether or not having dnother atrport a t El Toro makes sense. consider lhal Orange County ranks second only to Los Angeles County in population dJ1d 1s ranked thud m the generation of goods and capital equipment investment m Callforrud It 1s the econom1c engine lhat 1s dnvmg the prospenty m the county, and especially South County. The concept of d nostalgic reeling of the '50s · -the bucolic way of life and the homey atmosphere that are env1able attributes of the neighborhoods in South Coun- ty --will not be destroyed by an El Toro airport, and in fa ct may not be s ustdlllable over lhe long haul if a n adequate infrastructure , including an airport, 1s not put into place. Thts is a major population a nd industrial center that is e xpanding. It is time for Soulh County to JOm lhe rest of the world and become a willing partner with lhe rest of the county in a program of con- trolled growth that will benefit all of Orange County.
