WHAT HAPPENED:
The City
Council on
Monday gave

that would pave the way for
the rundown El Camino

rounded by single-family
homes. apartment buildings
and an office building.
WHAT IT MEANS:
Developer El camino
Partners LLC has not yet
submitted a specific plan,
and the design for the site
w ill depend on new housing

Final designs for the El

reviewed by the Planning
Commission and the City

The Mesa Del Mar
Homeowners' Assn. fervently
favors the plans, and repre-

of the project at the council
meeting, saying it will beautify
the neighborhood and make
it a safer place. Supporters
have previously submitted a

Apartment renters and

against the project and
have said they rely on the
center for food, supplies and

The city has ~n trying

City staff has been
working to try to get a

of the management and

the staff more time to work

The council in February
directed staff to trim the

LONG BEACH -2001: A
Crew Odyssey.
For the Orange Coast Col-
lege men's rowers Saturday, it
certainly had that feel as the
Pirates enjoyed a clean sweep
over ·Long, Beach State and
UCI, both four-year universi-
ties, at Martne Stadium.
w Fair conditions for all
crews made it possible for the
crews to perform to the best of
their abilities," said OCC
Coach Dave Grant.
Orange Coast won every
race by significant margins,
led by the Varsity Eights in
6:03, blowing away from UCI
(6: 13) and the host 49ers
(6:14).
OCC's Varsity Fours (6:25),
Novice 'A' Eights (6:15) and
Novice 'B' Eights (6:45) also
won heats. fn the Varsity
Fours, OCC's second shell
also placed second in the race
in 6:38, an indication or great
depth and strength in crew.
"This racing was an excel-
lent opportunity fo r Orange
Coast to prepare its crews for
very difficult racing (this)
weekend at the San rnego
Crew Classic, against Yale,
Washington, Pennsylvania,
Navy, Cal, among others,"
Grant said.
