COSTA ?v1ESA -Popular
rock band No Doubt thanked
about 1,200 loyal Orange
County fans ThW'Sday
evening with a promotional
mini-concert held on the
upper level of Triangle
Square.
The appearance coincided
with the debut of the band's
fourth album earlier this
week.
"Thank you so much for
doing this for us," lead singer
Gwen Stefani told the crowd.
•I heard you guys were out
here at 4 p.m. waiting for
tickets. You don't know what
that means to us.•
Much to the delight of
city's police and tire depart-·
ments, no serious problems
arose as a result of the well
attended event.
"It went very smoothly,·
said Costa Mesa police Sgt.
Darrell Freeman. "It was very
quiet.•
Freeman said the only
casualty was a fan who suf-
fered a minor cut and was
taken to the hospital. Other-
wise, be said, both the large
crowd and traffic around 1ii-
angle Square were under
control.
As soon as the music
cranked up at about 7:30
p.m., so did the crowd. A
human wave of fans bounced
up and down continued
throughout the 45-minute
performance.
"l speak fbr the band
when I say that we really
appreciate our fans' support,"
keyboardist Gabrial McNair
said before the concert. •It's
been rocky, but fun. It's hard
work."

•Teachers' association initiates

with safety solutions for district schools.
Danette Goulet
DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT-MESA -FqlloWUlg a rash of dan·
gerous traffic incidents in school parking lots, the
district in now forming a com.rruttee to look for
safety solutions.
Fed up with the traffic issues at schools that
put teachers and students m harm's way, Linda
Mook, president of the Newport-Mesa Federa·
tion of Teachers, brought the issue before Supt.
Robert Barbot this week. 1
•
"You shouldn't. as a parent, have to find a
secret place to drop off your child,• Mook said.
Mook described the most recent debacle at
Kaiser Primary Center, where an impatient driver
cut out of a line of traffic, over a curb and across
the front lawn of the school.
Besides the obvious extreme danger lo stu-
dents and teachers, Mook SaJd, the teachers who
try to direct traffic and safeguard the children
have become frazzled.
"Many teachers end this stressful, dangerous
assignment shaken, humiliated and in tears," she
wrote in a letter to Barbot.
Mook Aas proposed the district asserpble a
task force to address the ongoing dilemma.

A. udrey Olsen and Frank
Miashino -both members of
OCC's Repertory Theater
Company -have one thing in com-
mon. Both love the sound of an audi-
ence's laughter especially if it is
because of something they have
written, directed or said.
"It is such a thrill·to just say a
word or make a face and have the
whole audience laugh,· said 20-year-
old Olsen, a Wisconsin native who
lives in Costa Mesa.
Miashino, 23, also of Costa Mesa,
says "there is nothing more fulfilling
than someone laughing at a line or a truth. It can be communal and a
oealing process .•
( Olsen and Miashino are two of

nation for their comedy writing.
Olsen and Miashino will present
their own original plays. Olsen's play,
"Psycho Therapy," in which
Miashino is one of the actors, is
based loosely on her own life. She
says it is very rewarding to see her
characters come to life.
"We have a hysterical little 25-
minute comedy about a group of cra-
zies," said Olsen. who hopes to con-
tinue theater studies at Chapman
University next year. "It has
moments of true reality checks and
questions of sanity that aren't sup-
posed to be fwmy. It is roughly based
on my life but I am not telling what
parts.•
Miashino, who says it's fun work-
ing on Olsen's play because she has
such a goofy sense of humdr, bas co-
written, "When Justice Takes a Holi-
day,• with Costa Mesa resident Bruce
Brown. Both men are directing the
play, which has a familiar premise.
"We have a 19-character play with
15 different actors," said Miashino,
who hopes to go on to UCI or UC
Santa Barbara. •1t is about an intern
who is accused of killing a president
after she is sexually harassed. It is
definitely ripped from today's head-
lines, but it is more of a satire which
exposes the system than individuals .•
The students are very grateful to
the leadership of Rick Golson,
Miashino said.
"He is very instrumental in guard-
ing our growth by having a program
where we can do whatever we want
and not just what be likes. He lets us
explore what we like," she said.
And Golson says the staff does try
to approve the students' choices.

The bright-eyed boys and girls had
heard the stories of the Jewish peo-

a "Passover pilgrimage" was an edu·

"l t was fun,· said 3-year-old Zoe
Condon before she hurried after Can-
tor Jonathan Grant, who was dressed
as Moses.
The tot!>' journey began in the foy·
er of Temple Bat Yahm. where they
attend preschool. There, a woman sat
amid potted plants, holding her
infant. She told the children of the
Pharaoh's plan to kill ull male Jewish
babies. Since she did not want her
son Moses to die. she put him in a
basket and sent him up the river.
From there, they went to see the

children. •No water Are you hot? No

When the city was built, the
Pharaoh's sent them off to expenence
the plague.
"Thank yt>u for bwlding my city,

Then came the "dead• plastic cows,
the ice cube hail, and Magic Marker

were punishments from God for keep-

Then it was into the playground
"desert" to follow Moses.
"Forty years. they wandered
around tbe desert ... Come on, let's
wander a' bit,• Grant said as he led
the children in a winding path around
the playground equipment.
Finally, after a dramatic make-
believe parting of the Red Sea, the
children went in to celebrate with
Moses' sister, Miriam. She was played
by Lisa Cohen, the creative music and
movement speciallst, who led them in
song and dance.
The tun-filled activity was designed
to reiterate the story of Passover before
it begins Wednesday at sundown -
and to get the children excited about it,
said Karen Juncker Albert, the director
of the early childhood center at the
temple.
#It's designed to give children a
hands-on experience of Passover,• she
said. "By having them pretend, it hds
much more significance for them.•

Traffic Phasing

S"rV.~y _ /
The Newport Beach Traffte Phasing Ordinance (TPO) provided funds to help improve both jamboree
and MacArthur Boulevard in recent years. ls it working to relieve traffic in Newport Beach?
Do you know what the Newport Beach Traffic Phasing Ordinance (TPO) is?
Do you know what it covers or how it works? Do you think we should change it?
Not too many local residents are aware of the Traffic Phasing Ordinance. Yet traffic fund ing and
improvements are an important issue to every Newport Beach resident.
. ..
I
Please take a moment to read about the major goals of the Traffic Phasing Ordinance::.·· "'"' ' . Then complete and return the survey below and give YQ~~ views about the TPO to the Newport
Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce.
~ ------------------·-- - ---------
OVERALL GOAL
The overall goal of the Traffic Phasing Ordinance
is to ensure that traffic at major intersections
never exceeds 9.0 percent of.the ca acit during 1 peak traffic hours. The TPO does this by making
all projects that add one percent or more
new traffic to a major intersection pay for
improvements to reduce traffic below the 90
percent level.

IMPACT GOAL
The TPO says that if a new development increas-

intersections in the city then it mu st pay for
traffic improvements (in addition to normal
project traffic improvements) to keep those
intersections below 90 percent capacity.

KEEP OR REPEAL TPO?
The city council revised the TPO last year. During
the revisio n some people suggested the TPO be

IRVINE -For Corona del Mar boys track and
field coach Bill Sumner, Thursday's Pacific Coast
League meet with University was interesting, to
say the least.
Chaos reigned supreme, but the Sea Kings
. held on for a 68-67 win over the Trojans, sending
Sumner's blood pressure lo new heights.
"That meet was enough to give even me
more gray hairs,• Sumner satd. •t came in here
knowing my bands were full and we couldn't
afford too many mistakes.•
It's pretty ironic that it was the jumping events
that nearly leapfrogged the 1rojans past CdM (5· o. 4·0 in league). University took the top two
spots in the high jump, went 2-3 in the long jump
and swept the triple jwnp, due to no CdM par-
ticipants. .
•That's a big thorn in my Slde," Sumner said.
"It's easy to blame the kids, but m this case, the
coaches have to take the blatne for tlus one. You
work with the jumpers and your Job is to get
them on the line reedy to compete. Next week,
instead ot training the kids, I might have to train
